Yes, I admit that I am excited too. So are people whom I respect, like Sandy Munro, who knows a thing or two about EV design and manufacturing, as well as the disruptive benefits of such a unique design. Sandy has contributed immensely to helping Aptera cut production costs. After researching Aptera's design philosophy, their R&D efforts, and listening to several of Munro's videos, I decided to invest in Aptera and even reserved one for myself. This is where EV efficiency, driver experience and affordability meet the road. I feel Aptera will tap right into the growing pent-up demand for affordable EVs when it finally hits the market.

He helprd save the company billions and was nominated For the Henry Ford Award twice. He went on to assemble a team and formed Munro & Associates his consulting firm. In addition, Aptera owners will be impressed with what after market companies will offer.

Fully agree with the insanity of just electrifying ICE vehicles. In terms of aftermarket companies, it really depends on how well the Aptera sells. I run a small custom fabrication company, to do a full scale production run (even outsourcing to a factory) you need 1000+ units sold. I'll be prototyping some stuff mostly for personal use once I receive my aptera, but until there is a critical mass of vehicles in the wild it's very difficult to offer a product at a price an average consumer is willing to pay.

I understand the reason the EV manufacturers go there, it's easier to build up manufacturing capacity when you're selling an expensive, high margin product. It just doesn't help those who can't afford a $50,000 plus vehicle, and don't have the ability to plug into a 220V outlet at home. The Aptera could work for these people. Most people living in most apartments also don't have access to a 120V outlet, and fast charging the Aptera's 41 KWh battery at 50 kW is going to take longer than fast charging a Tesla. I calculate that it will take 35 minutes to charge the Aptera Launch Edition from 10% to 80% of battery capacity at 50 kW, whereas it takes 27 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% in the Model 3/Y Long Range with a 75 kWh battery charging at 250 kW. Hopefully Aptera will eventually support faster charging than 50 kW, but faster charging involves more cooling, which is why I suspect that Aptera decided to limit the fast charging to 50 kW.

@edvardaspuotkalis4703 Жыл бұрын
First of all it won't sell not because of two seats. It's not going to sell because there are similar cars on the market and they are on the edge of bankruptcy. The only reason they stay afloat it's because they are publicly tradeable companies. They names are Solo - Electromeccanica and FUV - Arcimoto. They are sold way cheaper than Aptera's the only available 33 thousand dollars launch edition and they can't make enough sales to make breakeven. Aptera is not publicly tradeable and you are going to lose all your money if you join the crowdfunding. This crowdfunding going non stop for the last 3 years and production constantly delays. Owners claim that Aptera going to have up to 40 miles of charging by the sun per day - so it's free energy - however there is no proofs for it. I think it's exaggerated mileage for at least twice. A year ago the claim was only up to 20 miles. I personally think the 20 miles also exaggerated number. I give it 20 kilometers or 14 miles for 12 hours on the sun. In California. Nevertheless I am hoping for wonder as three years ago I was charmed with the idea, invested and it took me all this time to realize that owners ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE IT. Don't take me wrong they probably make next year twenty of those vehicles (they call it vehicles not a car just to pinpoint that it wouldn't need car insurance and license but rather motorbike insurance and license) however the company will not sustain unless they sold their vehicles for under $10 000. Honestly $33 200.00 and price is subject to increase for recreational, holidays thing - give me a break brothers and sisters. And nobody knows how long it's going to last. What is going to break in it. By the way - they let the buyers to fix their own Apteras by releasing instructions of how to do it. The owners put it that this move is their good will and original marketing idea however I suspect the company simply don't have resources to support maintenance. I can keep going as i was trying to keep track of the firm all this time but long story short - they are not new Teslas. They are going to run out of money soon enough and close the firm. Unless one big chinese or arabic fish buys them in full which is very unlikely. Well it's only likely if they make sales large enough to proof it expandable. But my prediction they won't . Not for this price.

