If he had not had the dispute with the draft, I doubt anyone would have beaten Ali. He was just too fast afoot and with his hands. Also, notice the difference in his build here and then later. He was much thicker later around the chest and shoulders. He was really like a gazelle here. So fast and graceful and smooth. Almost like a welterweight.
@duprez24 жыл бұрын
Yeah his body fat percentage went up as he grew older and his legs were heavier too. He could no longer stick and quickly move out of punching range for 15 rounds as a result.

With Ali's superior jab and able to avoid punches, I think he would have defeated Marciano if both were in their prime. Marciano was 5'10 1/2 with a 68' reach. Ali was 6'3 with a 78' reach. But this is speculation on my part. However I think he would have won.

Daniels looked good at the beginning, a good opponent for Ali, but started to tire and swing wildly in the later rounds, it would seem because he'd been hurt by Ali around the eyes, especially the left one. That's why the fight was stopped.

He had tremendous speed and ability before his time off and return to the ring, but he got hit way too much. Simple hits that a returning more mature Ali would dodge. He may have lost speed, but the later Ali was a better fighter.

I watched this fight live and at the time thought Billy got robbed. In retrospect, I didn't realize what a sharp shooter the young Ali was. The jab and straight right hands were a thing of beauty and pretty much overwhelmed Billy. The thunderous rights that Billy landed was what Don Dunphy (and I) were influenced by, but the vast number of punches landed by Clay was the story, along with what would become his legendary ability to take a punch.

uncjim Wow. You were privileged to see a young Ali. You were at the fight?? Based on the 3 rds shown here I didn’t see Ali’s dominance. Was he clever enough to know that his opponents cut would just get worse, therefore no need to risk anything more?
@uncjim4 жыл бұрын
zmiru No..I saw it on T.V. He was never a big puncher, but wore his opponents down with combinations.
@zmiru4 жыл бұрын
uncjim Agreed. I have been binging on a lot of his early fights in the last weeks. Thats my take away. Ali seemed to be indestructible. And he could just outlast his opponents, allied to his reach, great speed of hands and as you say his combinations. But I have been impressed most of all by Ali’s ability to take any sort of punch or punishment. It’s unreal.

Regardless of what size his opponents were, Ali was never afraid, and he won, the VAST MAJORITY !!, of bouts that he had, spanning 2 Decades, or so, and, even though Howard Cosell, drove me mad at xs, what he said, when Ali turned 50, was 💯 PC CORRECT!!, and true, he said, "no matter what the odds were, u never wavered Mohammad, and, I love u Champ, Happy birthday too u my friend", or, words too that effect folks, The man had a, "computer boxing brain" and I'm 💯 PC certain of that, And, of ALL of the fights he had, ESPECIALLY!!!, the, w,w, televised ones, were , in "my humble opinion" an honor, and a God darned human privilege too watch and too behold, And, of ALL of the fights he fought, at least to me, vs Foreman in Africa, stands out in my mind the most!!, And, I'll never forget my late, and great father, who was, and still is!!, Known by anyone, and everyone, who ever knew Him, in his entire life,as a "wizard", he was a farmer for over 20 yrs, who literally started with the shirt on his back, and became, a millionare, in today's money', until my HEARTLESS "MOTHER", left and, almost broke him,😪, AND, my youngest sister was only 4, and I was 9, with 2 other, elder siblings, but!!, Mum just left, and, dad had too raise us 4 kids!!,😪, So, after he paid out, $200.000, to mum, in 1970!!, +!! $65.000, for half of the value, of the 30 acre's, our home in town was, on, jjjust outside of, our home towns limits, On the best soil, in the district!!, According to the dept of Agriculture, because, he had too sell!!!, his, 3500, acre, Farm, where he grew, 4 state championship wheat crops, in the late 60s!!, but, because he HAD!!!, To sell his farm, he bought us, the 30 acres, in town!!, And, thx too a "crooked lawyer", mum had, whom, dad also paid for his, "services,,", and mums "lawyer",, ALSO, demanded,!!!, Dad, ALSO!!, pay mum 50PC, of, OUR HOME/land, IN TOWN Even though, Dad's lawyer, and the judge!!,said she had, no lawful right too!!, Anyway, dad HAD too buy us kids, thee, or our, house and land, in the town!!, And,he didn't even contest it, as, he just wanted everything "settled, + to get mum out of, his life!!, "Ff .once mum d been finally, FARR MORE!!, Than paid out!!😡, Dad became the Engineer, at the local Abbatoirs,!!🙂 And, if he couldn't repair something, and Anything!!, No one else could fix it either!!, Ff .in 1974, the same yr, color tv!! Became available in the, or our district, and, because Dad promises us a, brand new, color tv!!🙂, He bought the 1st color tv,. That was sold, in the local district!!, ANYWAY!!, When the, "Rumble in the jungle", was getting close, dad invited, 24 friends up too watch the fight,!! As, many of them, didn't even own a black and white tv set!!!, But!!, 45 PPL/visitors turned up!!😳, Too watch the bout!! And, for a man who, it VERRRRY rarely gambled!!, Dad had $500, on Ali, at 6 too 1, just too win!!, the Fight,!!!, And, another $250, at 10 too 1, for the ko!!!!, Hence, he stood too win,$5.500!!!, IfFFF!!, Ali knocked or, tko'd foreman!!!, And, just before the Rumble began, dad's best friend, Said, albeit in jest, "FOR SUCH A BRILLIANT MAN🤔 I'M SURE URE, NOT!!, SO SMART IN WAYS AL!!!😳,BUT!!, DAD SIMPLY REPLIED, "BIG GEORGE, HASN'T EVER FOUGHT ALI YET!!!,🤔 AND, WHEN BIG GEORGE WAS TIRING, IN THE DYING SECONDS OF THE 8TH ROUND,,!!!, Dad yelled out!!!, "HERE HE COMES!!!, THEN, no sooner had dad said exactly that !!😳, and, Ali, just went BANG BANG BANG BANG BBBBANG!!!, AND THEN!!!, Our lounge room erupted!!!🙂 And, every single one of the, or dads visitor's,!!!, Shook Dad's hand!!!, 🙂Even, though, 33 of them .. backed big George!!, Then, dad went down town, too the betting agent!!, AND!!!, Told US all!!!, too wait HERE please!!!???, And he came back,!!!, WITH his $5500 WAD!!, of cash, and the local publican, or Hotelier,, who was setting up a 27 gallon keg!!!, of, ice cold beer!!!, Everyone had A ball!!, And, dad asked everyone too pls raise their beer and wine glasses, and he toasted Ali!!!!, That was 49 yrs ago folk's!!🙂yet, I remember it!!!, like it was last week!!!,🙂 and, not just because he was my wonderful father!!, NO ONE' DESERVED IT MORE THAN DAD DID,!!,🙂 all the best to u All, and your loved ones folks, kind regards, Pete.

He put his gloves up when he was in range - I think the gloves down gave his jab and right a lot more snap. Plusses and minuses. If he didn't have the jaw and chin he did, that wouldn't have worked.

bluekeet I sparred a lot with a golden gloves champion. He was lighter than me but kept his hands up, elbows in and chin down. He didn’t lie on the ropes but moved around. I hit him but on his gloves, arms and elbows. There was almost no opening to go for except kidneys which I tried once in a while. Lol In the meantime he’d hit me with jabs and sometimes hooks, right hands and uppercuts. He was a lightweight and I hit harder if I ever hit him but his punches would sting.
