Dyno testing shows that above 80mph (I don't remember exact speed), the Performance and AWD produces the same HP and torque. The Performance is definitely producing more power at lower speeds. The Performance and AWD shares the same motor, but the performance is a better binned motor. The AWD is software locked to lower power. The reason the 2021 Performance lost to the 2020 Long Range at higher speeds in this video is because for the 2021 Model 3 refresh, Tesla changed the battery temperature profile for increased efficiency to reduce heating the battery. However, that means the 2021 Model 3's generally have lower battery temperatures while driving, which significantly reduces performance in cold weather and lower battery levels. The 2018-2020 Model 3s do not have this issue. You can see more about this in the video below. This is a big issue that I hope Tesla fix with an OTA update. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKKqg2mOaryZnsU

@AllanSustainabilityFan3 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing one difference may be the size/weight of the tires, perhaps at high speeds that's a slight drag on acceleration. The main benefit of Performance trim is track mode, which lets you adjust the traction for whatever event you're planning to participate in, it also lets the battery cooling operate at a higher level, to help the vehicle maintain that level of performance for extended periods of time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGWpk2mKpKaabM0 And perhaps on the track it theoretically could make sense to optimize for stronger acceleration below 70mph, in order to dart out of those twists and turns and make up time on the deceleration around corners and such. No idea if this actually a factor though.

Hi all, I’ll add my comments here... 1) The speed difference at higher end seems to be down to this new bigger pack in the newer performance. It just lacks output at higher speeds, at least in these colder conditions. Maybe on warmer days it’s different, but from my own tests so far it’s consistently slightly slower than LR 75kwh cars above 50mph. 2) a Long Range with “acceleration boost” (a £1500 option which can be unlocked from owners app) would sit right in between the performance and the Lr off the line. Above 50mph it would be the same as the Long Range. 3) for new performance v old performance, stay tuned to this channel. 4) braking... I’m 95kg in weight thanks Mat 😂🤔. The newer performance has Pirelli’s and I’m not a fan of them in cold weather. They’re also narrower than the Michelin’s that used to be on performance (2cm less on the road per tyre).

If that is a 2021 performance, Bjorn Nyland found it suffered heavily from the new heat pump setup in cooler temperatures. The heat pumps pulls the heat from the battery resulting in poor power output, making it slower than the LR in some conditions. That could be the reason the 2020 LR caught up with it as the day went on, the P could have been suffering from a cold battery.

The Long Range AWD is really just a software-locked performance model. There are third party modules out there that will take an older Long Range AWD and turn it into a Performance model. I'd assume the reason why the Performance model lost is because after many repeated runs at full performance, the battery was getting hot. Whereas the Long Range at locked-performance wasn't being fully utilized, so the battery was cooler.

This is everything you need to know about the M3P, straight from Travis: I keep hearing people say “State of Charge affects acceleration in the Model 3 the most”. While State of Charge does affect acceleration. The temperature of the battery mid pack is the single most important factor for determining how fast the Model 3 Performance will accelerate. This video will show you why that is. The absolute quickest acceleration in the Model 3 Performance is achieved when the battery pack temperature is between 125 to 137 degrees Fahrenheit, the State of Charge is 100%, and the motors are as cold as possible. That will give you a “Max Discharge Value” of 629 HP or 462 KW at the battery. However, this video will look at the cases where those parameters are not at their optimal values. If State of Charge drops to 87% but battery temperatures remain at 135 degrees Fahrenheit, the “Max Discharge Value” will still be 615 HP. That is only a 2% drop in performance even with less than 90% SOC. However, if we raise the SOC from 87% to 89% and drop the temperature in the battery down to 42 degrees Fahrenheit or 5.8 degrees C then the “Max Discharge Value” will drop all the way down to 365 KW or 496 HP. That would be a MASSIVE 20% decrease in performance from battery temperature alone. In this case we have increased the SOC by 2% but lost 10 times the amount of performance because the battery is cold. I can’t stress this enough. Battery temperatures affect acceleration so much that the battery SOC becomes irrelevant if the battery is cold. To illustrate the point even further I tested this with the SOC at 55% and the battery Temperature at 122 degrees F. The max discharge rate was 570 HP. That is almost 70 HP greater than the cold battery at 89%. Imagine keeping up with someone at 89% SOC when you only had 55% SOC. At 76% SOC with the battery at 119.3 degrees F you still can achieve a 598 HP Max Discharge Value. That is only 5% off the absolute maximum acceleration potential with a ¼ of the battery gone. Even if we go down to 32% SOC of charge with a more normal 88.7 Degree F battery we can still have a 511 HP Max Discharge Value. We can go as low as 16% SOC with a 118.4 Degree F battery and still have a 496 HP Max Discharge Value. That equals the 496 HP we saw in the earlier example with an 89% SOC and a 42 degree F battery. You can get a similar Max Discharge value from 16% SOC as you can with 89% SOC in this scenario. This really is important to stress to everyone. However, I must also tell you that my testing has shown that the affects of heating the battery don’t come into play until after 40 mph. If you heat the battery hoping to see 20% or more improvement in 0-60 mph it won’t happen. Cold motors are actually more important for 0-60 mph in the Model 3 Performance. Once you pass 40 mph and especially after you hit the peak HP at 55 mph you will see a significant increase in performance regardless of the State of Charge. The lowest Max Discharge Value I have seen was 351 HP at 6% SOC when I drove 283 miles without charging in my 2 year old Model 3 Performance. I still had 18 miles left of range too. However, the car was EXTREMELY slow at that point. However, there is one benefit to a low SOC. The max regen braking capabilities only occur at a lower SOC with a hot battery. In sport mode you will only see about 116 HP of regen with a fully preconditioned battery. However, in Track Mode with a 118.4 degrees F battery and with 16% battery SOC I saw 241 HP of regen braking capabilities. That is extremely strong braking from regen alone. It is important to also understand that the scenarios I have displayed here only apply to the Model 3 Performance. Battery temperature may not affect the Long Range car’s acceleration in exactly the same way. Eventually I would like to test non Performance models and even the Model X and Model S to see how temperature affects those cars. I have seen several videos that indicate that the Model S Plaid is capable of achieving more than 1,100 HP at the battery if the conditions are optimal. However, that car in particular really needs cold motors and better tires for optimal performance.

