I pulled several muscles while editing this. Anyway, Rick and Morty is still one of Adult Swim's most popular and beloved shows. However, in recent years the quality of the storytelling and jokes has faltered dramatically. Here's how Rick and Morty tragically declined.

The hatred for serialization really upsets me. Because they're the perfect show to be semi serialized. You could have your self-contained adventure of the week that isn't related to any of the other adventures. But have the effects of that adventure continue on to future episodes. And reveal small bits about the characters past in each adventure.
@cursedimageseveryday5559
@cursedimageseveryday5559 2 жыл бұрын
To be honest I actually think this so called hatred for serialization is an actuall part of the story not just a gag that writters keeps telling us so we don't demand serious plot. Rick somehow knows he is in a show.

He did say “he hates backstories” in a literary sense but that turned out to hide a tragic backstory so maybe him not wanting serialization could his detached literary-speak for “I don’t want to develop because I feel I am impossible to develop positively?”

Honestly if there should be a rick and morty rewritten and where I would change is after s2 and if I was the creator I would demand for theme to go full serialization if I knew what would happend and the show dilcene after s2 and just tell theme to suck it up

And in my s3 rewritten the frist thing I would do is to erase Rick's memories of everything up to this point to get rid of meta hummer and make rick forget that he's in the show and would have made the government alot more threatening than in s3 and 4

They were great when they came out. It was the wackiness of an adult swim show without getting uncomfortable. It was also exciting to see because I had been a fan of Roiland for a few years. I think the “you need to be smart to understand Rick and Morty” crap happened in season 3, when Roiland stopped a lot of his involvement anyway, and the writers seemed to lean into that.

Yes. R&M has become so pretentious. After watching Community last year, I feel as though Harmon has tendency to start a show with a great idea and great humor, from a relatable standpoint that breaks through to how the viewer thinks, but then if the show gets successful after a couple seasons he starts believing HE is smarter than the audience and seems to have a disdain for them. I just start getting the feeling watching both shows that the writers think they are better than me and incredibly narcissistic

TL;DR Let's be honest - This show was designated for a stoned audience. The reason it was so good was that no one in their *clear mind* sought to figure it out. It started as a show to watch while high, not for it's depth or meta-complexity, but for the colorful mind-numbing dream-like experience with some sophisticated poop jokes and an anti-hero character. No one - not even the writers - wanted this show to become serious. But alas, flat out comedy alone does not make a show great. The scarce moments, the sad and insightful, where you could actually see some depth inside the madness - they were what made this show so profound. But depth meant plot and plot required people to get it, but stoned people were not there to get it, but the show's popularity just exploded like a nuclear bomb and new audiences means more success. But how could they appeal to both stoned and clear-minded people? I remember how after season 2 there was a HUGE wave of speculations about what's next, due to how the season ended. The expectations were at peak. I think the writers understood that and felt the great pressure. It's like they knew they had to come up with a delivery of the ages, but it was simply impossible(and still is) to satisfy all of the audiences. The only way found a way to kind-of doing it was to... write something so flat and dumb that it appears to be actually deep and then double down on it as if it was just you(yes, you!) who were too dumb to get it?! In the next few episodes of season 3, they took every messure possible to compile all of the fan-based speculations and theories and conciously contradicted them inside the story, so that ONLY THEY will be ones who bring out the mindblowing twists, ONLY THEY will be the ones to tell the audience where the "actual story" goes. Sure - it was indeed a legendary delivery that no one could predict(I wonder why) - But what it meant was that they had to double down on their own audiences, they had to make everyone look stupid and them look smarter, like they're on another level. But there was also another huge problem - mindblowing twists only work if the show comes to a conclusion of some sort or takes an extreme turn into a completely new environment, otherwise the show might fall into inconsistency if not carefully constructed and synchronized with the older episodes. The combination of an inconsistent world and a show that has to double down on its own audiences again and again just to stay alive, shows how dead it is. Yet again, the writers never wanted it to become so serious, so maybe it had to die in order to become good again?

This is considered boring by usual Rick and Morty standards. Half of him wants to be a kid and half of him wants to be an adult so he fights himself. This is funny because.................I have no idea. I also dislike the dreary tone and how all the characters are angsty all the time. I also think it's just gore=funny.

The Thing that Rick and Morty is missing is more of Justin Royland. Of course he still making the voices but the visual jokes, and his random scence of humor mix with the more organized and self refferencial work of Dan Harmond was the thing that made the first seasons pure Gold. Now it feels like he Just go to the studio, do the voices and then leaves to keep working on "Solar Opposites" or other projects. Dan Harmon is a great writer but Rick and Morty Identity came from Justin Royland Randomnes and Dan Harmon ability to take those random ideas and turn them in an entertaining episode.

