Selecting fallen timber is very eco but made it hard work for you but also meant you didn't have to wait for it to dry and oil. No cracking problems. Well done! Personally, I prefer carving 'green', easier on the hands!
@d.l.barlow87244 жыл бұрын
The wood stays quite green while still in tree. Since I cut this piece from a fallen tree I assure you it was still quite wet. These days I mainly stick with carving cherry and sometimes I get to the logs I've cut while they're green 😅, but honestly cherry carved very nicely mostly dry as well!

Food grade linseed oil
@d.l.barlow87244 жыл бұрын
Hi, this is Dustin the guy who carved the spoon 😊. I recommend raw linseed oil (aka flax oil) or 100% pure tung oil. The former smells less but does not last very long, whereas the latter has a somewhat pungent smell but will last much longer as it dries hard similar to the way boiled linseed oil dries. Personally I use the tung oil.

Quick question do u have to heat it up for strength and no cracks or is it fine like that
@d.l.barlow87244 жыл бұрын
Hello, this is Dustin, the guy who did the carving in the video 👋. There is no need to heat it up, just leave it to dry in a window or something. Because you are getting rid of so much wood the chances of cracking due to drying are very slim. If you find cracks usually that is a result of an errant axe blow.

What hapens when the green wood dry up?
@teegotime5 жыл бұрын
Generally you need to dry them slowly to avoid warping and cracking. Depends on your climate but I've heard people going as far as putting the spoons in a Ziploc that's open with a paper towel inside and storing them in the closet for a day or two. Then, once dry, doing the finishing cuts to smooth out the surface and bowl. I've seen several methods of spoon carving (and have my own), it's really fun to see how others do it, and try their techniques out to see if it fits you or increases your efficiency.

The former smells less but does not last very long, whereas the latter has a somewhat pungent smell but will last much longer as it dries hard similar to the way boiled linseed oil dries. The issues with linseed oil are really only with BOILED linseed oil which has chemicals added to it which can be harmful to health.

Just looked through the website and instagram. Really nice work Dustin but you are seriously under pricing your product.
@Jerseyhighlander5 жыл бұрын
@Greenwood Forest Craft I can appreciate the sentiment if nothing else but... I'd suggest that "affordable for anyone" is Walmart (I gagged a bit when I typed that word) or Ikea, not handmade, one of a kind. You could probably sell the raw piece of wood for more than you are getting for something you labor over. The cost of the wood, the tools to do it, the wearing out and replacement of the tools, sharpening stones, chainsaws, gas for the chainsaws, the space it takes up in your house...you could rent out that room for storage and make more. I'd guess you're making about $0.50/hour. Cut your finger really bad and see if the ER Doctor will work for you for that little. Then add in the fact that you are severely undercutting everyone else who is trying to make a living doing this. Don't construe any of this to be nasty or insulting. I've just seen a lot of good people, with good intentions but no clue how to price their work, go down in flames.
