I was told by a military mechanic that those 4 cylinder engines can go to 100 horses with the right modifications. You can put one of the 4 cylinders in that blue mini car, might do 60. I'm going to try stuffing a 2 barrel carb on mine.

Quick tip. If you have a slight dirty carb and you can get the engine to run momentarily. Get it to revv up as much as possible and put your hand tightly infront of the intake of the carb. From the high pressure of choking out the carb at high revv it will sometimes suck any debris through any passage that may be clogged
@randallyoung6647Сағат бұрын
I've cleared many carbs like that .but I've had a couple that made the carb not run but cleaned it out and it worked again 😂.

Boy do those generators bring back memories. I was in Army Engineers for 20 years and we used the generators for our floodlight sets to light up the worksites. They were used a lot to light up the administration tents. Oh yeah those generators would set out in the weather 24/7 so don’t be surprised if you find rusted parts.

I use a push rod with a spark plug boot to start spark plugs. An old mechanic showed me that over 40 years ago and it hangs over my workbench. Because of the flex of the Boot it threads right the first time.
@musicauthority6743 сағат бұрын
3/8 bolts works better. and you can get them in different lengths. and screw the threaded end into the boot. and the head of the bolt gives you something to grab onto. and Autolite spark plug boots work the best. and if you have more than one of them put the different length bolts in them. and throw them in your toolbox.

@rivercowboy another trick I learned and works really well on motorcycles....after a build when you are dialing the carb and timing in ...and you get it to the point of test riding it ...place short vacuum hoses that fit snuggly over the mixture and idle screws .. really great for dialing while out riding it.
@rivercowboyСағат бұрын
@@eriklarson9137 My 40 plus years ago sockets have rubber keepers in them too. But when the older more seasoned mechanic showed me this, I quit trying to start plugs with a socket and used his method. Experience speaks. It just starts easier. I get what you're saying but please don't troll a guy because he shares an old school method that works in a pinch. Even Ike has paid ohmage to old guys that taught him that if you have a screwdriver, fingernail file (don't tell my wife), and a matchbook, you can clean and set points without expensive tools.

Awesome! Next project idea, take one of those engines and build a custom frame and make it like the old Jeeps, or heck even get a real Willy Jeep! Either way, you can use that engine with an old 3-4 speed transmission, high and low range, transfer-case for 4x4, and locking diffs possibly. I love yalls projects but it would be really cool if yall made a very reliable, small, 4x4 vehicle like the old Willys Army Jeeps. (Like golf-cart size reliable utility 4x4 vehicle)!

I was working on Chevy Blazers and C10's when I was in even though the latest and best was the new Humvee. I noticed that we got equipment that was passed down from more important roles. If these engines survived whatever conflict they were used in they were most likely rebuilt and redistributed across the smaller/less important military bases.

You guys asked for suggestions. I like the Isaac's idea of doing a 2 cylinder Mini bike but I would say do it like a chopper style and for a force cylinder I'd like to see one fully hopped up like Isaac said with some sort of forced induction added like pvt. pile but with more power and Maybe build a rear engine rail to go with your front engine rail at the drug strip and put the engine in that
@musicauthority6742 сағат бұрын
At minimum You could mix and match parts to get most of them running. and even end up with several generators. and you have to remember a lot of small engine manufacturers? come up with their HP ratings by carburetor size .even if the engine can run with much bigger carburetors. and most of them are detuned to make them last longer. so you definitely have room to experiment.

There was a whole family of military engines, the 4AO32 4 cylinder, the 2AO16 twin, and the 1AO8(?) single that all used the same cylinder heads, same cylinders, same pistons, same rods, etc. Saturn Surplus still sells parts, I believe. I have a 4 cylinder one dated 1967 and driving huge 24VDC generator.

Guys I ran those in Korea in 76 to 78, and Germany 80 to 83. For an idea look up a Popular Mechanics from 1951. They have a cool race car with a Motorcycle motor that looks like a Midget sprint car. For engines like that it's standard operating protocol to break them in and in the process test the engine to be certain it's going to work properly and reliably. I suspect that's what happened to your "new" engine so it may actually be new/tested. It's also SOP to steal parts off one to make another work again. Not the best plan but it happens.
