Honda Civic Type R Generations DRAG RACE

Civic Type R fans, this one’s for you!
We’ve got our hands on every generation of Civic Type R, and they’re about to face off over the quarter mile to see just how much the Type R has evolved since 2001!
Now of course, it should come as no surprise that the older editions come at a disadvantage when it comes to power output. If you take a look at the original EP3, it comes with a 2-litre naturally-aspirated engine (with VTEC!) that can produce 200hp and 196Nm of torque. In comparison, the all-new FL5 comes with a 2-litre turbo petrol engine that can produce 320hp and 420Nm!
But of course, don’t forget that they’re all on a level playing field in that they’re all FWD, and they’re all manuals! The question is, will the new FL5 prove to be worth its eye-watering £47,000 price tag?

Honestly I'm a big fan of the FN2 (spaceship one). i love the styling and the fact that it's the last 3-door civic type r and naturally aspirated. That plus that it's not that heavy makes it my pick despite the outright speed disadvantage.

I used to own an FN2 before I bought my FK8 and while I love my FK8 I also have a soft spot for the older FN2, something really special about it, has so much character and handles superbly. Type R's where never about 0-60 times anyways

Very true and the interior in the FN2 looks was years ahead of any car of its time and still looks funky now. I have a GT one with the cruise control and all the extra climate control etc and it even has speech control in it. And let's not forget the seats If it wasn't for the FN2 as the grandad, it's grandchildren wouldn't have these features. Plus what they didn't clearly show was the sound of the VTech in the older cars beats any other newer ones. I've driven them all and they're yawnville compared with the sound. Just a slight mod on the FN2 you get so much more power for the money. The later ones. Yes, they have the turbo power and are very quick but you can't use it anywhere on our British roads anyway. 200 horsepower is plenty to have fun, especially on the back roads.

Not a soft limiter on the NA civics. It's the non VTEC cam lobe. VTEC requires wheel speed and oil pressures etc etc to engage. The small lobe isn't designed for revs so the ignition system is cutting out of the power for that lobe.

I think it's deliberate as a soft limiter as the EK series does not have it. They can rev to their rev limits in neutral.

Contrary to Mat's opinion, I think the Fn2 has aged the best! Sharp looking thing for an ~18 year old design, without any of the fussiness of it's successors. The EP3 is iconic and brilliant, but it looks like a van.

Yeah, I reckon FN2 actually age well on considering it still have aggressive looks not not overly stylise than most modern cars. Interior may be look plain by modern standards, but that curved big 3D style dash on the bottom still unique and if it's a full LCD, it could look modern. FK8 may be the one look dated in the future since Honda is now going for more subdued and mature looks. Though FK8 will be unique over stylise car in the future for sure.

Love my EP3 had mine since June 2020, 137k for £3500 1 owner from new. Loved it, spent a lot of money and could spend double again and not be satisfied. Sitting at 153k and still sings away to 8600rpm. Such easy cars to work on I've self taught myself a lot of mechanical and service work all because of Honda's especially the older generations, would have been good if you could have got an EK9 in the mix too!

FN2 aged very well, and i think it will be considered as one of the greatest designs honda ever made. Doesn't have that cheap plastic tunning look, the newer models have. Too bad it's a bit heavy and slow, but it's NA, the others have turbo. There is a faster MUGEN version. FK2 looks better today, than it looked when it came out, i agree

I had an EP3 exactly like that one, what a great car. I was 20 when I got it, had it for 3 years and still miss it to this day. I’ll never forget the sadness I felt trading it in 🤣🤣 usually you are excited getting a new car. Not that day. I have an FK2 black edition now and have zero plans on ever getting rid of it. There are so many things I love about CarWow over other car shows, but the drag races aren't one of them. They are so boring, and have little to do with a car's actual performance. A time trial around a track, or a set of challenges (a la old Top Gear) would be much more entertaining and an actual indication of the performance of the car.

