@@paulmoore5392 well TRUE in the regard in which you're speaking of, but just like the arcade gameplay focus of the time, games that were needlessly difficult was a necessity, as that increased the playtime to keep people unaware that they paid X dollars for usually 45 mins of fun. nowadays we can create games that can provide over 100 HOURS of entertainment, so as a result games arent really made to be as hard as games back then.

Ironically, Castlevania 1 wasn't a Metroidvania. The first Metroidvania in the Castlevania franchise was Castlevania 2, Simon's Quest. Then it went back to CV1 style again, more or less, until it re-joined the Metroidvania genre with Symphony of the Night. This is probably why the only NES Castlevania I still enjoy is CV2. The others were a different genre.

Played Bloodlines for the first time and wow it's easily in my top 10 Castlevania games. Super Castlevania IV has a special place in my heart because its the first Castlevania game I ever played. The 2 entries CV64 and Legacy of Darkness are some of my favorite games.

I'm currently playing both Simon's Quest and Rondo of Blood and boy howdy are they tough. Even though they aren't Castlevania games, the Bloodstained games are a blast as well as they are a nice nod to the games they are clearly inspired by. I'm planning on continuing my journey by grabbing hold of every Castlevania I can find, whether they're great or awful. I'm already in love with the series and I have lots of Castlevania to sink my own teeth into for quite awhile.

The thing about games today vs games of my child hood is as a kid I would spend hours testing every area with every item spell or upgrade I had gotten and I am a product of video game progression where today I want to be told where to go next and what to with what I just got and that is why Metroid Dread is such a throw back for me for a change I had to struggle like I was a kid again. Even massive open world games like Skyrim has a very straight forward campaign it’s the side missions that take forever and those were a small if not absent part of the nes snes master system and sega genesis era. Once ps1 and N64 hit the scene was a mass of games that held your hand and gave you more than you needed to no to beat it. But then again it is all part of the era. Today Metroid 1 would never sell because it’s an 90 min game because of the internet as a kid I spent a year unlocking its secrets.

@@0TTERBRO Those were fairly basic obstacles back in the day. It's mostly alright so long as those obstacles aren't cranked too hard and enemies usually can't get you when you climb the stairs, but that's situational. I've played Castlevania Chronicles recently and that's where it got extremely difficult with precise platforming and deadly obstacles that are really difficult to avoid. Enemies are also carefully placed in that game just to mess with you and some of the stages have really horrible sections. And to top it all off, enemies constantly follow you when you are on the stairs. I had a moment where I was just trying to climb a short height of stairs and enemies absolutely swarmed me and there was no way to avoid the damage from them. There is even a section with several skeletons jumping between the platforms high up and throwing bones at you while you are forced to climb a long flight of stairs just to reach where they stand and get a chance to hit them.

@@superplayerex2431 Yeah lmao, I love Castlevania Chronicles (especially original mode) but honestly the game just starts being an asshole to you exactly on Level 5, it just turns into trial and error at its worst, plus the worst boss in the entire series, period, then you've got Level 6 and its Tower of Dolls, such small targets that move towards you... combined with stairs, Level 7 is pretty tame, 'till you get to Level 8 and you get to the fire hallway and that very precise jump at the bat bridge, followed by kung fu maids (way more annoying than Aria of Sorrow's) and annoying as all hell black panthers on top of that. I can beat most Castlevania games deathless/continueless no problem, but with Chronicles I can only get to Level 8 without using a continue in original mode, it's that difficult.

should watch his channel, his Flea Market Madness series is a popular one and he does retro game reviews, sort of AVGN styled.

I see a lot of people who complain about Medusa Heads, but I never found 'em that bad??? they always have a set pattern, if you really want to see how bad Medusas can get, play through Castlevania 3's (US) hard mode, Skull Heads are pretty much Medusas but with erratic patterns, and they aren't fun at all.