Back then, when I had only heard and seen small bits of this show, I thought it was a nihilistic, edgy adult animation, but when I learn that it was pretty deep and pretty good, I was interested in why. Later on, when random Rick & Morty memes (Obviously the cancerous "Pickle Rick" one especially) spammed the internet, I tried to distance myself from that, cause I noticed that comedy (at least made by the new generation here on the internet) was starting to get ridiculous and nonsensical. I saw many people talk about "Oh! This message about nihilism and the system is SO deep" and such, thinking it was a good show, but now I see that it's just fallen into what I once thought on surface-level to be: A show that's pushed it's message so hard that not even the show itself can make sense or comprehend what it's doing or what "thing" it's trying to do or even organize itself properly. It's all so random and ridiculous.

It is different now, but I don't think season 6 has been bad at all. Season 5 was legitimately bad. Not just "bad for a good show", but actually bad except for maybe the first episode, which wasn't incredible, but decent. A lot of people think South Park waned and then came back, but I think it's dropped significantly in quality as time has gone on. It's just not Simpsons lumbering abomination level bad. I wanted to turn most of the episodes from season 5 off the first time I watched them, didn't rewatch any of them until season 6 thinking I might have misjudged, went back and wanted to vomit trying to watch them again. Season 6 I've already rewatched a couple of episodes because I legitimately enjoyed them that much.

there's a better universe somewhere were rick and morty got cancelled after 2 seasons, and like 5-7 years down the line after constant fan pressure, we get a one-off movie-length special that resolves the season 2 cliffhanger and wraps up the character development shown over the first 2 seasons instead of reversing it.

I think the issues with shows in general is they have a time limit so to speak. Rick and Morty had a very wild style of writing that felt very different when it’s first season dropped. After the years and the constant analyzing you pick up on the writing style. It’s not that the writing has gotten worse so to speak, but writing patterns within the confines of the shows universe become easier to spot. A bat shit situation isn’t surprising when you expect bat shit. At a certain point it’s time to put down the pen and let things come to a close. Which might be coming considering they have started showing a back story which they said they would never do. Great works are typically shorter, things like Cowboy Bebop and Breaking Bad come to mind in that regard. Thinking about it, South Park my be the only satirical show that is the outlier. However IMO that’s mainly due to how quick they can produce an episode and be in current events. What animated show has completed an episode from creation to air in roughly 6 days besides them? Anyways my point is animation is hard, and they accomplished a lot with the show. I hope they bring closure with a final season and end on a high note. Things can be around too long, look at the Simpsons and Family Guy.

I don't know how writers still haven't picked up the difference between reference humor and just references. One is a joke in and of itself that ALSO references something. The other is JUST a reference. Saying "I'm like inspector gadget" isn't a joke, you have to have seen inspector gadget to even understand the line. "Go go sanchez ski shoes" is a reference to the same thing, but even if you've never seen inspector gadget before, the concept can still be funny. I feel like this is super common knowledge by now, but writers just keep doing it. I guess because all the mouthbreather fans will cheer for the reference even if it isn't funny.

Rick and Morty was too good, too fast and was given an unbearable amount of expectations to live up too. It grew self conscious, self serious and self loathing. I miss the Rick and Morty that were fleshed out in season one. Rick, being smart but not too bright, trying to connect with his grandson, but tripping over himself. It left lots of room for fun scenarios, character development, and actual risk. I hate how the character arcs all just end in "they're a stoic badass" by the end of the episode. And he used to be one of the few characters in the show that actually stood up to Rick despite his concerns being drowned out by deaf ears. @King Henry V Daria's cynicism wasn't meant to be aspirational. Everyone around her was a counterpoint to her sarcasm and lack of social skills. In fact, her cynicism was regularly cited as a negative quality. At the same time she was smart, empathetic and grew through the series to appreciate those around her as she matured. In other words, she was a teen, and Jane in particular was the softer edge that made the dynamic, and by extension the show, work. Her hating everything wasn't talking down to people for liking those things because she wasn't seen as "better" for not liking the same. That's why even the "bad" characters like the Fashion Club had their positive points sometimes. R&M is the opposite of that. There isn't really any growth, because the more the family is exposed to Rick and his world, the more jaded and condescending they become. They adjust to a universe where they are only out for themselves. Summer might be the best example of that mentality. And it is presented as a good thing in a way because that makes them smarter and more capable, with the ability to live on as each new reality falls without consequence to the core family. It is Daria if Daria's cynical assholishness was celebrated. Only ironically, in a way that pointed to the viewer and sneered.

