Hey, Car Wizard! A very useful video. A word of caution regarding your solution: some Ford shop manuals advise against using compressed air to blow the tubes clear, as it could cause the tube to come off the nipple on the sheet metal. (And then you have another problem!) Instead, the shop manual recommends using a piece of old speedometer cable. Insert it, turn it as you feed it down the hole until you clear the blockage. I have used this method with great success. Keep the great videos coming!

I saw the warnings about the 09 Traverse 3.6 timing chains back when I had been looking at used vehicles and took it off my list. But then noticed it's the same engine that's used in the Camaro, Impala, GMC's, Buick's and Cadillac's. What's up with that? Turned out that GM had a problem with the first few runs of the 3.6 timing chains with the 09 model Traverse and the reputation seemed to stick with it for quite a while. The good part was that GM extended the warranty to 10 years and 120,000 miles. Because of the reputation you could find really great deals on the early model Traverses if you found one that was within the 120K warranty period. Another complaint was that aftermarket timing chains would only last another 30,000 miles or so. And that's the same complaint I see for the less expensive made in China timing components.

I have another comment on this vid, but as far as I know they fixed it with 2010 model year. I had a 2010 from new to 100k miles with no issues, including towing boats and enclosed trailers. My father in law had an 08 or 09 Acadia and had the timing chains stretch early on under warranty.
@leediffenderfer93262 күн бұрын
GM does this with pretty much every engine they make to keep manufacturing costs down, if they make one engine that can be utilized in 5 different models as opposed to making 5 different but similarly powered V6s for each different car, the cost difference in that method is a no brainer, they will still be more profitable fixing every 3.6 then trying to make a special powertrain for every car, a lot of Automakers other then GM do this, Toyota Camrys and Toyota RAV4’s after 2018 are also mechanically almost identical, same with Malibus and Equinox’s

With all due respect , I vehemently opposed this repair procedure. Using compressed air from the top side can dislodge the drain hose which most likely cannot be reconnected. The correct procedure is to use a pipe cleaner or a long strand of string trimmer to insert and dislodge the gunk.
@JoshJones-373343 күн бұрын
You can split/crack the lines too. It’s best to do this only if you can turn down the hose pressure to 20ish pounds.
@digitalrailroader3 күн бұрын
Unfortunately for you, I checked 8 different factory service manuals from GM from as far back as 1975 and as far forward as 2014 from my personal library, and they ALL say to use compressed air (some specify 35PSI or less likely for your specific reason) to clear small blockages in sunroof drain hoses; and if the blockage cannot be removed by compressed air, the procedure is to remove the blocked drain hose from the vehicle entirely and use mechanics wire to physically remove the blockage. If GM didn’t want you to use compressed air at all, they would have had you just replace the sunroof drain hoses outright every time, and that adds up to be a prohibitively expensive job because the technician would basically have to dismantle the vehicle interior to access the drain hoses.

The thermostat was on the back of the engine, and they were North South F/R in the Commodore. Replacing the Thermostat was an 8 hour job, as it was jammed up close to the firewall. The problem with the 3.6 initially was it was a car engine…when they put it in the suv it put a lot more load on it and revealed the issue. They upgraded the chains (they would stretch) with the 2010s as far as I know. Another data point was my father in law had a 2008 or 09 Acadia and it had the timing chains stretch early on while under warranty (no towing either).

From what I've read the '17 and newer are the LGZ & LGX series. It's a clean sheet of paper new engine. No parts interchange with the previous 3.6 v6. The timing chain setup is completely different 2 chains instead of 3. How it will hold up remains to be seen. People claim to have Colorados/Canyons with over 200k and no engine issues.

If you fix the timing chain issue on the older 3.6s. They can be decent motors. My aunt has over 180,000 on hers with little to no trouble.

Gf had a 2014 and it blew the timing chain right around 150,000 km's. As soon as we put in a used motor with a new timing chain kit ($5400 later) that SUV got the immediate punt out of the garage. We weren't giving it a second chance. It was a hand me down vehicle from her parents, so I couldn't blame her for keeping it as long as she did. Bought a 2012 MDX instead and it is so much nicer.

It helps if you do not park your car outside all the time with leaves dumping all over it. That's where a lot of the clogging debris comes from.

I’m so glad my new corolla doesn’t have a sunroof 😅 furthermore, I’m glad it isn’t a GM product

My mom had a 19 a few years ago (when it was like a 2 year old car) and it was nothing but issues, it was burning oil at 60,000 miles which required them to rebuild the top of the engine, then it still was burning oil after the repair so they replaced the 60,000 mile engine with a brand new one which fixed the main issue but then the breaks went out so we got rid of that piece of junk after that.

What's even worse is when water collects behind the headliner requiring it to be pulled and cleaned to prevent mold.

Dont blow to hard if they are plugged you can blow the hose off and then you have more problems ive used little wires to clean out also

Sunroof drains are a maintenance item. If you don’t maintain your vehicle you’ll experience avoidable problems.
@DavidBugea3 күн бұрын
@@morstyrannis1951Exactly. I have no idea why, but I like them. And if you park in a garage and blow out the drains every few months you’re less likely to have any problems.

The rear sunroof blind probably broke the clip that closes it. It happened to mine and I fixed it super cheap.

Most import brands don't have a dealer in many small towns in America while Chevy and many domestic automakers still do have a presence in these places, many of them far from the bigger cities that do have a Toyonda dealership.

The 3.6 V6 ,a GM global engne. Australia and NZ had these engines inHolden Commodore from 05 onwards,before was the beloved 3.8 V6 . When the timing chain stretch issues started the tried ro correct the fault with a computer ,that failed and then the "well sir you need a new tining chain kit which is more than just timing chains,and then was the carbon build up due to crankcase ventilation issues and service intervals not being met,the sludge factor ,so now they had a good car except nobody would risk buying one , because of the issues. The quoted prices for repair was thousands. Funny that when Australians and NZers researched part , they found that the Cadillacs used the same motor and parts numbers when crossed refrenced were the same ,cheap even with freight from the USA . The GM denials of there was no issue was an eye opener .
Ah the old Chevy Perverse…. I can still hear them chain rattling along the road….

That is why I hate vehicles with a sunroof. It's just another added expense that is prone for leaks and wear in the long run. It's a feature I really don't care much about. Car manufatlcturer just need to make that an option only. People that want them are not the brightest when it comes to features. What they don't know is the cost of replacing them when they failed or started leaking.

I have a 2017 Honda Pilot. It was the worst vehicle I’ve ever owned. The injectors went out at 60k and the bearings went out at 80k miles catastrophic engine failure. It’s a common issue with the 3.5 V6 in this vehicle with recalls on 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020. The 2017 is the only model without the recall. NHTSA has just done another investigation last week!! I contacted Honda the refused to fix it!! I will never buy another Honda Again!!
