Work on the police version of this all the time. The hemi tick turns into a small chirp which is a lifter getting stuck and the end result is a camshaft being eaten. Seen this at as low as 44,000 miles. Extended idling will cause this due to not enough oil flow to the cam. The one in the video has not had this due to it not idling long periods of time. The recycled E-class chassis (LH) was one of the few good things to come out of the DaimlerChrysler merger. The trans is an NAG 1 (Neu Automatik Getrieb) 5-speed... pretty reliable. This major restyle (LD) version of the platform included an upgrade to rack and pinion steering... the earlier models had sloppy feeling recirc ball from MB. The early LD vintage looks much better than the earlier years too, while the most recent have an overdone, look-at-me apperance (IMHO). The HEMI tic gets ample attention on KZbin. Some think it is an early warning of cam lobe wear from inadequate lube flow to the cam and lifter valley... some think it is an early warning of dreaded dropped valve seat failure. Both camps think cylinder deactivation in more recent model years increases the likelyhood either expensive failure. At nearly 200K, that Charger looks damn good.

The entire platform is a retired Mercedes platform. In 2011 Chrysler updated the control arms with biggerstrut arms and ball joints. When you inspect the drive shaft flex joint look for cracking in the rubber. The transmission is a Nag 1 the cup plugs leak all the time. I've worked for Chrysler since 93 and I don't know what you mean by a normal Hemi tick. I wish could hear the exact noise your referencing. The injectors tick very loud even more so starting 2011.they put noise insulation over the rails to help. The lifter rollers wear out and wipe out the cam lobes. That happens because they moved the cam higher in the block for better valve train geometry. Now the cam does not get constantly bathed in as much oil and there is no oil gally feed to the lifter bores for lubrication. It gets whatever washes over the lifters. If you hear a lifter tick that means the lifter roller is worn and the cam is getting scored. If you have a misfire and you want to determine if it's a bad cam. Do 4 or 5 Accelerations to the redline. Then the engine will start to misfire bad Let it idle and it will smooth out. When the ramp on the cam lobe is damaged it causes the lifter to collapse on hard acceleration. Even if you don't hear a tick it can still be a bad cam.
@3pAcsJs3 жыл бұрын
i try to never let my hemi idle for very long due to this exact reason, i always try to keep the oil pressure around 50-60 lbs, its only got 10k miles on it now so wish me luck! thanks for going into detail on this subject.

@moparedtn3 жыл бұрын
Our 2012 Charger R/T is very similar to this one, except for it being black with leather interior. I'm a proponent of the late-model Chrysler hemis - I've owned three, had others for company trucks and all of them have been rock-solid and dependable. We still own my '04 Ram 4x4 hemi that I bought new; it's pushing 200k miles as well and has been silly reliable and solid. We've also owned an '06 Charger R/T, which was traded in on the 2012 when it was new. They're a lot of fun for the money, very comfortable and the aftermarket is strong, too. Yes, that oil pressure switch is a common replacement item on them; I just replaced the one on the 2012 after the dreaded "99psi" issue and don't let Wizard fool you - that mother is a bear to get to, especially if you have large man-hands like me. You wind up having to get under the car and temporarily removing the alternator to access it... As for the "tick", I've only witnessed it in my Ram and only when it's cold; it dissipates fairly quickly once it's been running a minute. Relax about the tick, people - as Wizard says, it's not a big deal. I keep the oil changed in all our hemi vehicles and I only use Mobil1 in them, along with good Hastings filters. I'd rather spend the money on oil changes now than engine rebuilds later. Oh, and even the "base" hemi 5.7 (370hp) is a quick animal, too - our 2012 ran a 13.94 stock when new; I took it down the track just for the fun of it and it surprised me a little. Not bad for a 4000+ pound full dresser car - and on long trips, the car is in the high 20's on fuel economy, too. I'm pleased Wizard agrees with me on these - they're good engines, always have been. -Ed on the Ridge

Great video! I feel these cars get underrated by people. I have one and I have a family member with a 300 which has a ton of miles. They have been very reliable and they get decent highway MPG. I watched this whole video waiting to hear the tick!!! I'll take your word for it on being benign. Our PD is retiring its Hemi Chargers (our newest one is 2013 now, I think), and we keep a couple out at the academy for EVOC training. Those things had a whole life on the road and that life wasn't easy. And now they get beat on by half a class of trainees! Brake pads every 3 months, oil changes every 6, etc. These things get punished. Not a lot of miles getting put on anymore, but the miles they get are brutal. Similar mileage to what yours is showing here. I started one up and I thought the lifters were collapsed. TICK TICK TICK TICK. I wonder how long these motors last before giving it up. I was impressed that they still run well and do their thing with 200k of cop life under the belt.
@JohnSmith-pl2bk3 жыл бұрын
see comment from Tech13: The injectors tick very loud even more so starting 2011. They put noise insulation over the rails to help. The lifter rollers wear out and wipe out the cam lobes. That happens because they moved the cam higher in the block for better valve train geometry. Now the cam does not get constantly bathed in as much oil and there is no oil galley feed to the lifter bores for lubrication. It gets whatever washes over the lifters. If you hear a lifter tick that means the lifter roller is worn and the cam is getting scored. I f you have a misfire and you want to determine if it's a bad cam.

