Dudes. I think this is a video of Carter Beauford telling a bunch of absurdly cool stories the world has never heard before. Or I'm dead and this is an imaginary afterlife experience. Probably the latter.
For the uninitiated (lol amirite), Carter is the co-founder and drummer of Dave Matthews Band. Since he is so much better at drums than Michael Jordan was at basketball, scientists are still breeding livestock with unicorns and Zapdos the Pokémon to try and come up with any semblance of terminology beyond "GOAT" that could begin to describe how important this dude's work is to the history of music itself, but their experiments are futile. For now, it can only be heard, nay, felt in the many many legend'ry recordings Carter has gifted us over the numerous and gnarly decades of his career. Dig hither and take to heart Carter's sublime reflections on his life as an artist and student of the drums.
Also: Thank you. I feel like sometimes my channel gets to be a barbershop in the village of Carter fandom, and I feel so grateful to every music fan who comes here and makes it so. Whether this is your first or millionth time here, the existence of this video was your doing. Holy heckin' thank you.
I hope I get the chance to tell the world one day how gracious an organization Dave Matthews Band is. To Jim, Greg, Ian, Coran, Jeff, Jerry, Ann, Rodrigo, Stefan, Poli, Liz, Rene, Tim, Tucker, Buddy, Eric, Erik, Fenton, Bill, Nick, Anthony, Henry, Dave, and Carter: thank you each for the music you bring to the world every night on the road, and thanks for somehow accommodating the making of this video in the midst of that.
Speaking of that merry gang of legends, you can vote once every day 'till January 10 for DMB's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame right here, and I will personally accept 100% of the credit if they win: www.google.com/search?q=Rock+...
One last thanks, and it's a maximum thanks, to TJ Martinez, who flew all over the continent with me this year in pursuit of the gnarly footages. No one in the world is better at converting my unmitigated "here's the shot I want" babble into vision dudely executed. Dig him anywhere you can type the handle ThatSkinnyTJKid.
Right, so, who wants to win some insane Carter Beauford memorabilia from over the years? Rules:
1.) 5 commenters on this video will win a mystery piece. Some are magazines from the 90's, some are promotional photos/ads, and some are knick knacks from the stage. Some are signed by Carter Dudeford, some are not. All are awesome. For eligibility, subscribe to this here channel and include the tag #dude in your comment on this video.
2.) If you want the sweet gnarly banner you see in the outro, tell us your aspirations on the drums and include the tag #gnarlybanner. Carter and I don't care whether you're aspiring to rock stardom or you're just trying to get a song together for your after school talent show. Just tell us what you're aspiring to so we can send you the gnarly banner for inspirado.
3.) If you want the original Under the Table and Drumming VHS box set y'see in this video, tell us what you'd name the sequel and include the tag #drumtomorrow.
4.) For the first time in dude history, there will also be 3 winners over on Instagram. Follow @harrymiree and include the tag #dude in your comment on today's [January 2] post for eligibility. (Ooh, one lucky 'grammer gets a big gnarly banner too.)
5.) Twitter gets a winner as well! Follow @harrymiree and include #dude in your comment on the one post you find there.
6.) All winners get picked and notified January 27, 2020.

This entire conversation was generously translated in subtitle form to Portuguese by Diego Mancini and Felipe Menhem. Vai Brasil my dudes.
Thanks for watching. Extra thanks to my PatreoDudes who get an extra 5 minutes of unreleased footage from this interview over at / harrymiree

Loved the vid. So cool Carter was talking about the guys that inspired me early on too. Watching Buddy Rich on Johnny Carson as a kid, banging on moms pots and pans to seeing George Duke and Return to Forever live in NJ, blow me away in the 70’s. He didn’t mention Mr. Cobham tho...?

He brought his vhs 📼 copy of under the table and drumming!!!!!😂😂🔥 I’ve watched that video many times as well wishing I could get my hihat syncopation to sound 1/10th as good as the man himself. Ran into Carter on the road a couple of weeks ago; immediately recognized him in a lobby as he was walking out. I thought I’d missed my chance to say hi, then 3 minutes later he was walking back towards me I said “ Hey Cater Man!” He wheels around, almost taken aback that a fan recognized him. He was so gracious and warm and gave me a few minutes to talk about shows I’d been to and how I’d started listening when i was drumming at like 12 years old. Easily my favorite and most iconic musician and I’m so thankful for the chance to visit with him and that he was so generous with a fan.

Yes, is surreal hearing Carter talking about other people with such reverence... If one didn't know who he is or what he had achieved, one would think he is a random drummer of the bunch, from an unknown band. The guy is always smiling and it comes naturally to him. Is a joy just to watch him talking or drumming because of his personality.

This is EPIC. I was a bouncer at the New Daisy Theater in Memphis when Under The Table broke out. Back when they were doing 2 sets. I stood next to the stage and if a bomb had gone off in the audience I wouldnt have heard it. I was in a trance and immersed in greatness of this new band and Carter who I still swear has 3 arms because no human could connect with an instrument like that (RIP Neil Peart) that I'd ever witnessed live before. Got some signed swag later and he was such a down to Earth cat. Loved it. Been a proud fanboy ever since. Great interview man. Just made my day.

