You are not safe ANYWHERE in South Africa. That's a fact. If you're not even safe in your home or a church, where do you think you will be safe? And yes, we lived through an armed robbery in our home, outside of Stellenbosch. Held at ransom by 5 masked criminals with guns to our heads. So we can speak from experience. It's everywhere in South Africa. It's worse in Gauteng. But because people don't expect it in Stellenbosch, it makes the news.

Criminals walked into my daughters flat in Andringa Street and stole her laptop. She was not at home but her flatmates were. We could see the location of the laptop but the police said they can’t do anything. We have the CCTV footage clearly showing faces. The police asked us (3 months later) if we want to close the case. We said no. Haven’t heard anything from the police since.

This is nothing new. I went to Stellies from 2010 to 2014, and even then, students used to get robbed coming back from clubs or the study center. Student houses used to be broken into all the time. You would come back from your lecture and find that your room has been broken into. Female students had to be accompanied at night by USBD from the library or student center to their koshuis or even shuttles that went off campus. None of this is new. At least now it's getting some light

I'm so irritated with the high level of crime in this country. We can't even enjoy the beauty of South Africa because of crime. South Africa is even more beautiful in the night time. I would love late night walks and drives, especially during the summertime but the lack of proper policing means that'll never be a reality ever.

Stellenbosch police station is shocking. I suppose its not Stellenbosch specific (SAPS in general) but they are extremely rude and arrogant in my opinion and I think they are not very fond of students or the culture in Stellenbosch, thus they do not feel very obligated to assist you properly. I only had to go there to report a car accident but I would not like to have to be there for more serious incidents, my confidence in them is not very high.

There is no more "normal society" out there. Ordinary people living ordinary lives have now become the target and what is gained by the perpetrators - a cellphone, some money that may last a day, nothing else but the victim is traumatized for months because you never know how these incidents will pan out.
