“That’s the END of the policy!” was such a great delivery of this wishful thought, lol! Academic rambling of a know-it-all below. Press read more at your own risk; there is no joke... okay, maybe there is ONE OR TWO jokes... As an education graduate student, I have the understanding that while teachers and counselors can do a lot to help properly socialize children, the ultimate responsibility lies with parents, and THEIR parenting decisions can fuck kids up to the point where they are natural tyrants and assholes. So much of a child’s social conception of the world is found in family, not peers. If proper social manners are not modeled by parents and other family members, be they dysfunctional or outright abusive, this negatively effects the child’s ability to develop appropriate social skills at school or in play. It becomes a death spiral into chronic and permanent ineptitude, as initial failures in socializing leads to isolation rather quickly among young peers, which yields EVEN FEWER opportunities to learn or improve. Whereas other learning situations are naturally going to involve failures that one must iteratively overcome, recovery and improvement in social skill development is a far more urgent yet simultaneously uncertain matter than most domains of learning because the outcomes depend on the whims of other people rather than ONLY the persistence and adaptation of the learner. This means you can get punished for trying further, and then you end up discouraged from trying at all. In the pursuit of social skills, prospects of accomplishment and positive reinforcement can become entirely outside the learner’s control; that’s what makes it hard, and that’s why so many assholes and socially awkward dorks exist. “Nature” occassionally plays into it, but much more can be explained and overruled by “nurture”. There are people with that “warrior gene” that determines some of the most violent psychopaths who were still raised properly and became fully functional and beloved adults. Living in developmentally devestating social environments as a dysfunctional/abusive home without an example of a better one means that children normalize what they experience, and that normalization will extend to their conception of all social realities. If violence and yelling works at home with adults, it will work at school with teachers and children. The “punch their lights out” solution COULD be impressionable, but it likely would only play into a fear-based morality that may dissapate the moment the child feels invincible and stronger than everything in the room again (i.e. adolescence). For others, it will just make school like home, and the child may simply attempt to escape it all, one way or another (please DO read into the ominous nature of the sentence that I just typed). I might defer to Pat’s psychology degree with his suggestion that it WOULD stop bullying in the immediate sense, though. If a child observes such violent accountability for starting shit, they may think twice about starting shit [where the teachers can see/find them]. In summary, “Sure You Can”-style teaching is a stopgap, and one fraught with community red tape... because, obviously, you are proposing that, by the authority of being a teacher, you have the legal warrant to injure to an ambiguous (and, therefore, possibly fatal) degree someone’s kid, who has entrusted their learning and well-being to the institution you work for in exchange for their local/federal taxes. That one’s probably not making it through the legislature. People (other than PunchMom) tend to be poor sports about having their child murdered in any circumstance.

it would traumatize the "good" kids. also the power to hit kids would be abused immediately, even if they only get one. teachers themselves are often the bullies. not saying all this because i think you dont know (ofcourse you know) just to elaborate on why this is a terrible idea.
@williamzou88334 жыл бұрын
This whole "anti-bully" BS is getting tiresome(not sure about everyone else, but I dreaded going to the auditorium to listen to some nimrods babbling about "bullying" back in HS). How do you define "bullying"? Physical or mental abuse? Should we penalize boys' natural competitiveness and girls' loquacious tendency? If I were to constanly butt heads with you or say something you don't like/hate, is that "bullying"? Is browbeating someone into conforming to the whole anti-bullying message "bullying"? Who gets to police others what "bullying" is? BTW, those nimrods always end their speech with treating others with respect. Treating others with decency/respect? Well, we're still doing business with the Chinese/Saudis/etc. Aren't we? Are kids suppose to see the world as this wonderful la-la land that everything is peaceful and your future boss/friend/spouse will definitely NOT fuck you over whatsoever?
