The part about this scene that gets me emotional is how the friend is there just listening to him talk. He doesn't say anything, he just listens to him. He lets him talk and vent and cry. You can tell that Chuck just showed up unannounced. It looks like his friend is in pajamas. But none of that matters. He knows that Chuck needs him. That, to me, is so moving. That is a real friend.

Hardly... You should watch the movie again, it's about a man who is stranded on an island by an act of god for 4 years, and learns nothing from it. A neoliberal corporate drone who berated and abused his subordinates, so he could ride the gravy train while pretending he's helping the greater good (because 'adoption papers must go across the world in less than 87 hours or the universe will implode' lol). Calm down mailman, you're FEDEX, not a helicopter pilot delivering a heart to a transplant patient waiting at the hospital. God punished you for your insolence, and instead of learning to become a better person and treat all people better (not just your loved ones), you came out of this experience thinking "life wanted me to go on because who knows what the tide would bring"?!? Incorrigible idiot, a product of a greedy-foul system that's destroying our planet for profit. P.s: shit talking aside, Tom Hanks is a gifted actor, brought his A-game to this movie.

Every line in this monologue holds so much meaning. Even the line "I have ice in my glass" can jolt into your brain that he's been on an island and the invention of ice (especially in the tropics) wouldn't come to fruition in millennia, and to acknowledge how fortunate you are to possess it for something so trivial: A beverage. It was hard. Covid made it harder. But we held our little family together. We quoted this scene to each other on hard days. During the hardest moments of that chapter it was "gotta keep breathing". Now that we have bounced back mentally and financially, it is more of "who knows what the tide may bring". Don't give up if you are in a dark part of your life. The sun will rise. 💙

When my dad passed away I was devastated beyond articulation. I wept nearly every single day for an entire 6 months until I was given my little daughter. She was wailing in my arms as babies do and all that pain subsided. As she grew I endured a daily conflict of being heart-broken and deliriously happy at this wonderful little being nestled in my arms. Over time I came to realize that I was living for her and not through the loss of my father. The tide came in and brought me wonder and delight. Time truly does heal all wounds.
@mikrokozm92 жыл бұрын
You may perceive that you are living FOR your daughter. But like you & YOUR father, your daughter is really living for YOU...until you pass, and she must grieve until she finds meaning & purpose in HER life. So, no...you aren't really living FOR her. You are really just a tough emotional speedbump in HER life & an educational tool that can help her learn. You will be a tragic end to a triumphant beginning for her, and she'll honour you for it, as you do your father. You just remember how bad your death will be for her, and how badly you want her suffering to end & lead to understandings such as these did for Chuck. That ought to temporarily solve any major existential dilemmas you may have & help her. (I do the same...and it does.) There is no sweet. Just bittersweet. It's not depressing. It's bringing you down to earth. Like it did for Chuck.

Regardless of your circumstances. Be it suffering with mental illness, drug addiction, loss of loved ones or being stuck in a survival situation this scene has the most important truth for all of those events. “Gotta keep breathing. Because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide will bring”. Just keep breathing. I’ve been to some dark places and this simple line kept me going. In a way we’re all stranded on an island with no reason to hope but we don’t know what tomorrow will bring. So all we can do is keep breathing. As corny as this may be this scene is genuinely beautiful and has the greatest advice for life. I’m so grateful that I saw this when it came out and when I was young enough to really take this message in because it saved me from some nasty stuff.

What a great scene.. this is really an allegory we could all use for difficult situations in our lives. Such irony when he said he is grateful because Kelly was with him on the island. It was the hope of being with her again that kept him going when the future reality was that she moved on. We all need to keep breathing, who knows what the tide tomorrow can bring :)

This scene always drives me to tears! It has been so helpful to me in times when I've lost people or felt hopeless! Oh my god, words can simply not explain what it does to me and the hope it gives me! Even i good times, it makes me feel that I can live without anyone and that I can always bounce back from any situation. Thanks Tom, you're such a star!

Tomorrow the sun will rise and who knows what the tide will bring. I saw this movie when I was a kid and now about 20 something years later I watched it again. This line hit me in a way that I haven’t felt before. Even if you lose the thing you love the most tomorrow the sun will rise, who knows what the tide will bring. Might be nothing but hope is important to hold onto even if it life never bears any fruit.

"We both had done the math. Kelly added it all up, knew she had to let me go. I added it up, knew that I had lost her. Cause I was never going to get off that island. I was going to die there, totally alone. I mean I was going to get sick, or get injured or something. The only choice I had, the only thing I could control was when, and how, and where that was going to happen. So I made a rope and I went up to the summit, to hang myself. I had to test it, you know? Of course. You know me. And the weight of the log, snapped the limb of the tree, so I couldn’t even kill myself the way I wanted to. I had power over nothing. That’s when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket. I knew, somehow, that I had to stay alive. Somehow. I had to keep breathing. Even though there was no reason to hope. And all my logic said that I would never see this place again. So that’s what I did. I stayed alive. I kept breathing. And one day that logic was proven all wrong because the tide came in and gave me a sail. And now, here I am. I’m back. In Memphis, talking to you. I have ice in my glass. And I’ve lost her all over again. I’m so sad that I don’t have Kelly. But I’m so grateful that she was with me on that island. And I know what I have to do now. I got to keep breathing, because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide could bring?"

What I'm also getting out of this is Chuck was working non stop. Never around for his Family and Friends when they needed him. When he almost died and got stranded for 4 years on an Island. It made him realize how much life was worth more than over working. For him to have a true friend who loved him. It was a difficult decision to let the woman he loved go, but it was a step for him to move forward!

