I thought thus Isuzu box truck was going to be a simple tow, but I was very wrong! Between it being blocked in, facing the wrong way, flat tires, powder dirt, and a driveline that was for some reason full of oil, it fought me the whole way.

A steady pull on a hitch ball is fine, it is literally what it was designed to do. The problems occur when so monkey with a strap or dynamic rope decides that hammering on the go petal is the right course of action. Also the bigger the drop the bigger the problem. Shock loading is a thing, and not a very good thing.
@bmxscape

right like if you are sure the object is gonna move it should be no problem but trying to pull out a stump etc you really have no idea if its gonna move or not so dont use the hitch

There’s another risk with a ball, that you don’t get with an eye. The rope is not captive and can ride up off of the ball, particularly when you’re pulling on uneven ground. The risk here was minimal, because the ground was level enough that, if the rope did come off, the truck wasn’t going anywhere and, using Casey’s non-stretch ropes, it wouldn’t catapult and hurt anyone. Further, he uses a remote control winch, so he’s in the cab of the invalid, ready to take control, if need be. He substituted a couple of layers of additional safety, in order to take the shortcut and lose one. Not sure about over there, but in Europe the hitch is required to be able to take shock loading. If the trailer gets involved in an accident, it must not break away from the towing vehicle. You’ll often see safety chains attached at the ball hitch. That wouldn’t be much use if the hitch was separated from the frame, would it? Still not best practice, but often the only way, with European chassis.

Is the weight of the truck not more than the tow ball is rated for? (Would I do it? Hell yea)
@jcar1417
@jcar1417 11 ай бұрын
Class 3 hitch is rated to 6000lb and 10000 lb with weight distribution. So with at least a safety factor of 5 we are talking 30 to 50 thousand pounds. The shank of the ball never breaks, it’s usually the drop of the hitch that breaks. A 4”, 6” 8 “ drop just keeps on adding more and more leverage . You’ll notice that reasonably people don’t end up on you tube with a hitch through their back window, it’s usually someone with limited knowledge, or no common sense or just an idiot or are pressured by an “expert”. A stuck vehicle is not worth anyone’s life.

Back in the 90's I had a box truck simulator size to the npr I had set up for HVAC fabrication and it was heavy. I snapped a u joint in Salem and gerlock towing towed it back to Portland with there little hino #6 known as the grasshopper. My truck was so heavy that truck look like a grasshopper as we would hit bumps and the front end would hop up and down and any attempt to do a quick stop was not going to happen. We had a fleet of tanker trucks and gerlock towing was always there to help when needed. It's nice to know they're still around.

Pulling a steady pull on the ball with nothing more than rolling resistance is perfectly fine. If the box is not over 9' Tall I would have put it on the bed and not worried about the radiator but if it's over 9' Tall the wheel lift is the way to go! That was a REALLY good paying job with all that additional work to get hooked up! Great job!

Thanks, Casey. I know what a pain it is backing into this shop, but once you stepped out and looked for yourself where it needed to go, it went right in. Regarding the drive line leak, I am guessing that there is an o-ring under the pinion nut washer that is leaking. The question is, 'is it worth fixing?' It wasn't even damp from oil leaking out, its clean, so why bother? My only concern is how much leaks out while towing with the driveline disconnected? For those curious, it had overheated (probably because of a leaking radiator that he was going to get around to replacing - one of these days) and cooked the head. We are hoping that is as far as we need to go, but we will see.

Oh, the joys of being a tow truck driver! You get to crawl under trucks and cars in all kinds of conditions, like dusty or gravely ground, snow,slush and backing off the brake pots on air brake systems,and hope you don't die if the bolt is stripped,and come flying into your head! Crawling under trailers that are parked on soft ground, to put a hook around the 5th wheel pin! I did that. There was 3 feet of clearance before the trailer hit bottom! We had a truckers who decided to back off the bolt in his break chamber. When my boss got there,he was unconscious, with the bolt sticking out of his forehead,in his skull ! When my boss asked him why, it was either to save money or time! But I bet he never did that again! He lived, and the hospital pulled the bolt from the break chamber pot out of his forehead and pulled the peice of his skull back in place! Note: the the threads on a brake pot chamber rust out fast cuz they're fine threads . One of the jobs we had ,was a call to an underpass that was not 14 foot clearance and truckers thst thought it was,it was 11,6,kept knocking 20 ton rolls of steel coils of there flatbed so my boss asked me to wrap a chain around it,whike it lay flat on the ground, so he could pick it up! He did one before,it has sprung out on the road,dangerous work at times,and roll backs were unheard of way back then! My boss had the first extendable boom!

Howdy Casey!! You didn't show it, but since you have the air hose fairly handy, wondering if you use it to "blow the talc" off your clothing before you hop in the driver seat .... (that pumice dust raises hell on vehicle seats!!) 🤣🤣 "Could you move it over to the RIGHT a foot or so?" 🤣🤣 I had to watch that one again!! Great job backing that beast into the precise spot in the bay, Casey... Safe travels friend ❤️❤️ Stay FROSTY... Keep your powder dry and your head on a swivel... 🇺🇸🇺🇸WWG1WGA🇺🇸🇺🇸NCSWIC🇺🇸🇺🇸

Show me a 2” tow ball mounted to a proper straight shaft hitch -all in good repair - that has failed while doing an appropriate recovery technique. They only have a bad reputation because the rusted bumper mounted tow ball on JimBobs truck gets used by Cleetus to do a dynamic pull using a chain. Or Jimothy uses a 6” drop down hitch to do a dynamic pull with a flat strap. Or Twyla’s 1-7/8” tow ball is loose and rusted and…. wait for it…..she does a dynamic pull with a chain.

Nice. The oil in the drive pinion is pretty common... oil will weap up the splines on the pinion If it's got some wear or someone didn't put sealant on it when installing it. It's fairly common practice to put a little pipe sealant on the splines.