I suppose there are not many people left who remember how nice electric powered public transportation was with the buses, trolleys and light rail services running on overhead wires back before GM and friends bought them up and replaced them with dirty, smoky diesels or eliminated the systems altogether so ICE powered taxi cabs or personal vehicles had to be used instead. You heard the hum of the electric motors and sometimes the contacts on the power wires overhead. Cities got a lot dirtier once they electric transportation systems were eliminated. Then it became a given that you would have a black ring around your collar if you went into the city. Big business worked hard to get rid of the existing electric public mass transportation that was in place back then and worked to keep it scaled back in order to push the sales of private vehicles and increase oil and gas consumption. Longer, wider, heavier were the marching orders back then with many full sized family cars only getting 8 or fewer MPG in the city requiring them to have 20 to 32 gallon fuel tanks. Big business set us back 100 or so years when they did all this. If an EV gets 5 Miles per kWh then 120 volt 15 amp charging is quite viable. I have only charged at home with the free 120 volt charger that comes with the car for a decade now and never woke up to a car that was not fully charged in the morning however I charge when the car needs about 100 miles put back in. My current EV gets 5.1 Miles per kWh. Aptera for me would be much more than I would need since at worst I might drive 50 miles in a day however most days its 10 to 20 miles so the car would never need to be plugged in to charge it here in Sunny Florida. Joe and Jane Average in the US drive less than 30 miles per day so most people in the US would do just fine with the Aptera's solar charging only. Best!

Regarding the infeasibility of plugging a regular EV into a standard outlet - I disagree: A level 1 charger (plugging in your portable charger) can provide more than 40,000 miles of range per year for a vehicle such as a Tesla Model 3. Now, that assumes you’re charging 24hrs per day which is not realistic, however, an overnight charge (essentially half that time) can provide more than 20,000 miles per year. The average American drives about 13,000 miles per year…. That being said, I do agree that it will be even more awesome with an Aptera as that will definitely be a feasible option. We will be able to leverage electrical infrastructure to serve larger numbers of EVs if we shift our focus to smaller, lighter cars and shift to slower more abundant charging… Or buy an Aptera and plug in to the sun! Thank you for your focus on efficiency, not enough channels are focused on that. PS - glad your background music is very low, it would be even better if there’s none at all. "There's never been a two-door vehicle with cost savings this high." I'd say the first generation Honda Insight is also a good contender. Obviously not an EV or able to power itself, but I don't think either of those were feasible at the time. Also, it was available as a 5-speed manual hybrid, a unique feature which made it a lot of fun to drive. To me the Aptera is somewhat of a spiritual successor or sibling to the Insight since they both were designed with the goal of ultimate efficiency in mind.

If you charge overnight and drive less than 30 to 40 miles per day, this option should meet your typical charging needs." I don't know how it's going to work out for Aptera, but I saw two related videos that are interesting… one was from the Electric Viking (Sam Evans) about predictions from Tony Seba. People might not even own cars because of autonomous driving. What if you simply can't own your own vehicle because insurance rates are too high? 🙀 But in general, if electric batteries are truly going to win out over gas vehicles, then wouldn't that push battery innovation even further? Walmart is selling a 1080p projector for $29. Years ago, that would have been a joke on Jetsons. So, why not the same for battery tech? Why does the battery have to be the most expensive part? Although, there's another video by Cash Jordan, about how NYC is lagging with electric cars. It's mainly because charging is a problem. It reenforces the argument in this video. The Aptera seems like a strong match for NYC. But, the main problem I see with the Aptera is cost. The Aptera is not cheap, especially if you want it anytime soon. The first 2000 are part of the accelerate program. And even not factoring that, the launch edition is over $33,000. That's a lot for an autocycle.

It is an autocyle but it is a very stable design that was designed to meet all automotive safety requirements (crash testing will be performed). The two seats are a limitation but the vehicle is nearly 15' long and has 7' of room behind the seats and 32.5 cubic feet of storage. Also with a 400 mile range other EV manufacturers options are not cheap. I just went on to Tesla's website and for giggles I started an order for a 2024 Model 3 long range. The long range has a range of 333 miles. The only non standard option selection I made as the options came up was to select blue for the color. It quoted me $46,990. Tesla loses the Tax credit on the Model 3 longe range on Jan 1st. There was one similar silver one available for $41,390. I won't try and claim that it is an apples to apples comparison but at ~35k the 400 mile Aptera LE has impressive range. Weigh in a lower TCO and a bit of decoupling from having to charge on the grid over its life and the price is reasonable. Aptera base model with a 250 mile battery is ~$26k I did the same exercise for the standard Model 3 rear-wheel drive 272 mile range. No options. It quoted me $38,990.
@PhoticsTV Жыл бұрын
@@garywozniak7742 The $7500 tax credit is an interesting factor. Without the tax credit, the Model 3 doesn't seem as affordable or as fun as an Aptera. As for safety, I still don't know how to exit the vehicle quickly if the Aptera flips over. It looks a little difficult entering and exiting the vehicle under normal circumstances. I like the Aptera. There are so many things to like about the Aptera, but I live in a cold, snowy area, with lots AND LOTS of pickup trucks on the road. There are wild animals too. I am not a fan of no external mechanical door handles and I'm guessing that if on it's roof breaking the front windshield and exiting there might be the only egress. I'd keep a windshield hammer or centerpunch handy. On hitting a deer. The front end has a large crumple zone and it does have a very strong passenger cell and front airbags. They are planning to test it against the FMVSS Series 200 crash test standard. I am guess that those results will reveal positive results.

