Carving an eagle and giving leather tooling and coloring tips.

Because of a timely coincidence I have a video about carving an eagle just in time for the fourth of July. In the last video I made a leather cover for a water bottle and had enough footage of the tooling that I decided to edit this second video about how I did the carving.

It was a special edition that was only available for a month or two. Tandy used to have a tracing pattern for it on their leather craft library. All I can find now is the sketch it was traced from. tandyleather.com/blogs/leathercraft-library/eagle-sketch

Carving starts with a swivel knife. Then various leather stamps are used to add texture and the illusion of depth.

how thick the leather needs to be to carve that?

I was working in 6 ounce leather. I could probably carve it in 4 ounce but I would have to be very careful not to go too deep with some of the tools.
