Everyone knows intimate in reference typically to sexual partners, but it also is used to describe very close friends - to the level of typically know more about them then other friends and acquaintances. You’d let your child go on a weekend camping trip with your intimate friends family and kids, but you probably wouldn’t, or shouldn’t let them go with Karen who you see once a week down at the YMCA.

Nice catch, Mr. Wizard! Been working on new beetles since they hit the showrooms. With the 1.8t, take a few minutes to remove the cowl panel and wiper arms, then you can remove the lower plenum cover. It only has two bolts, then pull it out forward. Trust me on this one. You can then clean out the plenum, and you'll have all the room in the world to access the valve cover and timing belt. It will save you tons of time in the long run.

A timing/water pump job on a 1.8t is pretty easy. As long as you get the manual tensioner set correctly, yours good to go. On a beetle, it may be a bit difficult to get to the timing belt, due to how the engine is mounted. However when I did it on my 03 A4, very easy.

If I now tell you the parts prices of what that would cost you as a workshop in Germany, you would start to wheep: 2 front control arms 40€; 4 struts all included (strut bearings and all): 250-300€; timing belt/waterpump kit: 80€. The valve cover gasket probably around 10 bucks or so. Basically, still less then 500€ for the parts to fix this up.

I never thought I would love a beetle. I always thought they were dorky AF until a family friend made me an offer I couldn't refuse on his mom's 2000 Turbo Beetle GLX. Once I drove it, I was hooked. What a lively weirdo it is. I even grew to love its clean, bulbous look. And yes, there are a lot of Porsche-ish things about it. Especially the perfectly weighted hydraulic steering, direct shifter, the door latches that release with that mechanical pop of a 911 and two of the most comfortable leather seats I've ever sat in. I've had my own car wizard slowly upgrading the suspension and now its handling is sharp and direct. Mine had only 48K on it when I got it three years ago, it's at 78K now and has been relatively trouble free and is my daily driver. I'd love to find a clean S someday!

Kinda fun watching the Wizard nerd out over a Beetle. I work on VWs for a living and the girlfriend has had a Beetle longer than I've known her. After a few upgrades to that car, it's become one of my favorite cars to drive. Kind of funny how that happens. Her's being without a sunroof has also made it the car with the most head room I think I've ever been in. It's pretty awesome for a tall person. After you get dampers sorted and upgrade the control arm bushings, they are quite possibly the most fun to drive car on the PQ34 platform short of the Audi TT. Speaking of the control arm bushings, Wizard, I implore you to buy just the bushings, and specifically buy the bushings for an Audi TT or 2004 R32. Preferably the Lemforder brand, or if not available, the Febi-Bilsteins or Meyle HDs are OK. I say this because the original bushings on these were designed to have a fair bit of give in them, which also leads to them eventually tearing and allowing MUCH more play like your Beetle is exhibiting. But the R32 and TT rear bushings for the front control arms don't have those cut outs. Not only does this mean much more direct feeling steering response, but it also seems to make them more reliable in the long run (especially if you get your hands on the Lemforder brand bushings). PLUS, you don't have to pay attention to the orientation when you're pressing them into the arms. I know buying all new arms is easier and faster for a mechanic most days, but they really aren't that hard to press in and out. And the upgrade to the TT/R32 bushings is one I cannot recommend highly enough for any PQ34 or even Mk2 or 3. The bushing size actually interchanges all the way back to the Mk2 Jettas and Golfs, also fits B3 and B4 Passats too.
@dzelpwr

I'm going to throw in there that I did have a Beetle a customer traded to me for work on his much newer Touareg. It was a 2000 Beetle TDI, silver like yours, and had bigger injectors and a tune. Also was bolted to a 5 speed manual instead of that horrid 01M slushbox automatic. It apparently had a minor fender bender in the front years ago and he installed a Votex front end on it that looks a lot like the Turbo S front end with the round blinkers next to the headlights. I like that look a lot. And it was a surprisingly fun car to drive. I sold it a couple months ago, probably broke even on just parts cost alone spent to fix it. Hole in a AC line, needed control arm bushings too, sagging headliner, turbo vane mechanism was sticking, heater core started leaking at one point, injection pump needed new seals and then the clutch started slipping, so I replaced that too with a better Sachs single mass kit. Actually got away with a lot of those fixes for very cheap, but it just all added up and was a lot of time invested. But it was a solid car when I was done and the new owner is happy. That's all that matters. I do kind of miss it, though.

