This looks better than the DW-5600 to me (which I also think looks great). It’s more interesting in its design and I love the color accents. It’s a perfect beater. Definitely NOT ugly. I usually align with your opinions, Jody, but I think you’re way off with this one.

I bought the DW291. They amended some of problems of this DW290: the looks (imo) it's better; the strap is curved like G-shock straps; it has a 10 yrs battery, 5 alarms, 24h timer and chronometer, world time (29 cities) etc...for 40Euros!

Ive had mine for 7 years. The strap softens over time and gets much more comfortable. 20mm perlon straps fit fine on these too

The DW-290 is an awesome watch. It's hex shape is unique. Mine is from the 90s. It has a gold screen with a silver stripe instead of the red one. It's one of my favourite watches of all time.

I just got this and unlike you I love the looks of it. Much cooler than the 5600, and buttons are perfect. The strap is rubbish though as you say, so I replaced it with my Casio WS210H's strap (which now has a nato). Looks great and very comfortable. This is basically as tough as a G-shock, with mineral crystal, 200m WR, el-light. It is the only one with those specs in this price range.

I got this watch in 2004 as an spare watch and it still working, the green paint is gone so is the crappy original band. I don't use it everyday but when the job is messy, this guy rocks

For those that don't like the hard strap,you can put an F91W strap directly on this watch and it is instantly more comfortable.It is an excellent fit to the case and also matches the watch well despite being slimmer.

Unfortunately My younger brother attacked it with scissors and that was the end of that.. found another in tk maxx on sale for £16.99 last year, Bought it instantly. my favourite memorable watch out of the 30+ I own. Have a Casio DW-310. Been with me for over 20 years and change battery maybe 3 times, and gone many a trip overseas, kayaking, hiking what not. It just works. Not sure if Clint Eastwood’s character in Heartbreak Ridge wore one or not.

I think it's a cool looking Casio with a retro 1990's vibe. Even at $40 these days, they are a great buy considering it's specs. While not as robustly built as my DW-5600 or GW-M5610U, it's one that I enjoy owning and like wearing in my watch rotation.

It does have a certain charm, kinda like what you'd see in an 80's or 90's sci-fi flick or video game. Not that I would buy it but I'm not shutting it out either. At $24 I might consider it, but where I live it's going for $40, and at that price, I dunno. Personally though, I'd get the GA-2100. Really nice and takes cues from the Royal Oak. Edit - 3 days later this watch is starting to grow on me. And I suppose it is a bit of an iconic watch that watch people will recognize. And 200M water resistance for $24 is amazing! Oh no!! I already have too many watches!! Must.. control.. urge.. to.. buy.... 🤣

Got to say I actually disagreed with the outcome of this review I actually picked one up for around $22 and had my watch repairer throw on a 20mm rubber dive band and shave it down to 19mm and I think it just looks like a million bucks and I actually ended up really liking the looks of it but changing the band made all the difference

Thanks for the review. Was looking at getting this and your honest review has steered me away from this watch. I'll stick with my G-Shock G-5600UE-1 and get the bull bars for it. See if I can find a nylon/NATO strap for it as it doesn't sit quite right. My Rangeman GW-9400 broke after pulling it apart to fix the triple sensor, anyway beyond repair now. The G-5600UE-1 is nice but a bit small. Considering getting the G-Shock GXW-56-1B positive display or a G-6900 with the bigger buttons.

I just got one of these today. Have been evaluating a gshock g2900 and a dw5600 negative. I prefer the dw290 to the 5600 although the strap is indeed shite. Feels as durable as the gshock though.

I have one that holds sentimental value as it belonged to my grandfather who passed away 2 years ago. I wear it daily.. true not the most pretty to look at but it does the job as a beater just like grandpa used it. :) He actually went diving with it... Me no for sure 🤣

I have absolutely loved my DW290 since the 90's and the only Casio watch I have two of in case I lose one:-)). I have looked on some sites that absolutely hate it but then again they prefer that silly, ugly, weird looking, Casio Royale (why the hell you need a pointless world map and analogue circle, that you can't see and takes up half of the screen, on it I don't know) so no accounting for taste I suppose.