I don't know if this is down to my religious oil change schedule, the quality of oil and filters I use, or just dumb luck, but that engine has been extremely reliable in the 4 years I've had the car. The first generation of that platform was in 2005. I bought and still own one, a Dodge Magnum RT. It is rated to tow 3800lbs if it has the tow package that consisted of a larger radiator and special load leveling shocks on the rear. It came with a 2" receiver hidden hitch. I installed a Drawtite 1 1/4" hitch on mine that has the 3500lb rating. Yes the car can tow 3500lbs. My Hemi doesn't tick. It sounds like a sewing machine. But the 2005 thru 2008 Hemis didn't have variable cam timing.

Finally, the truth about the infamous hemi tick. I’ve seen several KZbin videos and read many articles about this. And while it’s not a good thing and the noise is not particularly pleasant, it’s not the end of the world either. And it’s more common than you think. Mid to late 70s General Motors 350 cu in engines, the workhorse engine of General Motors,, had valve train tick. My mother had it in her 1977 Olds Cutlass. My 1975 Pontiac Firebird had it. Here’s what the shop foreman said at the local Chevy shop. ‘Don’t worry about it.’
@sensiblebabyandreality68043 жыл бұрын
The issue with the Hemi 5.7l V8's tick is because the angle of the lifter bores is almost flat and the camshaft is much higher than the old 5.7l Hemi, from 2003 - 2008. This flat planed design gave better valvetrain geometry and increased power quite a bit. However due to this design, the oil would not sufficiently lubricate the valvetrain well, especially if it was idled a lot, when the RPM'S are generally below 950. What FCA failed to do was put in a higher volume, higher pressure oil pump and they hardened a lobe on the front camshaft lobe, which would have pumped the oil at greater rate during idle or low speeds and prevented such a catastrophe and the hardened cam lobe was harder on the lifters. While this issue is less than 5% of all Hemis, the next statement will help. There is a You Tuber by the name of Reignited and he is a Mopar Guru, especially when it comes to the 5.7l v8 hemis. He is the one who found that by putting a Hellcat oil pump in these 5.7l v8, which operates at a higher volume, that this issue was solved. The Hellcat engine oil pump is approximately between $700 - $1000 for the part and that is much cheaper than spending $5000 on rebuilding the top end of this engine. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJyxgIuNfL10eq8 As far as FCA/ Stellantis is concerned, and this is coming from a Mopar guy, most of FCA's vehicles are junk. The few reliable vehicles they make are the Grand Caravan and Town and Country, (2015 onwards, the 2008-2014 minivans had major electrical fuse box issues), 300, Challenger and Charger, Viper (2009 - 2017), Durango and the Ram 1500 with gas engines. They are not as reliable as Toyotas ( then again, which manufacture is? ) but these vehicles that I mentioned will last you a long time with minor repairs as long as you maintain them very well. Percentage wise, from a reliability standpoint, these vehicles are lemons approximately less than 5% of the time, thus it is generally speaking, very good buys. The new Pacifica, I haven't heard much about its reliability yet. It is still a recent vehicle. Their problematic vehicles are: the entire Jeep line up; all their Fiat vehicles; Journey, 200C and the 2012-16 Dart. These junk vehicles that I mentioned have a failure rate of between 10-30%. The 30% is for Fiat, Jeeps are 20-25% and the Dodges are between 10-20%. By failure, I mean it has given owners consistent headaches in a short period of time. These good and bad ratings are for all FCA / Stellantis vehicles from 2009 onwards.

The reason for the hemi tick is due to the shaft mounted stamped rockers. They are not pedestal rockers and due to them being stamped and having a little slop (intentionally) built into the shaft clearance it chatters a little.

In January we inherited a 2012 5.7L Ram with the Hemi tick upon start up. The tick quickly goes away. The exhaust manifold tick is a fairly easy repair, the roller/cam tick would be an expensive repair. The truck is very fun to drive, probably the most fun truck we have ever owned. At 138,000 miles we’re a bit apprehensive about keeping it. The body and frame are in mint (California truck) condition so even if the engine fails, it would be worth the money to repair it.