I had a perfect relationship, all a man could ever want. Great girl with a smile of an angel and heart like none other. Was in relationship with her for 4 years. And months before it came crashing down I experienced something traumatic and had been suffering from depression ever since. I would try my best to get to her but I couldnt deal with the distance of travel. She would come ocassionally for months and then when I almost reached the point of recovery when I could get to go trough 90% of that road to reach her, she gave up on me and left me. The ending of this video makes me cry cause I feel the same way. Yes I have lost her , but in the depth of the depression I am thankful I had sometimes her company or sometimes just her image.

This got me thinking about my older sister who I lost one week after we celebrate our birthday together. She was born on the 13 and I was born on the 14 but 9 years apart so we always celebrate our birthdays together. Our last birthday trip we spent it with her daughters, my nieces. It was a pricey trip at the time, I thought this will take a hit on my savings but we had a great time. The next week she passed away but just like he said "I'm sad I don't have her, but I'm very grateful she was with me."

I've been alone without love for many years, trying to pick myself up and keep breathing and i managed to get thru each day Then i met this new girl, amazing girl. She showed me love again and made me dream, talked about the future. I was so happy.. Then she told me she has a boyfriend she loves She left me in the morning after sleeping over at my place with that knowledge just a day ago and went back to him without any closure Now i feel more alone then ever, my hearth is in pieces. All i know is that i have to keep breathing even tho my tears are falling

Memento Just because you’re watching this scene I know you have a good heart. Man I’ve been single and looking for love for over 10 years. Appreciate being alone, learn to love it. I KNOW it’s hard, but we can’t control others. Much love man.

I know what that feels like. But i know in all your pain it also teached you something. This ex boyfriend could not have been unknown too you. But your not to blame all i can say is that you have to be more carefull in future decisions if ever. Dont ever go for a girl who has unfinished business with her ex even tho it's been three months or longer. Especially when they always might have been soulmatey close. Pussy like that will only take another man too try and get over her own pain ultimately hurting the person she was with at that time. I cant blame you its tempting but through this lesson that future temptation is gone. Find a woman that knows what she wants. You'll be allright keep that chin up take care my friend.

Bruce Rylan I always get the feeling when I see or talk to a pretty girl / try to befriend one that she’s already seeing someone, that I’m not good enough, not cute enough, not this or that enough. I have so much self doubt and doubt in any relationship ever that it’s a constant cycle of pain and heartbreak to the point of suicidal thoughts because I don’t think I’ll ever find love . True love inside and out with her. Can’t stop watching this scene in late .

CJ brother your being to hard on yourself. You see you are a person too and you have to start loving yourself one way or another. If only a girl can make you happy? Thats not good my friend cause the only one you need is you to be happy. Find self respect! a girl isnt the key in making you happy! Only you can do that. Your life matters you need to try and find some balance. Im not gonna give you BS that you’ll find your true love. But love one day you will find. Confidence is key. Do what makes you happy first a women in your life isnt key happiness. But if your life is solid and you know what you want things will get easier for you. And they will notice you my friend. God bless

Awesome, simple and very effective way this scene was shot. Traditionally you'd probably have a static shot of Chuck with one cut back to his friend to show his reaction and establish he's there, then maybe a push into Chuck's face as he's saying the rest of the monolog. But his friend's reaction isn't important, just that brief glimpse of his presence, the sight of the pajamas, the towel around his neck establishes so much visually. We get it all in one go with one simple camera movement.

I couldn't say I lost you, because I never really had you, you just passed by my life like a shooting star. Every passing second you are in my mind, lost in those brief moments you shared with me. It's so silly and infantile feeling like this, but also the most profound experience I ever had. How not to feel everything is absolutely pointless, how to come back from absolute ecstasy? I just keep breathing.

I just got out of a 2 year relationship. She had been my bestfriend for 12 years and we dated seriously for the last two. The break up was pretty abrupt and wasnt really caused by anything imparticular (at least from my point of view). She had been battling depression for the better part of a year and I did absolutely everything in my power to try to heal her and to try to keep our relationship going. She had constant mental breakdowns, and i'd drop everything in a minute to be there with her. Endless nights of her just crying in my arms while i tried to comfort her. At the time i was also going through the worst peeiod of my life. I was fighting a pretty nasty drug and alcohol addiction that had taken over my life, but i never let it bleed over into my relationship with her. I knew I had to be her rock. At times she would intentionally bitch slap me while i was trying to help and she even cheated on me at one point. To an extent I knew it wasnt her, I knew she was really going through it. But i just had to keep breathing. I had to be there or her, and i had to give her all of the unconditional affection and love that she needed. About two weeks ago she broke it off. The argument was about a lie that she made up but somehow she turned the argument on me. On pen and paper, she ended the relationship nicely and never did anything to directly hurt me, but she did some major psychological damage to me over the years. When she broke it off, i thought the world was going to come to an end. She played the biggest role in my entire life, and it was all over. I tried my best and did everything right in the relationship and I still lost her. I had power over nothing. Thats when this feeling came over me like a warm blanket ( my mind went directly to this scene in the movie). I knew how I'd carry on. Id just keep breathing. Over those two years I realized that I never rwally depended on her for anything. She didnt get me through that period of my life. I truly just had myself. It made me think of how Kelly wasnt truly with Chuck on that island, but in the end he knew he didnt need her to keep going. He had himself. Just watching this scene makes me grateful for the past that I had with her, but excited for the future. Tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the tide will bring?
