Case of Tifa: "Do you love me?" Canon Scene [Recreation]

The "Do you love me?" scene from Case of Tifa, the official novella written by Kazushige Nojima, the script writer of FFVII, recreated using scenes from the Advent Children movie.

It acts as a prologue to Advent Children, showing what happens with Cloud and Tifa in the two years between the ending of the game and the movie. It ultimately shows how Cloud ends up in his state in the movie through Tifa's eyes. It's one of 6 novellas.

After making certain that Cloud was asleep, she spoke to him.
Well be all right, wont we?
Of course, there was no answer. I only heard the sound of him sleeping. I wondered if the fact that he was sleeping here meant that he was part of the family.
Do you love me?
Cloud woke up, a perplexed look on his face.
Hey, Cloud. Do you love Marlene?
Yeah. But sometimes I dont know how to approach her.
Even though weve been together for some time?
Maybe that just isnt enough.
Even we arent enough for you?
Cloud didnt answer.
Sorry for asking some strange things.
Dont apologize. Its my problem.
Cloud closed his eyes.
Lets work hard together.
Tifa waited for his answer, though she couldnt hear it even if she waited until the morning.

What I love is that he answered with, "Yeah, but I don't know how to approach her." Which sorta sounds like he's actually answering Tifa's question, and is shy to just say it directly. After all, Cloud is still the shy Cloud we knew from Crisis Core, it's just that ever since his personality was merged with Zack's, along with the Sephiroth incidents, AND watching Aerith die just a few feet away from him, it makes him look...not that shy.

Tifa and Cloud have a chemistry that dates back to childhood. It had just remained dormant for so many years out of her own melancholy. Tifa evidently shows far more love for Cloud than Aerith ever had. I'm sure Cloud would recognize that. And that is one good reason that I believe Cloud would prefer Tifa. Besides, like I said, Tifa is a fuckton hotter. :P

Cloud is not interested in Tifa. They are only childhood friends. According to Square Enix, Cloud and Tifa are not an officially canon couple. However, Cloud and Aerith ARE.

In the "A turks side story- The kids are allright" novel in the end we see Cloud and Tifa happily walking around with Denzel and Marlene, and Cloud says to Evan and Kyrie that Tifa and the two kids are his family, this happens after the end of AC. Still no official confirmation of them being a canon couple, but looks like that is the path they are taking. Cloud is confused by Aerith, probably because of his false personality as Zack, but he and Aerith aren't a couple ... Nomura himself said so, last i heard anyway. Besides, Cloud said more than once he was always interested in Tifa durig the OG game, and admitted he wanted to enter SOLDIER to impress her.

I also do belive that SE did make their characters have feeling toward each others, just not as obvious as we want. But in the two novels above, since they had to speak up each characters' voice, things get a little clearer and this is what I concluded myself: - Aeris had feeling for Zack, but after years heard nothin from him, she was attracted by Cloud, first because he reminded her of Zack, but later she did fall for Cloud for his own personalities. - Tifa : obviously Cloud is her only one

When Tifa ask "do you love me" even when cloud is asleep he obviously want cloud to answer. Both of them are shy unable to say it directly "do you love marlene?" he answers "Yeah, but I dont know how to approach her" Obviously telling it to TIFA that he indeed love her. Cloud is traumatize by the death of his friend Zack and unable to overcome the shame he created a persona of Zack upon himself. this includes his attraction to Aerith. Aerith maybe loved cloud and not just seeing Zack in him.

@havoClinK It's debatable since it's never stated or made explicitly clear whether they do or don't share a bed. However, we are told that Tifa waits for him to fall asleep, and it's also implied that she waits for an answer until the morning (or at least even if she had waited she wouldn't have got one). What's more, her moving from her own room/bed or whatever to wait/listen for him to fall asleep and talk is never mentioned or really implied at.

It might be silly, but it is in fact true. Aerith was originally infatuated with Cloud simply because he reminded her of Zack. Eventually that evolved in to something more significant, but even that is meager to how Tifa feels. Perhaps I used my words wrong, but from a writer's perspective, Clerith is a shallow relationship that simply gives the illusion of depth. That said, I have more comments than what you responded to which are continuations of that. Maybe those can clarify things...

Cloud loves Tifa, that is the only real ship of the original game. He was confused by Aerith because of his false memories from Zack. In the OG he admits he always wanted to be noticed by Tifa, and that is the real reason he tried to join SOLDIER. After FFVII he and Tifa lives together, they put up a family with Marlene and Denzel and we know that they are happy initially. In Advent Children Cloud had a crisis due to his lack of self confidence , and the fact that he got Geostigma made him fear he'ld end up being a burden for his family. In the end of AC Cloud has forgiven himself and returns to his family. In the novel The kids are allright (the last chapter of which happens after the movie) he is still with Tifa and the children, and he says to Evan and Kyrie that is his family. They are still together in Dirge of Cerberus. Nojima himself said that Tifa is the woman Cloud loves and relies on in battle.

Aerith x Zack is how the story was originally written. Aerith is with Zack in the lifestream. It's only logical that they reunite as a couple. She did leave an impression on Cloud's life, but Tifa loves Cloud no matter what, and for reasons that date back to childhood. Even if that is not entirely objective, Tifa's love is far better written. [Ahem, not Mary Sue.] And in any scenario, the dead will always live on in the hearts of those they know. That's not romantic love per-say, but a given.

