Rokon the Beast of low MPH! Climbs where only mountain goats can go...
@davidbell61013 жыл бұрын
Rokons were built in a former railroad workshop in Keene NH just down the street from where I lived. For a short period of time I worked on restoring a silk screen press in an adjacent bay in the workshop. This was 1970-71. If my memory serves me , the engine in your machine was geared down so low was to make sure there was adequate power when the vehicle was loaded and operating in high altitude back country. I also have a vague memory of them working on a motocross or an enduro bike with an automatic transmission. I remember very little about that bike except that it was very fast and did some impressive wheelies down the length of Railroad Street.

I love how "Magic Box" is now an accepted term for "90 degree gearbox". I use the term too now :)
@1one3_Racing3 жыл бұрын
On the farm a magic box was always a rotation converter. A 90 degree gearbox was always just called a gearbox. We only ever used rotation converters rarely like on multi blade offset slashers where they needed to turn in opposite directions for balance. Even most of them just used 90 degree boxes on different configurations to get the correct rotation.
@lilredwagon53113 жыл бұрын
@@1one3_Racing am actually curious here. What is a multi blade offset slasher? Is it a tractor attachment? What is its purpose? Never heard of such a thing but then again I'm just an extremely small time hobby farmer just growing for my own family haha!
@1one3_Racing3 жыл бұрын
@@lilredwagon5311 yes, to behind a tractor. You have a standard slasher which is just a giant blade running off the pto through a 90 degree gearbox. An offset slasher doesn't pull behind the tractor but pulls alongside it so you dont run over what you're cutting. Depending on what you're cutting and how big your tractor is a single blade may not be enough. Our 200hp tractor used to pull a 3 blade slasher (which looks like like a ride on lawnmower deck bit bigger) and since all three blades were on the left side of the input shaft we ran 2 blades counter clockwise and 1 anti clockwise so it pulled alongside but didn't shake itself to bits.
@donaldhalls21892 жыл бұрын
Magic box from what I've found out reverses direction of input clockwise output anticlockwise on the same drive line? All the best interesting to me

I had a KLR that had a diesel 18 HP Generator engine put in it and it would do 55 mph using a CV transmission. (A David Sarks build) When I bought it I couldn't get it over 40 mph. But after bending up a lot better intake and exhaust tubes for it, it breathed a lot better. I made it so it would breath through the KLRs Air FIlter and exhaust out the KLR Muffler. It was even street legal. I rode it to work several times for about 3 years ..... I sold it to a friend in Ohio. I believe he's still riding it. It was a hoot to ride but smoked badly at top speed WFO. Wanting to build another one, one of these days and use a real transmission with a clutch. Plan is to use a 3 cylinder Turbo Diesel Already have the engine & 6 speed transmission. You guys are a hoot!

Your Rokon originally was a 2-stroke model designed for a top speed of 20 MPH, New 4 stroke is 35 mph, they were never designed for speed, their aim is 60-degree incline from a standing start, climbing up and over obstacles is where its at for Rokon. I believe the magic number is maximum 8 hp, the limit of the drivetrain. Always fun to tinker.

Grew up with these. Dad would take us on 3 to 5 day trips with these. Have 5 of them. Down to 3 running currently. Hooked up a speedometer to one, top speed was about 25mph stock 3rd gear. Just stay away from mud with small rocks in it, it will pop the chains off and you'll spend the rest of your day getting them to dry dirt depending how far you drove in a dry lake bed.

The original engine was a 2 stroke manufactured by Chrysler/Dodge if i remember correctly, a 2 stroke could run consistant up very steep inclines, sideways or upside down. swapping out for a Briggs is dodgy at best, The last of water cooled japan 2 strokes with a quiet exhaust are likely the best choice for this application. or a properly geared crf 250-300cc thumper would work quite well too. i rode a Rokon 2wd trail blazer for first time in 1962 or 63, amazing how far you could go on a tank & both tires full of petrol which made for great traction too.

Before today I'd never heard of this bike. Well at least not that I can remember. But YT threw a couple of links in the sidebar that looked interesting, including one from Jay Leno. So I've been watching some of these and it was interesting. The Rokon you've got seems to be a quite early model. I base that on the lack of any kind of suspension while the more modern versions has suspension on the front wheel. The large wheels are also an older thing as they since switched to slightly smaller wheels with less storage space in the hubs. Yes, that's a thing... Finally the two speed gearbox has been replaced with a three speed version. Early models had a two stroke engine that revved a lot higher than the four stroke Brigs you used, which is why the gearing was a bit off. Well it was all of that, and the fact that it was said in the first video that this had been abandoned for twenty years or so... It would be interesting if you could find someone who has a newer model that you could have a look at and compare ride quality and capabilities. Even the latest tops out around something like 30 or 35 MPH so it would probably not be all that much faster around the track than the one you've got. It would still be interesting to see how much of a difference the changes has made. Putting it on a scale would also be interesting.
