Case of the tardy two pipe system

In this case, the school had a two pipe hydronic system. In the winter, hot water would flow through the pipes. In the summer, chilled water would be used. The challenge was the time it took to switch over from heating to cooling. It would take anywhere from several hours to a day before the loop temperature dropped enough to allow it into the chiller. I hope you like the solution I suggested.

Ray, love your videos and knowledge! I have a question if you do not mind? I was wondering what your thoughts are on of all these wall hung condensing units that plumbers are installing (replacing conventional boilers that vent through a chimney) in houses with baseboard heating? From what I understand these units are really designed for radiant heat systems, which if correct, runs a water temperature around 110 degrees, but the plumbers jack the temp to 180 degrees on these units, therefore turning a condensing boiler into a non condensing boiler. Am I wrong? if so, are there drawbacks to this? Thank You!

Thats a great question. I believe the wall mounted boilers have their place. There a couple of drawbacks to using those type of boilers. The first is they require more maintenance than a standard type of boiler. The second is the lifespan of those type boilers are much less than a traditional type of boiler. I would hope the installer tells the owner this prior to installation. The benefit is they take much less space than a floor boiler. Standard heating systems were designed using 180 degrees supply water at the coldest outside air. If you have a condensing boiler, it will only condense for about a third of the winter.
