You must be fairly new at videoing trains. The sound you heard at about the 5:38 mark was just the slack adjusting as the train moves into and out of the shallow gully they was visible during the early part of your video. Probably due to throttle adjustments. That was a very mild sound of adjustment. Sometimes it makes a very loud bang.
@4kTrainVideos13 күн бұрын
Yeah, fairly new indeed. I appreciate the input! 🚂😎 Thanks 🍻
@lawrencemahalak682421 күн бұрын
It’s a sticking spitter valve. They’re used to help maintain main reservoir air pressure. Also help in blowing out excess moisture from the airl system. Sometimes they get a little dirty and sputter like that. No big deal.
@4kTrainVideos21 күн бұрын
Oh gotcha, thanks for the great information I really appreciate it! 🚂😎👍
@billmorris261313 күн бұрын
The spitter valves have nothing to do with maintaining the pressure in the main reservoir. That is controlled by the compressor governor that kicks the compressor on an off as needed to maintain a set pressure. Usually around 140 lbs. The spitter valve is only there to eliminate the moisture as it builds up in the main reservoir.

that noise is the pressure relief valve that keeps various air pressure systems (there is more than one) at intended pressure (they can probably handle 2x pressure but are often rated at 1.5x). each little pop is the relief valve opening up and letting a little blast of air out. then it closes once the pressure gets low enough and the compressor resumes pressurizing the line. rinse, lather, repeat ... as fast as you hear those little pops. a lot of those clunky sounds you hear are different cars dragging differently on the couplers because not all the brakes are acting the same (react to brake air pressure a little different).
@4kTrainVideos25 күн бұрын
Oh wow, thank you Phil for the very in depth explanation I really appreciate it! 👍🚂😎
@billmorris261313 күн бұрын
@@philhoward4466 Sorry, but you actually have no idea of what you are talking about. Sounds like typical rail fan info. That repeated spitting sound is a stuck spitter valve. It has nothing to do with maintaining pressure. It’s only purpose is to drain condensation moisture (water) out of the main reservoir. There is only one air system on each modern locomotive. One compressor, several, usually 2 to 4, main reservoir tanks that are all interconnected, commonly call the main reservoir. Every thing that uses air gets its air from the main reservoir. The governor maintains the pressure by cutting the compressor in and out. If the main reservoir pressure gets too high there is a pressure relief valve that opens to release excess pressure. It is not the spitter valve. The other banging sound you hear is the slack adjusting between the cars in the couplings. It may just be due the throttle changes and or the gully that is visible in the beginning of the video around 30 or so cars behind the engine. My educated guess is that the engineer is not using the air brakes at all. If I was running that train the automatic brake valve would be in release. The only thing you are some what correct about is that all the brakes do not set up at the same time once a reduction on the train line is made. Even when placed in emergency it travels at 800 feet per second. So if the brake handle was placed in emergency from the lead locomotive on an 8,000 foot train it would take around 10 seconds for the rear car’s brakes to start setting up. But each brake shoe should provide the same braking pressure on each wheel as long as the car’s brake valve, the brake shoe and the linkage are within serviceable limits. Which they should be as they should all be inspected before the train leaves its initial terminal. And any cars added to the train after it leaves its initial terminal should be inspected by a Carman or the ground crew of the train.
@kingjames82837 күн бұрын
That is an over-pressure blow-off valve which keeps tanks, valves, and air lines from being over-pressurized and exploding. On semi-trucks, the air drier system normally spits off at 125-psi, but if for some reason that system fails, then the tanks are equipped with 150-psi over-pressure blow-off valves to prevent the tanks and air systems from exploding. Not sure what the values of the air drier and over-pressure valves are for a locomotive but I'd have to assume they are much higher than on a semi-truck. It is perfectly safe to operate in this condition but what it does do is make the air compressor work that much harder which results in much higher temperatures which is not good on the compressor or the air system and can cause early failure of components down the road. Air compressors on semi-trucks are water cooled to help keep temperatures down, I do not know if locomotive compressors are done this way or not.

I might offer up the possibility that if the engine was shut down overnight, that might be because of some ice buildup in the air reservoir causing the splitter to sputter! Also you were standing way too close to the train, as if it jumped at the crossing, you would not be able to get out of the way of the train cars. It may look slow, but you also have the potential for the cars to topple. A lot of foamers stand too close!
