I've never had a cheaper car in terms of spare parts than a golf. Because of the sheer mass of produced golfs, there is a giant market of aftermarket part suppliers. Brakes for my golf 3 are 60€ for all wheels together.

They aren't very fast though so not really much of a sleeper - I mean my Sister has one and it's nice to drive and all and doesn't feel slow, but my turbo falcon leaves it for dead like it was a golf cart, mostly due to RWD - FWD cars are just never that fast off the line on the street. I have a 2017, it is as good as the car magazines say. Handles like a go-cart, zero understeer despite FWD, plenty of power for the size, great fuel economy (as long as you drive conservatively) interior quality on par with a lower end luxury car like an Acura, and as practical as a small SUV. My only concern is reliability and cost of repairs, as VW isn’t known to be great in either department.
@JohnnyAmerique

@@Beer_Dad1975 The Europeans tend to build cars for handling more than straight line performance. More power/torque is pretty much maxed out for FWD in the GTI; 258 ft-lbs of torque from the factory is more than enough to rapidly turn the fronts into smoke if you turn the traction control off.

The welds on the left front rim are indicative of the impracticality of the low-profile tires. I'm not even sure that they LOOK that good. But, I would want larger profile tires and I always buy a full spare tire and I carry a small hydraulic jack (no donuts or repair kits). Reduces trunk space, but it is SO convenient when you get a flat (when and if).
@MrDuncl
@MrDuncl 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. My Golf MK7 came with 16" wheels and a space saver spare, but I swapped it for a full size spare which fits in the wheel well. I've been in the situation where my Father in laws Hyundai (which didn't have a spare) had to be taken to the tyre centre on the back of a recovery truck after a large bolt went through a sidewall. No amount of tyre sealant gunk would have fixed that.

Replacing the plastic water pump on the 2.0 TSI engine is a real pain in the ass as you have to remove the whole intake to get to it. Oh, and no cam cover gasket on this engine as there is no cam cover. . Instead, the cam bridge is adhered with the special VW green colored Anaerobic Flange Sealant (which gets old and then leaks oil down to the water pump swelling the rubber gaskets of the water pump flanges, cracking the plastic water pump, and causing it to leak.)
@MrCarGuy
@MrCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
The plastic water pumps are an inexcusable decision by VW.
@petejilka968
@petejilka968 3 жыл бұрын
 Yes. Any kind of oil leak that drips down to the water pump swells the rubber gaskets and blows out the plastic flanges causing it to leak. I went with the all aluminum one the last time I replaced the water pump on my CC. Hopefully, that is the last water pump I will have to replace.
@komentierer
@komentierer 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrCarGuy You clearly never work on modern cars. Every manufacturer I know of EXCLUSIVELY uses plastic water pumps in their current cars. You'll have to look to the aftermarket to find other options made of metal, because the aftermarket monetizes that fear of plastic. The truth is that the bearing in your water pump will wear out long, long, long before the plastic housing can cause any problems. Metal water pumps are noisier, more susceptible to vibration, more expensive and (if the rotor element is made of metal) even prown to higher rates of failure.
