Watch the main video on Thrive on my channel: • Thrive: The Evolution ...
In the wake of my latest video, I played Thrive for an hour or two. People came along to watch a relaxing playthrough full of cellular murder.
As mentioned at the end of the video, this will likely be the last video on my channel until June due to real life commitments. Hopefully this is enough to keep you satiated.

One possible fix for the multicellular colonies is to shift the camera into the center of the colony and turn all of them into a single organism that moves in the same way as single celled organisms do, and with a turning speed affected by the number of cells attached to one another. It would probably be useful in that case to have a way of tracking the needs of each individual cell attached, as well as a conglomerate score of all cells. Possibly as well, there could be components that allow sharing of resources from one cell to another in a chain. If these things were implemented, cell stage could stick around for longer as a larger scale environment where multicellular organisms battle for dominance, before the true 3d multicellular stage takes place. The fact that these species have become multicellular could lead to organisms from the cell stage present in the multicellular 3d stage, with their appearance being an approximation of the colonies of cells from the cell stage.

I assume it would have to zoom out for true multi cellular life with the unicellular and resources being dots in the field. The cell would not show internal details. Cell types would be colour coded for function. For sessile animals and plants add filter tendrils and root exploration. Send these feelers out to seek and trap food near the curser. Slime molds would have the option to move to the end of the feeler at the curser. Fungi would then add a fruiting body function; shrinking all the mycelium to form the spore body. To make the sessile plant/ reef stage more interesting add chemo- communication. This allows you to jump point of view from plant to plant rather than move [without dying first]. Add a level of verticality to the 2D game by adding organism height as a form parameter. Then have a way to rotate the world to a 2.5D map with the heights depicted. Transition to full 3D can come later. Its similar how some top down games can tilt the map to give the appearance of 3D.

God, Thrive. That takes me back. I was on the Gaming Steve forums back when it was the place to be for the whole Spore thing and Thrive was something I got into on the rebound when that went south. I never heard of Thrive before today somehow. I was right there with the people DEEPLY disappointed with Spore after spending hours laughing to the creature creator demo, and often daydreamed with a notebook about how Spore “could have been”. I am glad this exists, especially since it shouldn’t by all rights. I am going to see if I can contribute with my C# experience. Thank you for letting us know about it!

@@102ndsmirnov7 well, before Spore I knew Maxis best from Sim City 2000, Sim Earth (which was what I hoped spore would be a spiritual successor to), Sim Farm, etc etc etc all the way back to my childhood in the 90s. I had experienced the true Simulators they had once been capable of creating. And I was so sad that those days were just gone for good. Nobody who wasn’t an Indie dev would risk releasing something like Sim Earth again, and I had really been hoping for something really in-depth and full of possibility, especially with how amazing I found the technology in the Creature Creator. Programmatically creating a walk animation for an animal with any number of legs? That was so cool!

I wonder what kinds of creatures you can actually evolve into, when this game eventually makes it to the creature stages. Like who's to say that plant-like lifeforms can't be as mobile as an animal? Consuming animals to get nutrients they might not easily get from their photosynthesis. Honestly, this game has more potential than it has any right to have. Kudos to everyone trying to keep this as realistic as possible. Wouldn't be surprised if this game was brought up in an evolutionary biology classroom, in a decade or so.

Adding mutation points seems ok for an easy mode, but I think having less than 100 mutation points for hard mode would be more tedium than difficulty. instead it should affect how fast other species evolve, how likely they are to evolve predation, and behaviour (non-predator species being less brave, predators being more brave and aggressive)

I can see a simple fix to bind: make it cheaper if symmetry is on so your cells are less likely to end up with one upside down. Shift B to bind and flip the cell you are binding to. Cell development to plants and multicellular creatures would be easier if you added plasmid and thus you can change the genetics without detaching from the bound cluster and share the change with the whole cluster. This of course is basic bacteria sex.

I find that this game really tries to push you towards being a plant-predator with the current patch map. My first run was hydrogen sulfide + iron, which failed as I traveled. The second run was going for iron and glucose. After finding that my cell was too slow to be a predator I decided to shoot toxin instead of more spikes. After slowly but surely gaining more energy I managed to get a nucleus. And then I didn't need iron respiration anymore(but would have loved an iron organelle) I can wait on patchmap procgen for a long while, just let me change the settings of different patches for now. If hydrogen sulfide was a lot more available or could be made, it would have been more of a strategy.

I'm so excited for when they implement RNG aspects. Spore made a lot of mistakes but in my honest opinion, the BIGGEST mistake in regards to the evolution aspect was that in every run, the meta is the same, because the PLANET is the same. Not only that but the planet never changes, so even if it was RNG, whatever was best in the beginning remains the best until the end of the game. I don't think the game will get very far, but I hope they get to RNG patch systems. The game would be fun even in just the cell stage if they added that. Because it'd force you to actually think when you evolve. As it stands, the meta in this is the same every time. Predatory algae. Photosynthesize and eat everything. The only thing that can really change is how much health you need. Since sometimes highly offensive creatures will develop, and other times they won't. This also makes it meta to wait as long as you can before evolving predatory traits like spikes and toxins. Since evolving those early game will ensure most cells in the world will also have them. Waiting late game will make it very likely most WON'T have them.

I know I'm exactly the kind of person this game doesn't need (thinks he has a cool idea, doesn't know a lick about game development), but I'm a sucker for games with smart name generation in it and I have to ask: Would it be possible to make the game generate a new name for an evolution as appropriate? I.e. the game understands that a small change constitutes a new species within the same genus, so the first part of your name remains the same and the second part is replaced, while a sufficient divergence from the type specimen would lead to a new genus altogether. Maybe a very small change could lead to a subspecies with a third name added to the end. And in the end you'd be able to see a cladistic representation of your entire ecosystem. I'll see myself out now ...
