I drove a bunch of the 1st gen prius when I was a cab driver in PHX, AZ. I saw varying conditions because every day I got a different car. You could really tell when they had new batteries by the amount of time the gas engine stayed running at a stoplight. Toyota actually sent scientists in actual lab coats because running the cars 24/7 in the desert is a great torture test for vehicles.

Chris Fixx bought a Prius for $2000. The battery was dead so he replaced it himself for $1000. The car was in perfect condition cosmetically, inside and out. Obviously it had been garaged. If you live a an area prone to power outages, here a tip no one knows. During the Summer, you can sit in your Prius and turn your A/C on. In 8 hours, the Prius used 1.4 gallons of gas. During the Winter, a Prius will keep you warm for the same reason. No other car can do this so it's really popular for the mobile homeless/nomads.

Its stunningly good technology from Panasonic. There is a nice app / ODBII solution - DR Prius - that will give a good estimate of the battery packs remaining life and health.
@kellingtonlink9564 жыл бұрын
The problem with re-built battery packs is the fact that they will only replace the bad ‘cells’. The problem with that is that there could be 10’s to 100’s of cells that are at 40-85% capacity left that will go unchanged/untested. A battery is only as strong (like a chain) as it’s weakest cells (links). So don’t go expecting this re-built battery to last anything like an original... not even close. Thanks for the video. Have a Merry Christmas, Wizard Family.

In the other time my mother-in-law uses it in the city. Now has over 160.000km on the clock, or 100.000 miles. Except a shot ac condenser, one drained 12V battery and a cracked windscreen: no issues. 4.8l/100km average fuel consumption.

My 2008 Prius bought new it’s going strong has been the most economical car I’ve ever owned. I only use it for long trips and use my bike for short trips. I’ll wait until I get a tail wind for a long trip and get better mileage. Have 130 K on it. The hybrid battery is fine and the car is garage kept in great shape. On the highway I hit a skunk by the wheel well luckily it did not get lodged in the radiator area. I counted five seconds And the smell start coming into the cabin. The car behind me probably got a Cloud of odorant Through his heater system then he passed me as soon as possible.

In 2016, I bought a 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid as a Toyota Certified used car. I love how it's so quiet in stop-and-go traffic or when I-5 in Portlandia or Seattle/Tacoma turns into a parking lot. It's very soothing to just crawl along on electric power. Also, imagine a big car getting 44 MPG on the interstate! The only downside is that you can't go more than 30 MPH on electric power alone for more than a half-mile, and you have to feather the accelerator pedal or else the gas engine will kick in. Otherwise, it's an awesome car. Having rented several hybrids over the last decade as well (Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, Toyota Prius), I love hybrids. Bonus: hybrids are sneaky-fast off the line at a stop light because of the torque of the electric motors.

I recently bought a 2010 Camry Hybrid for these exact reasons. It now has 189k miles, original hybrid battery, and the late 2.4 engine that burns oil. It was becoming long in the tooth for the previous owners who were getting ready to replace it, and I was interested in finding something inexpensive to use for rideshare work. I wanted something that got better gas mileage than my 2017 Subaru Legacy with the 3.6 engine, and at the same time, 2020 put all of my work in the performing arts completely on hold, so I didn't need an extremely reliable car to get me to work or auditions. I cashed in on the Subaru over the summer, and the Camry is almost cutting my fuel expenses in half. Also considering the amount of inner-city driving I do now, I will probably replace the Camry with a newer Camry/Avalon/Lexus ES Hybrid when this one is done.

Depends on the hybrid. I have a Lexus rx400H, and it's not worth getting rid of, the truck just rides to good with 200k miles. I'll spend 4k on a new battery when the time comes because it's worth it all day. It would cost a fortune to upgrade to a better car lol. Run good oil and maintenance, and u should get 500k miles with slight repairs here and there. The gas milage makes it worth it all day. And my Lexus is just as fast as the new dodge trucks and range rovers with the V8...if you charge the battery up. And that's fun to do because it gives you a break gear on the shifter...it feels like you are down shifting and it saves you break pads. Btw, the coolest thing I've done in my rx400 is drive it through a flood. Like 4ft tall water. The street was flooded and all you could see is mailbox tops to tell you where the street was. And it was about 60ft of flood to drive through....and I actually made it....and that's insane because it's electric...my mind was blown.. Lexus apparently makes submarines lol the water literly went half way up my window while I was going through it. And a guy with a charger didn't make it...he lost his car behind me, and had to swim out of his window. I will drive this truck till the wheels fall off. I just replaced my battery pack in my 06 Prius with 245k miles. During its downtime I did it’s first set of front brake pads. It uses some oil (more than I think is ok). $1500for replacement batteries is easily paid off over the next few years bearing it doesn’t have any major repairs And is significantly cheaper than a new car. I told myself my goal is 300k miles. If something happens I know I can at least sell the battery for some money. It is a remarkably good car. I only have a car like this. Maintaining it since I bought it in 2016, this year it cost really much with a new transmission, clutch, starter, front&rear shocks, thermostat, O2 sensor and rear muffler. That was about 3 times the price I paid for it. And that's not the end to it, since in January it'll need its 2-year-safety-inspection, and I'm driving with an airbag light since a year, which needs to be adressed (that clock spring also contains the steering angle sensor, so it's another 160 bucks just for the part, plus installation). Actually, in the years in between, from mid-2017 on until the end of 2019, it was really good and needed not much besides an oil change and its regular safety inspection, which it passed with flying colors. So why am I doing this, keeping this old car running? Well, for one simple reason: I can't afford anything newer/better. Not only because I just barely have the money to keep this one going, but also because this one was explicitly chosen to be cheap to fix, so all the spare parts are still wildly available and usually, they are really cheap - like front brakes, rotors&pads for 80 bucks, or the transmission with a clutch a few weeks ago, 900 bucks instead of thousands. Plus, I really don't like spending money that I don't have yet, so I would have to save thousands of bucks before I could actually look into buying something else, and then it would also be a cheap used car again, and therefore I wouldn't know what's already been done to it, and what is yet to come, so I'm just safer keeping this old clunker running as long as possible. Heck, my mechanic even already promised me if the engine blows, a used engine can be obtained for about 300 bucks, so I wouldn't possibly even touch a grand with the installation, and it'll be good enough again. And that's what I'm going for: good enough. Nothing fancy, nothing shiny, nothing that makes people think what a cool dude I am (if they need to look at my car to decide about this, they're not the people I want to deal with anyways). Just something that's cheap to drive, and this is it.