I thought when you opened trunk w/ Tyler in back and was waiting to hear "Don't forget to ring that Bell" . Nice example of a TS. I have an '03 where the most extensive engine work I've done to it was replace the ignition wires as the old ones were old and shorting on the top of the engine. It needs a valve cover gasket change like this one but also needs new o rings on the injectors. Unfortunately, I was one of those people who test raced it and landed it in a ditch. Surprising it drove out of the ditch and only the rocker panel was dented and a hole was punched into the front bumper from the intercooler but the intercooler came out unscathed. Tough car for sure.

I loved my 2002 turbo S. Had mines for a long time, brought mines in 2004 with 6,000 miles on it. I had to get rid of mines in 2016 because I needed something bigger and AWD to help take care of my best friend in another state and the weather get bad in his area and I had to make sure I could get him to the hospital when I needed to in which I did. Car had 248,000 miles on it when I let it go and ran great. Had actually been thinking about getting another one. I had fun with that car

Don't know how experienced you are with these 1.8t engines but change the chain tensioner "gasket plate"+half moon while you have the rocker cover off. For those reading this and are unaware there is a small chain connecting the camshafts inside there - there is a half moon shaped seal "plug" underneath the tensioner. The half moon has pretty surely morphed itself to plastic from rubber already and leaking. Though you need the tool to compress and hold the chain tensioner but it doesn't need to be removed fully, just the bolts holding it on while it's compressed. I always change the tensioner seals on "this type" of engines (same setup found on the same time period V6 engines also) when doing a rocker cover gasket. ~15 minutes of extra work and the tensioner seal kit costs "nothing".

It's other measures as well like design of cars, where the front bumper is , how the pedestrian travels over the car if they get hit. Quite obviously if you get hit by a heavy metal object travelling at speed you are going to come off worse , but the EU have tried to make the outcome of low speed impacts better for pedestrians and cyclists.

@@Hotlog69 not really no, new bonnets are made to crumple/flect when hit by a body. but dont believe me, ceck out some new european crash tests in the pedestrian section, they show that in full hd videos. Hi Wizard. The exhaust has a joining sleeve with 2 nuts and bolts. Occasionally one will come loose and you tighten the bolts up and it still comes loose. So fixing it like they have is the next best thing to replacing the joining sleeve. We had quite a few that had leaky struts and shocks. we replaced them with Japanese KYB Gas struts. they are far better and they last well. Being VW Pressure test the cooling system and check the coolant outlets on the motor as they crack and leak . From memory the cooling fans are the same as the MK5 golf and they rotate all the time . When the get older they get sloppy and fail electrically and they aren't cheap. The usual story with the 2 year window regulators. (life expectancy) The black coating comes off the switches but they are cheap. In New Zealand where i am we get a lot of Japanese and Singaporean imports. The Japanese ones are usually good but the Singaporean ones get cooked by the climate there. Hot and humid so the air con compressors and interior fan don't last long etc and they stink of bami gorang (Malaysian curry) sweated into the upholstery. Off on a tangent here. We got some Malayisian Merc w140 320s from an importer for us to get ready for sale here in NZ. The heaters didnt work in them and they were otherwise good cars. Its never cold enough to need a heater in Singapore. We took a look at them and found 5/8 aluminium plugs with hose clips in the heater hoses. So we clamped the hoses and undid the hose clips and squeezed the plugs out and reconnected it all and ran them up all done. We did this to all 6 of them. 2 months later they all came back within a week of each other with coolant in the nice white carpet. Oh joy. The heater hoses connect to aluminium tubes with "O" rings on them that are attached to the heater core. They have never had coolant through them and go hard. We've struck it on other Singaporean cars too.
