So does it recharge the battery if not plugged in?

Yes it can! There's an E-Save mode to the left of the steering wheel that saves the battery and just runs the gas engine while charging. It's a slow trickle charge though so it's best to plug in, even if you're just using a level 1 wall charger

I am purchasing one of these next week having it delivered. What do you recommend on mode when traveling far distances like an hour or so?