I think it’s the wrong badge on the back as I have a stealth performance model 3 and the only options for acceleration are chill and sport. Checking the registration for the one Matt is driving it shows up as long range model 3 (mine correctly shows as a performance model 3). Can it be that the battery and drivetrain of the performance model is near or at the temperature limit (increased heat due to more performance) and therefore the performance has been limited? But still, it’s highly disturbing and disappointing. @carwow can you do a similar drag race with the Model S variants?
@Unkn0wnC0mmand3 жыл бұрын
Highly doubt it's temps. Model 3 P stays cool as mess even under repeated quarter mile runs. I've tracked mine for 50 minutes of near full throttle usage in track mode and rarely get above yellow temp zones and I guarantee the temps where I live are way higher than where carWOW is filmed. I'm in Florida in USA. The difference here is wheels. The stock uberturbine wheels on the 2021 M3P weigh over 62lbs EACH. At higher speed, they're a devil to turn faster. M3P uberturbine wheels outweigh the wheels on the model 3 LR by nearly 40%. Using 19" Martian Wheels, my M3P does the quarter-mile in 11.51 seconds. That would be 2-3 car lengths ahead of the Model 3 LR. Put the same wheels on each car and you'll see the m3p steadily pull away from the long range in every scenario. i1 Tesla channel has already done that test. These electrics have nutty instant torque but only ~450 horsepower. That heavy wheel weight at higher speeds really affects performance more than at lower speeds. Until about 50mph, it's a torque game. After that horsepower matters more and those super heavy wheels on the m3p are whats slowing it down.

@@Unkn0wnC0mmand Thanks for the clarification. So you mean the wheels matter this much more than the 90hp motor power difference?
@Unkn0wnC0mmand3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrasHatvani 40% more unsprung weight makes a massive difference in acceleration above 50mph, especially on electric. You won't find a single competitive model 3 drag racer using stock wheels. Martian Wheels in 18" size weigh 21lbs. Stock UberTurbine are north of 62lbs. That much unsprung weight is a crazy big difference. In this video, the UberTurbines only weight around 40% more than the smaller aeros, but more than enough to explain why the LR is able to catch the performance on top end. A true test of the different versions is to have everything identical except the drivetrains. This video doesn't do that. With identical wheels the performance will pull away from the LR at 70+ mph similarly to how the LR pulls on the performance in this video at the higher speeds. That coupled with the much faster performance acceleration from 0, means it isn't even close, as there isn't a speed where the LR would close the gap. Plus the performance has a higher top speed, though the distance to get there would be beyond the length of any conventional race. Either way, I can guarantee you that the Model 3 performance in this video isn't suffering from heat issues. I've beat the hell out of mine on tracks in 85F+ weather and it hasn't even blinked.
@AndrasHatvani3 жыл бұрын
@@Unkn0wnC0mmand I accept your arguments, but not the weight numbers: you compared the martian wheels' weight without tires to the Überturbines with tires. According to this thread teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/2021-uberturbine-wheel-weight.217884/ the Überturbine wheels with tires weigh 54,5 lbs and 32 lbs without. So they are "just" 50% heavier than the 18" Martians. I hope @carwow will do these races with identical trims again.

Would there be a difference in the outcome if the Performance was in track mode? My guess is the larger brakes and heavier wheel package are severely hurting the higher speed performance.
@italianstallion3992 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right about that. The moment of inertia of the larger brakes and wheels takes away from acceleration. It is also costly for range. On the long range model, the standard 18” (same as on Matt’s car here) gets 25 miles more range than the 19” upgrade. Yes it’s not the most elegant wheel especially since it has a hubcap but it’s cheaper, more economical and faster. That’s why I’ve always said it’s silly for people that buy sports cars to put ridiculously large rims on them. You’re just robbing performance. You’re also reducing the internal air volume which makes the ride harsher.
