Very good unbiased review of both these filters. I like using the Royal Purple because I can order on Amazon at a decent price and have it delivered to my door in two days. Amsoil I'd have to drive ten miles out of my way to a dealer who is really annoying and always trying to sell me other shit along with it.

I agree. How hard/easy it is to purchase a filter is certainly a factor. Cheers.

The bypass valve is not only for when the filter is clogged while it is able to function as such the main purpose is when you are accelerating the valve opens and allows oil through otherwise the oil pressure would be too low after the filter and oil would not be able to flow fast enough or get to the parts it needs to lubricate.

Thank you. That's a solid point as well.

@@opera93 wonder how that went I changed my dads truck to royal purple and we ran a k and n a wix air filter we did the exact same out of town trip and actually got really good mpg improvement unfortunately the truck doesn't have a mpg reader or anything but we didn't spend $200 on gas we used around $120 it was impressive to say the least and this was hauling a Nissan 300zx back home

$17-19 dollars. RP and Amsoil. Go with the Fram ultra synthetic. Under $10.00 at Walmart. For the few extra bucks you can get two Fram ultra synthetic filters.

As far as micron ratings, are the manufacturers in any way required to make good on them? In other words, are these numbers legit, or are they something manufacturers can just throw out there? In this case, is it possible that Amsoil is just throwing out a better number on the exact same filter (as Royal Purple) in order to justify asking $2 more?

Used RP filter and Liqui-Moly 0w20 oil last change.decided to change oil around 4500 miles and 45% on oil life indicator. The oil is thick black and very think. Thicker than the original 0w20 thickness. I never had this issue before. Never had black colored oil after 4500 miles. I wonder if the filter is not doing a good job filtering. I'm using Idemitsu oil with the RP filter. Ran about 700 miles so far and the oil color is already getting dark. I'm not sure if RR is a good filter after all.

Very Nice Review! Great explanation of the bypass and drainback valves. Does the Wix XP not have a bypass valve? That and slightly less filter micron size is the only difference I see between it and these 2. I have always used Amsoil Ea filters but I am on a fixed income now and think I will stay with the Wix XPs I have been using .

I like Wix xp as well. And yes, Wix has a bypass valve.

Looks like both amsoil/royal purple are made from the same co.I have always used royal purple oil for the last 15 yrs.I`ve never used neither of the oil filters from royal purple nor amsoil.The royal purple must be a good filter.If their comparing it to amsoil.

You have no idea what you talking about. Amsoil don’t make their own oil filters. Amsoil and Royal Purple oil filters are by Champion labs.

Hey Cars n Toys... Love all the videos, very informative. I have a 97 Maxima that I run Mobil 1 Extended performance with a Mobil 1 filter. How long do you go before oil changes since we share the same vehicle? They say both can go up to 15 K but I change oil around 7-8K each time. Thanks for the insight.
@aza04a2 жыл бұрын
I’ve gone 0 to 200k+ in a couple vehicles with that combo doing 10k changes, now I do 7-8k, shorter intervals than that if it’s direct injection or turbo.

You think changing your motor oil every 6,000 miles is wasting money, should we go 8,000 miles on a Royal Purple Oil filter and Royal Purple Motor oil? what you think?
@CarsNToys8 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the vehicle. For example, newer vehicles can go longer between oil changes. Following the owners manual is a very good guide to go by.

Further on the microns?! He already explained how small that is in this video. You want him to pull out a microscope and a lab coat and see them?! You want him to show you a math equation that proves 20 microns is less than 25 microns? Besides 5 microns is probably within the sampling error of whatever back-alley study the moneybags at Amsoil used to justify charging 2 dollars more on these otherwise identical products. That means they're really the same! Go back to school and turn your brain on!
@NeverBeDaunted8 жыл бұрын
I think you might have misconstrued Nelson's request for more details about microns. Does a lower micron combined with more filtering square inches help or impeded the filtration/flow. Is double the surface area always best and if so, then why don't they specify that on the box? There are a dozen questions that Nelson might have held when asking this question. It's a valid one. And I think your response is rather rude.
@MrArcticShadow8 жыл бұрын
Well, then it's up to him to elaborate what he meant. What the heck does "further on the microns" supposed to mean? Any half intelligent person seriously trying to understand a topic would ask a question that shows a certain level of awareness, context, and effort in phrasing their questions to make it easier for anyone with expertise on the topic to answer. This guy on the other hand shows no effort in trying to construct a question that specifies which parts of the topic they are having a hard time understanding, a blatant disregard for any amount of time the content creator spent in researching the topic already, and a clear laziness reminiscent of someone that skips class and then has the audacity to ask a fellow student if they can copy the homework solutions. Sure my comment may be rude but, unlike you, I don't look at a poorly phrased comment on KZbin, with three punctuation marks at the end of sentences, and presume it was written by an intelligent being deserving of the same level of respect and consideration that I would give to a colleague at work--and my response to Nelson reflects that.

What many videos do not show is how Motorcraft Filters are one of only few companies using a thread end bypass, Wix, Napa, and Royal Purple all had outstanding design and when they got bought out, the designs changed and in my opinion they are a cheap design. No longer made with highest quality. Royal Purple Filters, Napa Gold and Wix have all changed from a nice steel base plate with thread end bypass, Silicone ADBV, evenly spaced holes and steel coil spring, solid canister casing. It would be interesting comparison how they have changed. Now Purolator is better than those. I currently use Motorcraft although I know they use a leaf spring and the Purolator is a decent design, the Boss is nice and it shows filter media is better than Motorcraft. Not a fan of dome end bypass. Many new oil filters displayed in videos don't even come close to what RP and Napa Wix used to be years ago. The new ACDelco E core is an embarrassment. Why do these companies think they can change a proven design and still have a loyal following for a cheaper product. They must think customers don't notice. I expected K and N to be higher quality, the dome end bypass design is cheap and does not look built with durability.

Give up that $12.00 crappy draft beer you buy at a sports event and put the money towards a real filter. Royal Purple.

So idea for a follow-up video. From what I remember on the box for my RP filter, it says made under license from Champion. For my 01' Passat the Champion COS8994 fits and based on pictures looks nearly the same, but costs roughly $5 less than the RP. Is it possible they're identical kinda like the RP and Amsoil but without the fancy powder coat? Would be really interested to see! Otherwise love your work and you've been very informative informal and useful in my gear head journey 🙂

The Royal Purple Oil Filters are wildly over-priced !! The Bosch Premium has a better (20 Micron) rating, similar features, and costs about half of the RP's high price.

great vid in i just put a wix in my wifes 09 vibe and was wondering do you think it would be ok to use an oil extractor pull the oil out refill and just keep the filter in and change it at the next oil change? will be using full syn thanks

Thank you. I wouldn't. You'll be able to pull the oil but any contaminants will remain inside the filter media.
