I am 68 yrs old and been fishing since I was 8 when my dad took me on his 24’ Chris Craft to Catalina Island in SoCal (Southern California) for Bluefin Tuna. I was hooked by the size of fish caught and the adventure of offshore fishing. Fishing in a body of water knowing that at best the fish will weigh 5-10# was not inspiring. I retired 10 yrs. ago from San Diego and moved with my wife to mainland Mexico where I’ve been throwing big poppers, buzz bombs, and heavy jigs for Roosterfish, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Yellowtail and Dorado from a kayak or boat. Name of the game is distance, get the jig asap on the birds/boil. No spinning gear here. We have recently moved back to the states to become grandparents. My wife asked where do you want to live? Well California was a non starter and I have a bucket list of fish I have never caught being a westcoast fishermen. I said Florida. I have never caught a Redfish, Speckled trout, Cobia, Tarpon etc. one little problem is my gear is for offshore. My wife rolled her eyes when I explained that I had to buy a new arsenal of rods and reels. So a new Piscifun Torrent casting reel and 7’6” Torrent mhf rod arrived yesterday (better gear later), and I took my knowledge and loaded it up with 30# braid, 1/8th jighead with soft plastic, set the tension and number 5 on the magnetic brake and let her rip! POW! My educated thumb failed. The cast went all of 10 yards and I had to de-spool the braid and throw it away. This old dog needs to learn some new tricks. Cleaned up the gear and came into the house and put on KZbin looking for tutorials on the do’s and don’ts of Baitcasters. Found your site and will practice until I get it right. Your video’s were great and easily understood. More like this would be great. Thanks again....tight lines

Sounds fun but I'm the other way lol. I have absolutely no interest in saltwater fishing lol. All I want to do is go after bass, walleyes, trout and and other freshwater fish. Maybe it has to do with where we are raised. You being from California are more prone to ocean fishing and ne being from the mountains of West Virginia I'm more prone to freshwater rivers amd lakes. I have saltwater fished on vacation a few times and it was fun. But it didnt come close to freshwater for me

I just re-watched this video and found a whole new appreciation for it. I've been having baitcasting issues lately, and it seems that I have just sort of forgotten the fundamentals. It is good to go back and remind yourself from time to time how to do things the RIGHT way, as over time your bad habits just seem to get entrenched. At least that is true for me. This is a really excellent instructional video. If I could give this a second like, I would!

Thank you soooo much for being VERY thorough but MOST OF ALL for instructing us in what to do in the event of the start of an overrun or backlash and distinguishing at what point of the cast is controlled by what part of the reel! There are tons of "how to learn a baitcaster" type vids out there but yours is one of the very few that actually tell us "how to fix this if this starts to happen in the ____ of the cast". Excellent job! Thank you for paying attention to what others apparently didn't!

I used to get so frustrated fluke fishing, I love to fish a fluke in the fall. Just doesn't doesnt don't justice with a keel weighted hook. I always thought the flukes we're harder to throw weightless then a stick bait even. For the longest time I was just making short casts or skipping with a spinning reel, sucked...was a disaster lol As time went on I found for me anyways ..a medium heavy FAST action ,helped me so much, I figured out a longer rod 7'3 instead of 7'0. nowadays I don't think I use under a 7-3 for anything. Debo you the man! Just arent any other KZbinrs that are as elaborate as you, very few. Your presentation, the close ups...it's just art man! Thanks for your hard work!

WOW! Fantastic instructional. This could be one of your best videos. I’m really going to try all of these modifications. The light spool with smaller diameter line with slack in the line with a heavier wire hook seems like common sense yet I really didn’t even think too much about it. The “tennis racket” and “dart throwing”technique are excellent memory cues to keep in mind that I’m definitely going to try. Thank you for sharing this info and for making such an intricate procedure a little more simplistic.

They have a centrifugal brake too with interchangeable "brake pads" and even came with a leather case, brake shoes (pads) and a combo wrench/screwdriver. For their era they were fairly pricey but made to last forever. Today's reels can't compare to the quality and long life.

Another thing about casting weightless baits is the shape of the bait also effects how the bait cast as well. A bait that's slim is much more aerodynamic than a bulky bait, which cast much smoother and farther.

Wondering if you only use right hand reels? I converted over to left hand versions so that I am not having to keep switching the rod back and forth between my left and right during the cast and reeling process. Making practice cast, I see they definitely have different characteristics (line memory and all). I also find I have to use more spool tension on my Stealth, maybe due to the light spool. Have you done a video on lowering line memory in fluorocarbons and copolymers, such as with line conditioners and prestretching?

Thanks for the info. I had been looking at the BFS reels for casting light lures but this was good to know before I bought one. I noticed you don’t mention the kastking products much in your recent videos. Any particular reason? I use their reels quite a lot.