Things to remember about Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Zack. SPOILERS. . . . . . . . Cloud feel for Aerith during the time in his life when he still thought he was Zack. Cloud thought he was Zack because Tifa's memories of Zack became Cloud's memories. Sephiroth said so and Cloud seemed to believe it to be true. So did Tifa. Aerith didn't seem to love Cloud. She loved Zack and was with Cloud to remember what it was like to be with her first love. This one, though, is a theory because in Case of Lifestream she might be referring to either Cloud or Zack when she says "my beloved". Zack is a fuckin' badass. His love for Aerith was genuine. Aerith's love for him was genuine. They're together forever as spirits that journey the earth through the lifestream

Actually. . . Zack and Aerith did like each other but it was like falling into a sudden crush as stated by Nomura. Cloud loved Aerith, not because of the Zack in him. He fell for her on his own whim. While Aerith fell for the parts that belonged solely to Cloud himself. And she knew the differences between Cloud and Zack thanks to her Cetra powers. Zack and Aerith remain friends in the lifestream, Maiden who travels the planet proves this. SE stated that Cloud was Aerith's koibito and boyfriend. That she loved Cloud much more than her first love. (Which was Zack) Sorry to say but Zack and Aerith weren't really seriously in love like Crisis Core depicts them being. I'm sure their love was genuine, still it was a crush. And there is evidence that Zack got a long with a lot of girls. I intend to agree with Aerith. Zack can't be a true lover, since he got along with tons of girls. . . . He can't be faithful to just one. Perhaps, I could be wrong, despite Zack asking lots of girls out on dates, and such. He can find a girl someday, and she can be his number one in his spirit's life. Zack is a damn badass, can't agree more. ^^ But I like Cloud better. XD. The Cloud and Tifa sex scene was thrown out, and then a different version, where obviously Tifa just rests on Cloud's shoulder and their friends see this. Happened. Since that scene can become good or bad for Tifa, it's optional, so doesn't count towards CloudxTifa. Lots of quotes, I don't feel like looking up at the moment support these damning facts.

Jinjing Hime I consider Crisis Core a much more credible source than "The Maiden who travels the planet" since it's an actual game specifically released to tell the backstory up to the point where FFVII begins. In that game Zack and Aerith are depicted as soulmates judging by how they are connected (when Zack dies Aerith feels it,) and how Zack remembers her even after 5 years in the lab. Also, the end of Advent Children proved that in the lifestream Aerith and Zack are an item, which is what finally put Cloud's mind at ease and allowed him to let them go. In fact, that movie makes a big case of putting Aerith and Zack in the same footing in the way Cloud sees them. Both iconic characters and dear friends who had a huge impact on his life and whose deaths left an impression on him. That puts Aerith way beyond the level of love interest and more in the idol/saint category that Zack's in.

To Me & I Thought That Advent Children Proves That Cloud Has A Complete Platonic Relationship With Everyone In The Game. At The End Of The Post Credits Song Calling When It Shows The Photographs, The First Shows Everyone In A Group As Platonic Friends For Life. because SE keeps stating Aerith is engraved inside Cloud's heart. They share an intimate connection, that makes Tifa still jealous of Aerith. (even though she is dead) Cloud is Aerith's koibito, or lover. Tifa is just a sweetheart, there is no mention of Cloud in that SE quote. Cloud and Tifa share a platonic friendship and they still care for each other. But it's a one sided love on Tifa's part.

I played FF7, read "The maiden who travels the world" - OAWTAS-Case of Tifa, watch AC complete and I believe that even when making ff7 original game's content, SE didnt make things like "A love B, but B love C not A" etc, and they will never ever let us fans stop arguing about that. but cloud perception is a different story. Cloud is not seeing Aerith as cloud but through Zack in his personality. It's sad but this is reality. This is why after Aerith Death he is confused on his next move. Aerith died and 'Zack's love died' that why he is soo sad. When Tifa brings back the 'real cloud'. His love for Tifa still there but the weak cloud is there too and that's the only time he can grieve. explaining reasons for desertion for Advent Children. He's grieving! That's it!

After event on FF7 origin and befor FF7 AC, in Case of Tifa, he truthly wanted to move on and live with Tifa and the kids as a family, but he couldnt do it full-heartly since he still regret so much for Zack and Aeries' dead that he even felt guilty with Tifa for thinking too much about Aeris.

And to follow up, Cloud and Tifa were always close as teens. Seldom does any piece of fiction let that go nowhere. And again with Cloud preferring Tifa, Cloud and her have an actual history. Him and Aerith do not, which ties into her being a typical Mary Sue. She loves the main character simply because he's the main character, she's a summoner/healer, has an "exotic" name, graceful,etc. Her chemistry with Cloud is superficial at best. Go onto next comment...

Tifa shared the feelings mutually with Cloud, so I don't see it that way. Also, Cloud's love for Aerith was based on his time spent with her combined with his fucked up state of mind. Chances are, after spending more time with Tifa, Cloud would [and now does] prefer Tifa. Even if Aerith was alive, Cloud as himself, and not a Zack wannabe would most likely harbor equal feelings for Tifa. Tifa loves Cloud more than Aerith ever did. Aerith's feelings were a bit more superficial. Plus Tifa is hot

I don't know what you're basing your claim on about Tifa sharing the feelings in their teenage years. It seemed to me like she started really falling in love with him only when she met him again as an adult and he agreed to help her terrorist friends. I also don't know what you're basing your claim on that Cloud would prefer Tifa even if Aerith was alive, or Aerith's feelings for him having been more superficial. As for hotness... Aerith is/was quite beautiful too, I think.

Crisis Core. Plus, from a writer's perspective, you can tell they were trying to ship Cloud and Tifa in their teenage years. As for Cloud preferring Tifa, that's based off of a multitude of things. One being circumstance. Cloud fell in love with Aerith because he spent time with her. The same would easily happen with Tifa. Because this is a case on speculation, it's only fair for both sides to have hypothetical. As for Aerith's feelings being superficial, she's a typical "Mary Sue."
