it similar to the Chrysler Turbine from the 60s but that had a bespoke automotive turbine engine but it was also driven in a similar fashion. that thing would idle at 20k rpm as well. they built a 250 car test fleet but they crushed them after the test period. they saved 7 cars for museums. Jay leno has one that runs and drives and its the only one in private hands and road worthy.

We have or had one here in St Louis at the transportation museum. I remember seeing it several times when I was a kid and getting really excited. It was some kind of orange color iirc. There was signage saying that it would melt the asphalt under it at a stop light lol.

Wouldn't it be very lossy to convert the thrust from the jet engine into torque through a turbine? My thinking is that converting the energy format is less efficient than using the energy as it is.

Ever think about building (or getting one of your students to build) a FADEC for the engine? At least maybe for the startup sequence. It could easily be done with an Arduino, and could take your startup sequence from motoring engine, switching igniters, switching fuel, watching temps and RPM in case of hot start to "push the button and wait for the green light." Hot starts, insufficient RPM, low fuel pressure, any problems at all really could be automatically and instantly taken care of by the system, much faster than you could react.

I'm sure managing startup is half the fun for someone so technical lol

One thing got my attention with the electrical system. You mentioned two 12v supplies in series for 24v and a tap between the batteries for 12v and the master switch kills the ground (I presume the negative battery lead to chassis ground). If it’s truly wired that way what can happen is when the ground switch is open, current can flow from the 24v terminal through the 24v load to chassis ground and then from chassis ground it will flow in reverse through the negative lead of the 12v load to the positive 12v lead and complete the circuit where your two 12v batteries connect. This can potentially burn things out because you have a small reverse polarity voltage across the 12v load and you also may still have enough current flowing through your 24v load to keep it actively running. Maybe this has been taken into account in your build, but everyone else know that if you are running multiple DC voltages in a build, you cannot just put a single pole switch in on the ground side, for if you do, current will flow from the higher potential supply through loads sharing a common ground to the lower potential supply.

This thing is incredible. I'm really looking forward to part 2. I'm also really curious about how you go about stopping the car since I'm assuming you can't just take a turbine down to idle in a rapid period of time like you can a piston engine...
@batvette2 жыл бұрын
Not sure but a torque converter kinda thing makes that a non problem. Applying the brakes/releasing throttle disengages the engine from applying power to the wheels but allows the engine to do what its doing- ideally, spooling down. If you ever rode an old 60s minibike youd understand the concept. The engine always ran but only engaged the rear wheel when you needed to accelerate. Whether you were stopped or moving already. What youre implying is that the engine output shaft is directly connected to the rear wheels via the transmission but no car with an automatic transmission does that, so in that respect the problem youre implying is no different than in any other car with an AT, its just the turbine operates at much higher rpm. This obviously couldnt work with a manual and clutch drivetrain.
@iamsiin3385 жыл бұрын
Any planned remodeling of the cockpit making the interface simple all turbine parameters on one screen? And upgrading your fire extinguishing system automatically cutoff the fuel supply system, , with just a guarded push botton switch. Basically like how aircraft cockpits are designed. And the start up sequence make it with just 1 master switch on/off and a selector switch to set: 1.crank(no fuel/ignition only compressed air), 2.norm (normal start sequence automatic fuel supply and ignition at N% rpm), 3. Ignition(for manual starting like what you currently have). And with a master switch If your parameters of egt is high you turn it off, fuel supply is automatically shutoff, then set the selector to crank(to blow compressed air from compressor out to exhaust) or Ignition(to blow air and at the same time burn off excess fuel in the chamber). Basically like what procedures for pilots during engine start, hung start, high egt, engine shutdown.
