One Hatchet, One Spoon - Hatchet Only Spoon Carving

Kusk Bushcraft

Күн бұрын

In this video I share a simple spoon design that can be achieved with a regular knife. I decided to use my hatchet to carve the entire spoon to test my skills a bit, which was a fun little challenge.
I have carved many spoons in the past using this design. It's an effective way to carve a spoon without the use of a gouge or spoon knife.
Hatchet used - Marbles 700DB
I wouldn't recommend carving this elaborately with a hatchet unless you are very comfortable handling blades. Some of the shots in this video make it look like my carving techniques could be dangerous, but I assure you I was being safe and cautious with my carving.
Thanks to all who watch. More videos coming soon.

It is easy to see why carving, especially birch wood, is so loved by our people and is such a long standing tradition.

I love it! Looks like it would be perfectly functional. I love to carve spoons, and have always wondered how I could carve out the bowl without a hook knife if I had too. The geometric cuts are the solution! Thanks.

I don't know about this new hatchet. With your old one, it looked like you were shaving off strips like a hot knife in butter, but with this new one, it looks like you're having to hack pretty good. Are you using a different wood?

Green wood would have been easier to carve. I have a bunch of dead, dry birch that I use for my carvings. No sense in harvesting a live tree when I have all this good dead wood to use. Thanks for watching, happy trails!

Using a knife would have made the job a bit easier . A ax is for rough work , big jobs . The knife is for finishing and detail . Work smarter not harder . "Deeds not words " yes I can and do carve . You did a good job and have skills keep it going .