@@FalseHoodx aren't young teenagers the biggest fans of such topics? Adult shows expand in many different directions since boobs and sperm on the screen aren't embarrassing for a "relatively mature" person. I guess, for "adults", it's much more shocking to see a show that honestly portrays issues of toxic dynamics of people unable to maintain relationships, substance abuse, awkward sex and dysfunctional families; to see our secrets and failures applied on other characters presented from cruelly direct perspective. It's nothing anyone is proud of and everyone keeps it to themselves. People know about reproductive organs since young age - everyone learns at different pace but it doesn't take 18 years for teenager to know about bodily fluids. This kind of humour on TV has shocking value to teenagers since they haven't seen anything like that on Bob the Builder. It takes special talent to write such jokes that work and have some substance behind them. Being disgusted by sperm episode, doesn't mean that a person is too innocent; it's just a preference. Especially, if they sat to watch R&M, not Family Guy. Spermgate is not about creators crossing the line and being too graphic. People are just disappointed in them for loosing touch with the show and see their attempt in primitive absurdity as a failure.

A big problem with me is that some of the jokes fall flat because the show creators are pretty pedantic and political but not in a funny way. For example, this is their own public opinions btw, they think it's funny how Jerry becomes good at survival because he is homeless, and for them survival in the wilderness is the same as being homeless .... no they weren't joking. Did someone found the feminist jokes in the horse sperm episode funny ? Because I didn't. I pretty much never saw someone dismissing a women's opinion just because they are women. And it's so dumb when some of the most powerful figures in history have been women. Then, in the last episode of seaon five, the creators went on a rant in the credits about how the whole episode was a critique of capitalism and how all the system needs to be left behind ( luckily the episode kind of works without the dumb analogy because the analogy fails completely ). The fun thing is, nothing is stopping anyone from leaving capitalism behind. Anyone can found a city through voluntary work and have a public ownership of the means of production. No one does it because it always fails.

I think that letting the smith family get use to ricks crazy life was part of the down fall also. It was great how the family didnt know how to handle alien invasions and they used what they had to defend themselves from ricks madness. Now they're just used to it. It's to the point where they are fully aware of ricks modifications on the house, they know how to operate his ship, and they're not phased whenever an alien enters the house. I personally liked watching the family not know how to use ricks inventions and cause problems for themselves.

Once they threw in their required 1 plot sustaining episode a season, they never mentioned any consequences or chances that happened. Something I noticed when watching Season 5 is that the characters reference and mention previous episodes and moments in the series way more than usual, if done at all, so that the show's world gives off the impression that those moments did indeed happen, instead of feeling like Family Guy does where each episode just happens and its world doesn't evolve from that episode, making it more self-contained. The problem in doing is that it clashes the two methods of episodic creation used in Rick & Morty where an episode is either a solo episode dedicated to being "funny goofy Rick & Morty adventure" or "this episode is one of many that when combined will create a serialized story so that our show actually has a plot". In short, Rick & Morty suffers from the TV equivalent of Ludonarrative Dissonance in video games.

One thing I remember very distinctly, when season 3 was being shown off, was that people shat on the new writers for the issues with it. It was toxic, shitty, and a lot petty, but we got a lot of important info out of it. Namely, that most of the material in the show is created in the writer's room collaboratively. This is something that's been emphasized again and again. What I think happened was that, in the jump from season 2 to 3, the perspective of (and size of) the writing room had shifted. It wasn't a small group of writers tossing fun ideas to each other with different perspectives and ideas, it became a larger room filled with people who, while they still all had their own interpretations, now had to prove it to that many more people. I don't think this in of itself is an issue, it can lead to more varied dynamics and situations. What does make it an issue though, is if there's a power imbalance in that. If a showrunner + writer has a small group of writing partners they collab with, there's not much shame in shutting down bad ideas. If a showrunner + writer has a full room of writers, suddenly it becomes harder to tell them no. Regardless of how good a writer is, having that one perspective dominate the discussion can create all sorts of issues, especially in a show like Rick and Morty. And I think we do have evidence to support this. Dan Harmon has gone on plenty of times about his opinions on storytelling, and his preferences towards extreme nihilist comedy over character writing. Do some people enjoy that style of writing? Absolutely, but it's a very hard sell when so much of the show needs a balance, at least as it's been established. (Also, while I do cite Dan Harmon specifically for this, there's a chance many of the other writers very much believe the same, and it's not a power balance issue, but the remaining fault still remains) With that interpretation also comes a slew of new questions, namely "why do some episodes still focus on the character moments, while others mock it." (also, from here on I'm speculating on top of speculations, please take it with a grain of salt the size of Texas) I think that the remaining character moments in Rick and Morty are done by specific writers, trying to bargain their ideas into the show. Whether that be because Dan's vision dominates it, or many of the writer's share the same vision, I think that specific writer or writers want to sneak their own character moments into the show with the concession of "wouldn't it be funny if..." My reasoning for this is that Ricklantis Mixup is in season 3. "Wouldn't it be funny if... a whole episode was dedicated to an artful exploration of a new society of Rick and Morty's, and we had no jokes the entire time." The episode is so unprecedented that I cannot believe for a second it was created unironically. I think that one of the writers' had a genuine passion for the world, presented it, and justified it's existence by its irony. "Wouldn't it be funny if... we made an episode that was genuinely beautiful as standalone art. and then showed that it didn't matter." Every time a character says something of value, or does something of value, I always put it into this context. "Oh, the two Beths both exist and did something in this episode? Imagine how lame it would be if we followed this up unclimactically. That'd definitely show it didn't matter." "What if we teased a resurrected bird person, but we took away all the dramatic stakes from it just to make it less satisfying, gotta make sure it doesn't actually matter in the long term." "What if we changed the entire dynamic of the show, then reverted it super unsatisfyingly, to show it didn't matter?" "Oh, a world where Rick can't use his typical science gadgets? He adapts immediately and becomes a badass science sorcerer, but only if it's the least satisfying way we can do it. Also add horny dragons." (I think the horny dragons were unintentionally unfunny, but I think the rest of the episode's issues were intentional) It sounds almost conspiratorial, I know, but stick with me on this one. The train episode proves this for me. While the episode itself is rather solid, and the comedy is pretty good, the implications of the ending bits are massive. Rick and Morty get zapped for all their "story potential," and the only way they can stop it is by running it into the ground by being obnoxious. They zoom out and Rick makes an over-merchandising joke while being creepy even by his standards. Given that this whole episode was a retry of a "corrupted Hero's Journey" (see The Vindicators), this episode was probably under more scrutiny than any other episode, and thus, is a better reflection of the show's direction as a whole. Yet, the only takeaway there is, for the entire episode, rounds off to "wouldn't it be funny if... nothing mattered?" The train scene by itself was enough to prove this, but the zoom out and weird Rick behavior serves *only* to confirm this. The intentional takeaway of the episode is exactly that nothing matters. The intentional takeaway of the show is that nothing matters. And while it's in the context of humor, it's more like one big anti-joke. It's not a joke, it's a statement. "Wouldn't it be funny if nothing mattered."

