I keep a rubbery handled screwdriver out, I wind a few turns on it to tighten, leaving the sinew on its original roll..it’s an extra step, but makes it easier to tighten and the rest of the sinew doesn’t get compressed.
@johncspine27874 жыл бұрын
Maybe the fine string of sinew..
@CasualCollisions4 жыл бұрын
I'm not much of an "extra step" kind of guy. I'll happily toss a roll with 1/4 of the sinew left that's collapsed versus adding extra steps. :)

Hi casual collisins im from indonesia . i have one question . What liquid for mixing the colour powder . Is that soda ash liquid ? Or just water ? Because my tie dye's is so faded after i rinse it
@CasualCollisions4 жыл бұрын
The fabric is soaked in soda ash prior to being dyed. The liquid dye is Procion Fiber Reactive dye powder mixed with chlorine-free water.

Love your videos and can't wait to try out some more complex patterns. Have you ever done shirts with a different pattern on the back then the front? I'm trying to figure that out. I've seen shirts with something similar to the bifurcated spine on the back and a mandala on the front. Thanks again for your tutorials!
@CasualCollisions7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have. A couple of different "combo" shirts are on the production list that include a lotus/mandala/other design on the front with different design on the back. There may not be enough material to work with on a t-shirt to do the bifurcated spine in a combo design; but, I'll see what I can do.

I’m sure thinner fabric will make it easier and a thinner marker too. What is your reasoning for using sinew or rubber bands? I understand sinew gets tighter and rubber bands have a finite length, but there seems to be more to it than that.
@CasualCollisions3 жыл бұрын
Generally, if you don't want white lines in the result, use rubber bands and if you do want white lines, use sinew pulled tight. You *can* use rubber bands to get lines; but, you have to pull them very tight; and, personally, it's just easier and faster for me to use sinew. You can also have no lines showing when using sinew - simply by not pulling the sinew as tight. There's also a bit of whatever I feel like using to tie with at the time... I usually use sinew for anything that isn't a spiral or scrunch.
@bconsilio37643 жыл бұрын
@@CasualCollisions thank you! You respond quickly and are kind to share your information. Another unrelated question: what do you mean when you say the dye has been thickened?
@CasualCollisions3 жыл бұрын
@@bconsilio3764 - You mix a thickening agent with the dye so that the dye doesn't move as far through the fabric. Most people use sodium alginate; but, I use guar gum as it's readily available in the caning aisle in most grocery stores and it's less expensive. When you say “been soaked in soda ash for at least 20 mins in this case a month” do you mean you soaked the fabric in soda ash for a whole month? Thanks!
@CasualCollisions6 жыл бұрын
You need to soak the fabric in a soda ash solution for at least 20 minutes. In some cases, the material I use has been soaking in solution for days/weeks/months; but, that's because I use large buckets of soda ash and the material at the bottom tends to sit in solution for a while before I get down to it as I just pile new material on top and use it as I pull it out. So, I use a "last in, first out" method versus "first in, first out".
@Matty060015 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't that deteriorate the material?? I've heard of large warnings, no more than an hour, or you'll DIE. But I guess not after all. And we should be so "off", just beautiful.

What do you wash the fabric with at the end?
@CasualCollisions7 жыл бұрын
The washout in the sink is just cold running water followed by hot running water. After the washout in the sink, you move the dyed items to the washing machine and run a regular hot water cycle with an extra rinse using whatever detergent you prefer. With a single cycle in my machine, it's safe for me to play the dyed items in with regular clothes from that point on; however, if it's your first time, I'd recommend you soak the shirt and see if you can wring any dye out after the washing machine cycle -- if you can, you'll need to run it through another hot water cycle.
@paulac92957 жыл бұрын
Why do you just use the powder? Do you find that in the end you have the same results as with using bottles of dye and water? Don't you waste the powder? Love your videos!
@CasualCollisions7 жыл бұрын
No, the results with powder vs liquid dye are completely different. Using powder allows the component colors in the dye to separate leading to a more organic final result than that of using a liquid dye. While it does use substantially more dye for a shirt than using liquid dye, I don't view it as a waste, since that's the only method to produce the look I'm shooting for. (Though, most would argue that I use *way* too much powder for the designs I make. But, when your goal is to have a final design with little-to-no white remaining, I tend to err on the side of abundance since powdered dye is cheap.)

How easy is this to do on a T-shirt, or sweat shirt?
@CasualCollisions6 жыл бұрын
It's a bit more difficult due to the extra material. It's a good idea to practice on a flat piece of fabric before switching to a t-shirt. A sweat shirt is quite a bit more difficult due to the thickness of the material.