I spooled it with 8 LB test mono for lighter lures, gave it some practice casts and found that it did cast well kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e , except that the anti-backlash setting had to be turned up almost all of the way to keep the "overcasts' ' down. I disassembled it, and found that if I potted some "shim washers" behind that anti-backlash magnet assembly, it got the magnets closer to the spool without rubbing, and I could get better control with about a 6 to 7 out out 10-Max setting. I also noticed that the handle shaft had some internal end play, maybe only 2 or 3 thousands of an inch, but it's still noticeable. If the anti-backlash and shaft tolerances were "tightened up" this would be a fantastic value. I've only used it for 4 days of fishing in a month's time, but I plan on keeping it.

Great tips. I want to get my first baitcaster and was wondering if it matters what side the spinning handle should be on? . Like when I guide the line with my thumb. I'm right handed
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын
Gene Villarreal no man, it's all personal preference. If you use your right thumb to press the thumbar and cast, it's more efficient with the handle on the left because you don't have to switch hands. But it's really what you're comfortable with!

I have numerous baitcasters, all the way from the starter ones to a professional type one. My most temperamental one is my Daiwa Tatula. Have you ever used this reel? I have had to respool it 3 x's now.

I'm thinking of buying a bait casting set up. I have used one before and the one major drawback for me is how the lure flies to the target. It comes swinging in either from the side or top depending on the throw. Why I hate it it because it makes it impossible to shoot a lure next to a structure and under overhanging brush. You can't shoot it straight like you can with a spinning reel. The way it swings around makes a straight shot impossible. I think if I buy my own and put in some time and practice maybe I can figure out how to shoot a straight shot.
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын
DA7545 thanks for watching brother! I'm decent at pitching and HORRIBLE at shooting a spinning reel lol. You can pitch/skip baits under brush and docks with a a baitcaster with practice. Took me a while but I'm getting decent at it. I prefer a baitcaster because you can thumb the spool for VERY SUBTLE presentations. Just depends in what you practice with and feel comfortable with brother!

Hey mate, I’ve just moved to the country in Australia, I’m used to salt water fishing, extremely new to fresh water fishing, I’ve just bought quite a few hard rattle lures, some spoon and crank lures, with my rattle lures would you suggest I setup a Carolina rig? I’ve thought about putting split shots a foot or two above the lures, any suggestions or ideas for the hard lures and cranks? I’ve got quite a few rubber and stink baits as well with weighted hooks

I was just givin an Abu Garcia Blue Max combo from Walmart I believe it's a $65 combo; have you used one of these and what do you think? I have not used it yet but I have used similar priced reels as well as obnoxiously priced reels. I'm not very good with a baitcaster no matter the price point but would this be worth me keeping just to have an extra tool in my toolbox or should I sell it and buy a spinner that I'm more familiar with?

Another good video man! What power/tips would you recommend in the kast king rods for thrower lighter lures? I have a royal legend on a Lew's pole, and it does okay, but a lot of the areas I fish have a lot of water to cover and the distance leaves some to be desired when it comes to locating the fish.
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын
Texan1048 I'm personally LOVING this rod. It's a 7'1" MH Perigee II Rod. If you're trying to increase casting distance, there are a few things you can change up. What size hook, line, and lure are you using? Also, what size and power/action rod are you using now?
@Texan10486 жыл бұрын
I have a 7' a Lew's TP1 topwater/plastics rod in medium power that works okay for bassing, but doesn't have much flex in the tip. It''s more for inshore use. It's supposedly rated for 1/16-3/4 oz but it only throws well at 1/2 oz or higher with a lot of leader. Best performance is definitely at 3/4 oz. I just cannot throw weightless with it farther than about 10-15' to save my life lol. I''ve been looking at rods in stores but I haven't seen many with a nice tip that I think would work. Naturally, there are no Kast Kings to look at in any store around here. I run a 20lb spiderwire stealth braid on it. I never use mono, copolymer or fluorocarbon on it as a mainline Hook sizes I use range from 1/0-5/0 worm hooks to 2/0-6/0 circle hooks. Fluorocarbon leader, 10-15 lb.
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын
Texan1048 ok, I think there could be a few things that will help. Though it's a medium power rod, it's still got a fast or extra fast tip. If you can find one with more of a moderate fast tip, it will help! 20# Stealth braid is good, try using a 4/0 heavy wire hook. The reel can also make a big difference. Leave a little more line out than normal when you cast. Hope this helps my friend!
@Texan10486 жыл бұрын
Right, it is a fast action, forgot to specify that. Also it's 6'9", I was mistaking the length with another rod. I've tried letting out 2' + of line when I cast, but I think I actually lose distance (definitely accuracy) when I do that. Also, I currently have a royale legend on it. I think I'll end up getting one of these Perigee IIs, unless I find something I think will work better.vJust not sure exactly what rating to get if I decide on the Perigee.
@DEBOSFishing6 жыл бұрын
Texan1048 yea that's a pretty short rod. You'll gain casting distance with a longer rod. I would go with the 7'1" M or MH. The medium is rated up to 5/8 oz lures and the MH goes up to 1 oz. The Royale Legend still throws weightless stick baits well. A longer rod with a softer tip will help a lot. I personally like to go with a heavier rod and hook. If you go with the medium rod, remember to go to a lighter wire hook - 3/0 would be good.