@@nyahnyahson523 weird thing the whole, wouldn't it be funny if nothing matters, is something I can get behind, Rick and Morty already isn't standard television in that it comes and goes like dead beat dad, so when it comes back I have a few laughs then promptly forget about it, this worked to its favor back in seasons 1 and 2 but come the end of 2 it got popular and I genuinely think the writers do hate that fact given how every time they do something world changing they undermine it the next episode or even the end of the season, I think the main issue with reviewers is both annoyance with fans overhyping the show as better than it is but also feeling like the writers view all their fans as the same annoying people that want things to change, everyone, everyone brings up how much they hate the baby episode and love the rick backstory episode and to me I just saw the baby episode as the writers blowing off some steam, not every episode needs to be a banger not every episode needs to move the story along, people see the whole facist Morty as a substitute for the fans when I just see it as a way to make fun of constraints when making a product people hounding you to things you'd rather do on your own terms Rick and Morty honestly should have stayed niche, it should have never gained more people in the writers room and while people say change is necessary I don't think its out of fear of woke as much as it is something being unrecognizable as it once was

Ryan Ridley and Kaufman were literally the only two competent regular writers on the show, and they stopped after the second season. The whirly dirly conspiracy *feels* like it's a season 2 episode trying to break itself out of the trash, it was so close, and that just so happened to be the last time Ridley was a writer.

You know, an aspect I used to love about Rick and Morty was that Jerry was a dick, but one you could understand. Everyone always wants to be a Rick, maybe even a Beth or even a Morty. But the vast majority of people would be like Jerry, and that's not SUPPOSED to be a bad thing. When it comes down to it, Jerry generally does have the best interests at heart for his family. His worst moments is when he actually gets recognized and his ego balloons out of control as a result of having too much sips of the fine wine Rick gets drunk off of on an average basis. Rick is not supposed to be replicable, and I felt like that message was that Jerry was a believable response to being an in-law to one of the most insane scientists in the universe. But now he's just kind of a one-note joke. He's inherently pathetic to everything around him, yet nobody can see why having someone who wishes to return to normalcy is inherently a bad thing. He's tacked on as a punching bag who wants to be Rick, when atleast before he used to be a mortal being who had to cope with who's effectively a super-smart demon.

Most people are not like Jerry. Most people are not morons, but are just confused or depressed and insecure. If anything, most people are like Beth and Morty, and well, also like Rick minus the supposed scientific genius. Because Rick is an "idiot" too.

I definitely did enjoy when Rick would be outmatched and then desperately start yelling "Run Morty! You have to run!" The point SHOULD be that Rick is a piece of shit and the show should prove that constantly by showing him lose due to him being a piece of shit. The Cronenberg episode was the best example of that. It did that in the earlier seasons. But, that is lacking in the later seasons.
