Planes just turned out to be the cliched story of “Person wants to be more, not satisfied with what they have. Goes through a tragic story and succeeds with some moral growth on the side.” The fact that it even stole Cars’ Style just made everyone think that it was an extension of that film from the start. And upon them realising that is wasn’t made by a completely different company it branded itself the title of “Ripoff”. Cars on the other hand was a film about making your dreams a reality, but it was a side plot to Lightning’s moral growth as a person. The entire plot is him having already achieved his dream and wanting to go further, but the entire film is sidetracked for the majority of its run time with a perfectly executed story of learning that there’s more to life than just “being the best”. The primary plot was Lightning’s growth as a person, and how that impacts his life’s goals being the secondary plot to the point that you almost forget that he’s meant to be starring in a race to begin with. Sorry for ranting a bit there, but it just infuriates me so much.

Cars was a film of racing and morals. Cars 2 was a film where Mater, one of the dumbest of all the characters in Cars, is the protagonist and becomes the greatest spy. Cars 3 is back to Lightning on the Subject of Racing, but about how times chance and that every dream must come to and end. Even if not truly the happiest one. Cars 2 is basically one of maters “tall tales” shorts like the UFO and Time Travel shorts, which work as shorts but if extended into an over an hour film just does not work at all.

Garrett, welcome to the club buddy, which includes me, you, and Schaffrillas Productions, among I'm sure others. I've had in my head for some time now the exact concept you came up with: instead of, as you said, essentially telling a story but with cars in place of humans, why not show how the REAL WORLD would be if every vehicle was sentient? How would they behave and get along with us? How would vehicles in specific professions (emergency services, construction, demolition, mining, space exploration, utility and maintenance work, deep sea exploration, national defense, cargo hauling, etc.) go about their day-to-day activities? In fact, the Canadian TV series "Mighty Machines" gives a good look at such a concept. Sure the machines don't have visible faces and can't move by themselves, but they CAN at least talk and react to the world around them, including the human beings they work with every day, and their fellow machines of course. Another good illustration is the obscure Norwegian children's TV series "Pelle Politibil", which also received 3 movies. (Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, watch the last 2 though, they are PIECES OF CRAP) This series has only 2 sentient vehicles: Pelle Politibil, the titular police car protagonist, and his friend Sally Sykebil, who is an ambulance. This one goes a little bit more into how human-vehicle relations would be, but otherwise are both good examples of the concept mentioned at the beginning of this comment.

I loved cars 1 when I was 6, but even back then I was a little concerned. Especially one time at a car store, there were some big car toys, and one of them was the King car (the blue racer) that his doors opened and a human figure in a blue nascar suit, inside the car. I wish I had a picture. We were really getting into understanding this lore, and it's hilarious. 2:11 was so creative yet true. I remember saying Carrett Williamson would be his persona. That was really fun.

i think cars is set in the distant future were all but a few humans remain, and this reasoning explains alot: 1)how are baby cars made? the two parent cars go to the "factory" (were all the humans remain) and they tell the humans to make them a child, and they make the parent cars a child (if you're wondering how they do it, here's how, they start with a human child, then they "not alive" the child, and implant the child's brain into the cars body) 2) what are the cars made out of? robotics, the human brain controls the steering and engine.

i think cars would function nearly identically if all the characters were humans and thats the problem. toy story revolves around the concept of being a toy and therefore cannot function if buzz and woody are humans. bugs life would need to be massively retooled to work with humans. cars? all of the plot elements would work if they were humans and lightning was a racecar _driver_ instead of the car itself.
