Question; and your video is great by the way- it is not a just add water type of tutotorial and I respect that, but what about flimsy fabrics such as for bathing suits? They can be given evenness to both sides, though I am guessing it's tricky to do so with less to work with ( say for a two piece.) And pointers for enthusiastic beginners ? I had a thought that carcinogenic does or does not account heavily for the kid- sized kits, but that's also a second question ..Thanks if you can answer them. Don't want to be reckless with a first attempt..Hope that it's no trouble to ask this in the comments below!

Both work well. Bigger the ice, bigger the "bubbles" of colour, but any ice at all will give a beautiful texture and gradient.

The dye would still spread from the ice, but not as much-- so it will be stronger colours with less of a gradient.

Soda ash, it's a necessary fixative so that the dye doesn't just run out when you wash it.

That's Soda Ash I'm sprinkling on it. The shirt was also soaked in a Soda Ash solution before the video began. This, along with thin ice cubes, will help the colours come out brighter.

Katarzyna Szczotka Not exactly. Soda ash acts as a fixative that chemically bonds the dye to the fabric. It's necessary when using procion dyes, or most will just come out in the wash.

The poweder will be watered down by the ice melting, adding water before too will water the colours down so they come out faded. ~*

Question: was your shirt pre-soaked in soda ash and then dried? I realize you added more soda ash on the back side...your shirt just looked so nice and dry and crisp....

It was soaked in soda ash for an hour, then run through the spin cycle of a washing machine-- This takes out most of the moisture while still maintaining the PH from the soak. Makes colours more vibrant 8)

+savannah 937 If they lose their colour, then you're probably not using Soda Ash, which is essential. Also, don't use dye kits from places like Walmart. A great place is Dharma Trading Company, and if you use their search bar you can find complete tie dye kits with everything you'll need.