I would like to see Aptera have success just because we need to expand what the public will accept as a vehicle. I am sure during the first few years, people will just think of them as these odd jelly bean things driving around their community. As they become more common, people will be less stunned by them. Just like I think in five years, the Cybertruck will be less jarring to see. Both Cybertruck and Aptera are pushing new tech and the design language many see. Solar on EVs is the holy Grail for the segment. If there panels are reliable and durable, I believe many others will push to add this feature. I know there is a weight and cost versus benefit equation that has to make sense, but Aptera might be the ones who make that equation work. If they want to go beyond a second car or commuter car category, stretching it out a little more to put in a small backseat is needed. I could families with kids buying it if the backseat was there and easily accessible. Maybe extend the length of the door so when it opens, access to the backseat is there. I am sure once Aptera gets there first wave of vehicles out, they can figure out a four seater option. I do think their production hell will be longer than many are hoping for, but at least they are moving from vaporware to an actual product consumers can own.n

In under 7 inches of light snow or 5 inches of east coast snow I suspect Aptera will be fine. If a road has already been tracked then the clearance should be fine and ice in the tracks will be a non-issue due to the center tire. Great Breakdown Aptera is arguably the most important automotive project in the world right now, we need it to be a success, the sustainability of the planet is too priority and anything we can do do offset the cost and energy consumption to achieve it is very important.

Aptera will certainly help to lower the carbon footprint of transportation, althought far more important is the transistion to EVs and getting the grid to 100% low-carbon electricity, and both of those things are likely to happen at a faster pace than the adoption of Aptera-style cars.
@aussieideasman8498 Жыл бұрын
@@amosbatto3051 At the moment, Aptera is lowering the size of peoples' wallets. After you see the silly trikes rolling off a production line, you can see what they do to the carbon footprint. Cross bridges that are there.

Can’t wait to see this in production, or if it’ll beat Tesla’s low cost vehicle to the market
@samueltucker847311 ай бұрын
There is s limmit to how many vehicles can be charged. The heavy vehicles with massive batteries are a huge load to the grid. While a light vehicle that requires less battery just makes its own charge much of the time and uses less power when it is charged from the grid.
@samueltucker847311 ай бұрын
There is definitely a need for heavy vehicles like boats, trains and trucks. And there is also a need for light vehicles that can charge themselves and others with sunshine. Yes the gas vehicles are running off of sunshine from thousands of years ago. . . It's true there is a place for both hybrids that can power a small factory or a large house. There are a few good ones out there. The need for these things cannot be 'regulated' out of existence. No one wants their drinking water contaminated by fracking, oil spills and so on. If it cannot be done without destroying the health of yourself and others maybe you shouldn't be doing it.

Aptera is going to be a winner. A four door would cater to many more drivers too. Hydrogen, as challenged as the efficiency and economics are, will have a place somewhere in the market ultimately because charging just won’t be convenient for so many. If they can get hydrogen to their stated $1/kg goal by 2030, that would disrupt things; it’s $27-37/kg now…ha. Hard to beat stopping into a gas station for a few minutes. H2 nails that experience. Battery EV charging pricing, reliability and etiquette have lots of challenges too. Even in apartment buildings with numerous chargers. Like Aptera, I think dual fuel cars are the way to go for many drivers.

