I know the diesel engines are great but I have a 1.6 petrol fsi Octavia (07 reg) which has done 244000 miles now, doesn't burn oil, passed it's recent MOT with no problems, is still quiet and smooth drive and accelerates well when overtaking and also returns up to 60MPG on a good run. Skodas really are great reliable cars

I always enjoy hearing about such vehicles. The longest I've kept a car is about 10 years. Usually I want a change long before that. I can always come up with a good reason. I may have to keep my current 2 vehicles for the long run this time though, as I can no longer afford to chop and change. Prices here are mad now. ( uk)

Mine is currently on 127k miles its 2004 one of the first mk2 octavia's and thr only bother I've had in thr last 9 years of ownership is the sills had rotten at the rear but they got welded up and its still ploughing on she is a bit tired now with surface rust etc but she's going in for a respray as it had a full service history and I've even the delivery recipets etc from when it was new absolutely love this car but we also have a 2011 1.6 tdi superb currently on 320k miles and its still ploughing on also a few suspension bushes are worn but other than that its fine. I remember when skoda's where something to be laughed at but that's all fairly changed now the 2 skodas are the best cars I've had to date.

It's not just the miles on the car but the age, parts wear just parked too, especially rust. taxi cars are also contantly running so engine always warm and the are services way more than a regular car. taxi car miles are a lot easier on the car than regular driving. It's still very impressive though! I wish to get many more trouble free miles on my car, almost at 200,000

If, for arguments sake, we said that the average motorist replaces their car when it hits 200k on the odometer, adding again for arguments sake a cost of around €10k + trade in for a replacement (used) we're still looking at about €40k and over four cars (+ maintenance on them) saved. Those repairs you mentioned wouldn't come close to that. The figures I have could be wrong, but I'd say the answer is still the same - it would be massively cheaper to maintain a reliable car over 900k kilometres than replace it every 200k, on average.
