Wow! So many twists and turns in this investigation that completely wrong-footed the German police. Just my opinion, but this has been the most interesting case yet - and a lesson to investigating bureaux to keep an open mind to *_all_* possibilities. It's so easy to become so entrenched in a technology like fingerprints - or DNA - that one thinks it can't go wrong.

The detectives who carried out the investigation into the murder of officer Michèle Kiesewetter and the attempted murder of her partner had believed that they were attacked by members of the German far right terrorist group; The Nationalist Socialist Underground (or the NSU). Before the murder of Officer Kiesewetter and the attempted murder of her partner, the NSU were responsible for 12 other attacks throughout Germany between the 23rd June 1999 and the 6th April 2006. In those 12 attacks, the victims were immigrants of Turkish, Greek and Kurdish descent in which nine were shot and killed and 24 others were injured. The weapon used in the attack of the officers was a CZ83 semiautomatic pistol with a silencer, the same weapon used in the other attacks. The NSU were also linked to 14 bank robberies.
