Pretty sure you're not suppose to run any tank on its side.. Doing this allows the propane to leave the bottle in liquid format, dangerous,, and that's why everything froze up.. Tank needs to be upright or on an angle to only allow propane to leave in a gaseous state.

@georgeboring6703
@georgeboring6703 Ай бұрын
@@jonathanconway7256 it won't, but that's not the problem. It freezes things like the regulator. With unregulated propane flowing it will reach the point where the proper fuel to air ratio is met. That could cause a huge area to ignite.

I had similar thoughts about the Tripod Torch the first time I saw it. However, I ended up getting one and have used it on a few camping trips and I love it. 1) Use the legs to connect the hose as they double as spanners 2) Heat output is great especially with being able to use the shields 3) I have had the regulator freeze on my 5lb in cold weather, but found a hand warmer thrown on the regulator prevents this.

@ no problem! Also I dulled all the edges and threw in some cheap gloves in my bag as you are right, the edges can be sharp! This thing saved our late night hangouts while camping in burn bans. It's been a great addition.

Have a lavenox and a tri pod torch. Use the lava box around home while sitting in the driveway or in the garage. Tripod torch works well while trying to save space in my JL

Personal experience with the Ignik is that it is ok, fuel efficent but not quite warm enough. If you have only 5 lb tank and min space that is the one to get. I use it primarily with my Jeep Wrangler since space is super limited. Now if you can do a larger tank and pit then get the 14" square one from Outland and grab a bag. The heat it puts out is better and honestly don't feel it uses that much more propane. It's my favorite pit. Now I have one extra to recommend if you can burn wood or pellets. That is East Oak table top fire pit. It is only 10" tall x 7" wide and will put out a ton of heat. If I can burn wood or pellets that is the one I bring. No ash after you are done and pretty warm for the size!

Throw an adjustable 20 PSI regulator on the old school round pit nd it will rip. Throw in in a big canvas duffle or buy a carry bag and it will be well contained.

I wonder if the small propane cylinder was placed upright so the regulator does not have any liquid entering it, would help alleviate it from freezing?

I have the original LavaBox. Love it! Would have no other. But I have to say there is no way I would have the control on the side of the lava box itself. You will set yourself on fire!. 🤣 Seriously. It's so simple to set the propane tank next to your camp chair and adjust the flame from a safe distance. On another note, a friend who bought an Ignik now wishes they hadn't, once they saw how well the LavaBox kicks out heat. Oh yeah, LavaBox's are made in Colorado, USA by a small locally owned company.

you could have also put the 11 pound tank on a scale and burned a pound off its weight for each test. I run a camco round firepit that has a bag it goes in to keep the rocks from going everywhere. It puts out more heat than the ignik (friend has one) but it has its own set of problems. Also when I keep my tank in the back of my truck I run a 10 foot extension from the tank and then to the regulator / firepit connection hose so even though the regulator is on the end of the 6 foot hose, its only 6 feet away from the pit (16 feet total from the truck).

@Casey250 19 күн бұрын
I tried that, it was very hard to measure. My assumption is that as the liquid turns to gas inside the cylinder, the weight fluctuates until it settles back down again. It was very hard to get a useful measurement that was accurate enough while burning propane report any results.
@chrisward906
@chrisward906 19 күн бұрын
@@Casey250 thats cool. I mean I've never tried that test or anything. I just know when there's 11 pounds of propane in a tank it means there is literally 11 pounds of propane in the tank and burning 1 pound should make it 10 pounds of fuel left. I don't think physics says some amount of vaporized fuel weighs less but what that looks like on a bathroom scale or something you found out.

I have heard that the gas port on the ignik can be drilled out and it will get close to the lavabox with flame height. Obviously not manufacturer recommended All pressurized gas containers cool down when the gas is let out. The little green cans are smaller so they cool down more and freeze up easily

I bought an Outbound brand portable propane fire pit. It's kind of like a generic propane fire, but smaller. It's a rectangle that's like 6 inches tall, and it has legs that fold up and lock on the lid. It's pretty sweet but also pretty mediocre. I bought it to run on green propane bottles. It lasts about an hour on one, and the bottle does freeze up, but it's not that bad if you're not on high. I stay away from high to save fuel anyways. I sometimes wish I bought a lava box or some other ammo can style fire, they seem to have more juice. Ultimately though, I don't really use it that much. In the summer the sun is usually out late, and then the rest of the year I have regular fires. I think it retails for $199 at canadian tire, but if you wait for a sale you can usually save 20-25%. I did a review a couple years ago on my channel.

Propane is liquid and must be allowed to vaporize in the open space at the top of the cylinder before use. Laying the cylinder on its side allows liquid to exit through the regulator and is dangerous. Liquid Propane is extremely cold which is why the regulator froze. This is the same reason you should always travel with your propane tanks in the vertical position so the blow off valves can operate properly in high temperatures. Also, Firebox will not use a quick connection because 20 PSI surpasses the safety standard for the quick connect and can cause a dangerous leak. Cheers.

Pro tip for propane fire pit people: Be nice to the Karens and Chads that will undoubtedly think you are trying to burn down the forest (Note: I’m a propane fire pit person). Pro tip to Karens and Chads: The later it is in the evening is directly proportional to the amount of whiskey consumed. It is also inversely proportional to the amount of patience the whiskeyed up propane person is going to display at your walking into the campsite unannounced. Dear Tim (supposed name of Durango Colorado campground employee); Tell your Chad friend I’m sorry I was such an asshole, and refer him to the above pro tips.

Great you had Gretchen on your channel. She's a real hoot! Cool you did a few options. We started with a Out Land Living firebowl 883, which is 24". Way to big once we started overlanding. We've gone to a DIY Kit from Tacticool Fire Pits which uses a Ammo can when we can't use our Pop-up Fire Pit. By far the cheapest coming in at $69 US not including the ammo can or labor to assemble. Fun project and puts out the highest flame on the market! No eyebrows guaranteed 😂. Thanks for creating such a fun review! 🛻+⛺️=🙂!