I have experienced hydrogen cars in California. They will be non starters for personal transportation although there may be a role in mass transit. ( I think it unlikely however, especially with the development of better flow batteries)

If these 4-5 ton $80,000-$180,000 EVs proliferate, in a few years, the price of grid electricity will skyrocket. In just a few years these monstrosities will be too expensive and impractical to operate. As their owners contemplate how to get rid of their unsaleable junk, every few minutes they'll look up to see an Aptera whoosh by...
@amosbatto3051 Жыл бұрын
I have no doubt that the two-seat Aptera will be a market success, but I don't think Aptera is going to truly transform the automotive industry until it releases the planned 4 seat version, because there are a lot of people who may only need two seats, but they think about all the times they need to carry extra passengers or a larger load. I think a longer Aptera with a back bench seat that can fold down would be a huge seller and will force the auto industry to start copying the Aptera. Sadly, it looks like it is going to be a slow process to get there, because venture capitalists aren't seeing the future, but eventually big money will flow into Aptera and it will be able to reach the kind of scale that Tesla is now achieving. In 10 years, I also think that the auto industry as a whole will be adopting a lot of the design aspects of the Aptera. Just like today the auto industry is moving towards large casting with aluminum alloys (i.e. gigacasting), I foresee widespread adoption of CF-SMC monocoque bodies in the future. Although carbon fiber is expensive (and energy intensive to create), CF-SMC panels can be manufactured very fast and eliminate so much complexity in auto fabrication, that I think many companies are going to adopt them, and they give EVs so much greater range due to their light weight, that I think many car designers are going to start using the material, even if they don't adapt Aptera's dolphin-like shape. I foresee a huge market for light-weight sedans and crossovers made of CF-SMC. With higher efficiency solar on the way that combines monocrystalline and perovskite in the same cell, I think that solar on vehicles is also going to take off in the future, because it makes a lot of sense with light-weight CF-SMC bodies which aren't damaged by exposure to an outdoor environment (sun, rain, salt, humidity, etc) like a standard steel body with paint. With the arrival of sensors, microprocessors, cheap memory, cellular internet and GPS, cars can now be parked outside in the sun to charge with much less fear of theft, because they can provide remote monitoring and tracking to deter car theives. What I'm not sure is whether the modularity and fixability of the Aptera will catch on, or the dolphin-shape and falcon-wing doors. I'm pretty sure that greater aerodynamics will be a trend, but I'm not sure if other automakers are going to copy the radical shape of the Aptera. However, I would like to see a new small-and-light category of car emerge that challenges the trend toward ever larger and more powerful vehicles. The trend toward gigantic SUVs, double-cab pickups and higher-riding crossovers has to stop. Not only are they extremely wasteful of resources and energy and dangerous for pedestrians, but they actually make it harder to get to net-zero emissions by 2050, which is the most important thing for the long-term survival of the human species.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but when you said that efficiency approaches 100 Watt-hours per mile, I thought that there must be a simpler way to measure efficiency! Replacing Watt and Joule with their definitions and doing a bit of math: 100 W-hr/mile =60 watt-hours/km =60 J-hours/sec/km =60 J 3600/km =220 J 1000/km =220 J/m =220 N-m/m =220 N There! A Newton seems much simpler than a Watt hour per mile, and you can even eat it if it's the right kind of Newton.

Using wH/mile has become a standard method of expressing an EV's efficiency. It is also used when calculating the equivilent miles per gallon of an EV. The EPA uses the amount of energy contained in one gallon of gasoline, 33.7kWh, and devides the kWh/mile that the EV uses into it. For the Aptera 33.7kWh ÷ 0.10kWh/mile = 337mpg-e.

In Maine right now it’s quite expensive to charge at home, 30 cents per kilowatt-hour. Makes my plug-in hybrid cost about the same to use electric as to use gasoline. This with the initial high cost, range anxiety and crappy charging infrastructure associated with electric cars, is not encouraging Mainers to go electric.

Well thought out video. I’m glad you included home ownership and how expensive it has become. Lets just say 90% of vehicles has 1 person. Being part of that 90% why should I downsize? Because it is more efficient? I don’t see that as strong enough argument. Sorry, 2 seater is too much of a compromise not it being a 3 wheeler. I agree with one of your older comments. I see this as a commuter vehicle only. Still need to own a normal 4 door vehicle. That being said? Would Randy trade in one of his Tesla’s for this? Why or why not?