Can we all agree that the day we lost full VTEC to a turbo was a sad day? This is what Honda Australia said about turbos back in the good old days: "No bolting on of a turbocharger to give silly power figures. All Type R engines are normally-aspirated, which deliver smoother power delivery throughout the rev range, allowing power to be transferred through the chassis more easily, improving traction and acceleration"

still loved my two ep3s with a cheap and loud exhaust while hitting the rev limiter :) especially loved the independent wheel suspension and my Swiss version had a differential as standard. a perfect fun machine for our Alps here. You could go almost all the time in 2nd gear, with the little vtec screaming. So reliable and so cheap to maintain. ek9 and fd2 are not in the video..sadly.

I chose the FK2 over FK8 as it had a handbrake and 4 pipes and not poo pipes in the middle. Looks like that was a good decision. Had an Integra Type R before that. No one has ever put Breadvan against DC2 Integra Type R on film - be good to see it added to the mix on one of these

Mine is standard and I love it . Compared to the newer models it's more raw and definitely a hatch , new ones are more saloons I'd say , don't think I'll trade for a fk8 as I like how rare fk2 is

As a previous owner of 2 EP3 CTRs, I was pleased to see it still held its own. It was always quicker than the FN2 as proved by Top Gear many years ago. Great vid and really enjoyed it, great banter too!

@@CGHDGAMING I timed both when I had them and the fn2 was always ever so slight quicker to 100 mph, most videos on KZbin also show the fn be atleast equal to the ep3 and most show it to be faster which is the result I got. It’s even been shown on this show to be as fast, the guy in this video can’t drive a manual car.

Super happy to finally have my own ep3 as well! Remember watching the old civic drag race video & hearing it get praised for how it takes turns, couldnt wait until I was finally old enough to get my hands on one... Cant say much about the other ctr's but I love my ep3 and I love how they all look!

Obviously power to weight ratio plays the major role here . The FN2 Type R is my favorite here. By far the best looking, it has the best 4 cylinder ever made and an amazing chassis. Sure Honda wasn’t able to release the car with 230hp from factory because of European emissions on 2007… but just look at the Mugen version.. 🔥 The potential is ALL THERE. Love my Champ more and more 😍

There's very little difference in performance between any of the turbo generations and they share lots of chassis DNA too but the FK2 just too hard , for UK roads. FK8 fixed that and its a lot more supple.

I loved my regular 1.4 Civic FN8, my first car. Still I was secrectly wishing I had that red Type R. Now I would still be willing to consider buying a Type R, if it was AWD and it had an automatic gearbox. Yes, I got used to comfort with age :-)

Not always just about straight line acceleration. Cornering, steering feel, overall handling, comfort, refinement, build quality and tech/features count just as much. On track tests the new model gas already shown to be faster due to its better brakes and improved suspension dynamics.

​@@sarasijghosh I absolutely understand this point of view, but for the fraction of time most people would be racing their CTR, I wouldn't trade the comfort and convenience of the newest one for any of the other models, even if it's marginally slower (as you saw, it doesn't get passed in a roll race with older models until well near 140 MPH). If it has been tuned to provide must power in the gears and speeds most people will drive them (let's say 30-80 MPH?), it'll be more fun for the casual driver while still being a far nicer car to spend your daily commute in. If you're buying the Type R only to race... IDK, you could buy something quicker for cheaper.

My FN2 has 208 HP and 198 Nm on a dyno and I still love it since 2007. Maybe they should try a mugen FN2 or a championship white one with a dif. 😉

Saw some comments regarding the horsepower numbers not matching what people were seeing online so heres a little insight. The UK and Japan dont have the same emission standards as the US so for example the fk8 makes 320 PS or 316 hp in the UK spec vs 306hp in the US and the fl5 makes 315hp in the US while making 329hp in the UK

How does it compare to an FK8 to drive? I found the FK8 waaay too focused on lap times and no fun at all, the FL5 is apparently more fun focused (but still less than basically all other hot hatches) but I've always thought the FK2 was a little more mad, which is a very good thing imo. Never driven an FK2 myself though...