This must have been a Dream come True to interview Carter. I have played Drums and Percussion for about 40 years and I have decided at almost 50 I want to make a run at becoming one of The Greats. I wake up by 4 every morning to get my lessons and practice in. I have to get up that early because I have to care for my Uncle who is a really good guy that has lived his life with epilepsy. Also a couple of years ago my Mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's and I was able to buy the house next door so I am able to look after them because she honestly is the Sweetest person I have ever known. I play multiple instruments but my Absolute Passion is Drumming and I try to pass that Love onto my Drum and Percussion Students. I really did enjoy this video and if I may suggest a title for the sequel; STEP TWO: BECOMING A SAMURAI DRUMMER... #DUDE #GNARLYBANNER #DRUMTOMORROW

Most people that don't like Dave are the people who have never seen a show or taken the time to listen. My first show was in Antioch '01 when I was 17. I thought that Dave was a goofball and the only reason I went was bc I wanted to go on a road trip with my friends. The atmosphere at the show was electric, the people were cool, and the air smelled really good. I've been to 50 shows since then and have even took my kids to their first show at Blossom last year. It's ok to not like a band. But when it's a band with genuine talent and humble band members, it's hard to understand why.

Carter is obviously a phenomenal drummer and both Leroi and his replacement are awesome saxophonists, dave is my all time favorite guitarist(I can play almost all of his songs) he's not the most technically advanced, but I love his style so much. #gnarlybanner - I saw DMB play Folsom field back in the 00’s. That night Carters nephew/cousin in law was my room mate went backstage and was able to get the drum sticks that carter played with. Carter signed them and wrote to the room mates see you next time. They are now framed above my Guitars. Carter is also my sons favorite drummer. Each day we aspire to practice and be our best selves not only with our music but how we approach the world and interact with others. Carter not only gives the same Vibe but reminds us that with a dream anything is possible. I want that gnarly item to go next to the sticks to keep telling the story of true inspiration can come from anywhere and from anyone. Carter is by far the best drummer ever. I am blessed to get to listen to it and see his bubble gum blowing smile and laughter on stage in a world field with so much hate. Cheers to you cats And Thanks for sharing the video.

#gnarlybanner This interview/video was so awesome and down to earth, just as I always would believe Carter the type of person to be! I would always see this banner at our local music store hanging on the wall and Carter’s huge contagious smile would always light up my heart knowing that a good guy is being a great leader in music! Carter has been such a huge influence for me and my playing. I have always loved how his spirit sang in the songs that he played on the drums, never the same thing and just the right feel for the moment. This is what I have always aspired do when I played…and to share a moment in time with a listener and hopefully leave a smile with them, just as Carter has always done for me. I thank you Carter for infecting me early in life with the desire to share music and understand that it can and should be something fun and beautiful! Thanks Harry for this great interview and sharing your passion of drumming and music!! All the best friends and I wish you all the best in 2020…happy drumming to all!!

I've been drumming for 20 years and I've always deeply admired Carter Beauford even though DMB isn't necessarily the type of music I prefer. This is the first interview of Carter I've seen and my admiration for him has grown even more. What a cool guy. I also love Harry and am glad he got to meet Carter and make this video.

Thank you Harry. Carter is the ultimate. Really happy for you to have this experience. You earned it dude. Now for my aspirations on the drums since it would mean the world to me to have such a #gnarlybanner ... I am left handed and was taught to play closed handed by a very closed minded (albeit phenomenal drummer) instructor. I too was lucky to be gifted Carter’s UTTADrumming as a teen and have been open hand since. My aspiration for the drums is to nail down three Carter tunes in You Never Know, #41, Captain from Chicago Caravan (where Carter creams the fill to lift the band out of a bit of a funk, well except Timmy who was slaying it from the start). Why learn these songs in particular? Well... my father and mother have been my biggest fans since I was just a child (kind enough that they even let me have the drum set let alone gifting my first set to me and the lessons and the UTTADrumming and not to mention allowing that I play day or night). Incredible parents really. And to top it off, I got into Carter/DMB thru my dad and mom whom bought the album after seeing them open for Big Head Todd early 90s. (I was born in 89, I’m 30 yrs old.) I feared adding this but my parents both each had illness in the last several years and tho they are doing fairly super well now, #dude thanks for asking, it’s been my mission of late to learn those most challenging licks for them and share it with them in the next year. So I’ll play that #drumtomorrow and every day after as well. Well, I’m sure you can appreciate the story regardless of any super sweet Carter memorabilia. Love you dude and here’s to Carter making another drum instructional. Health and happiness, Ryan

2020 is about to be amazing if it starts of w a video of you meeting Carter Beauford... I mean #dude what an amazing surprise. I love your videos so much and I have always been a fan of Mr. Beauford (I feel like I'm not worthy of just saying Carter) but your videos really opened my eyes to his playing style and you both have completely changed the way I try and play now. I started a band this past year and you've taught me a lot and watching Mr. Beauford has taught me so much and I just want to make ppl happy with my music!! Keep up the damn good work dude and keep livin the dream! p.s. that #gnarlybanner would look pretty cool 👀👀👀

Aspirations: After a brief gig years ago drumming in a rock band in Nashville while going to grad school, I now aspire, as a father of three in his mid thirties, to show my kids the joy I get when behind the drum kit and hopefully one day be able to return to playing out live. #gnarlybanner
