Ironically, Castlevania 1 wasn't a Metroidvania. The first Metroidvania in the Castlevania franchise was Castlevania 2, Simon's Quest. The thing about games today vs games of my child hood is as a kid I would spend hours testing every area with every item spell or upgrade I had gotten and I am a product of video game progression where today I want to be told where to go next and what to with what I just got and that is why Metroid Dread is such a throw back for me for a change I had to struggle like I was a kid again. Even massive open world games like Skyrim has a very straight forward campaign it’s the side missions that take forever and those were a small if not absent part of the nes snes master system and sega genesis era. Once ps1 and N64 hit the scene was a mass of games that held your hand and gave you more than you needed to no to beat it. But then again it is all part of the era. Today Metroid 1 would never sell because it’s an 90 min game because of the internet as a kid I spent a year unlocking its secrets.

@@0TTERBRO Those were fairly basic obstacles back in the day. It's mostly alright so long as those obstacles aren't cranked too hard and enemies usually can't get you when you climb the stairs, but that's situational. I've played Castlevania Chronicles recently and that's where it got extremely difficult with precise platforming and deadly obstacles that are really difficult to avoid. Enemies are also carefully placed in that game just to mess with you and some of the stages have really horrible sections. And to top it all off, enemies constantly follow you when you are on the stairs. I had a moment where I was just trying to climb a short height of stairs and enemies absolutely swarmed me and there was no way to avoid the damage from them. There is even a section with several skeletons jumping between the platforms high up and throwing bones at you while you are forced to climb a long flight of stairs just to reach where they stand and get a chance to hit them.

I can beat most Castlevania games deathless/continueless no problem, but with Chronicles I can only get to Level 8 without using a continue in original mode, it's that difficult.
