I like the idea that the Ring is a Parasitic one, like that of the Orange light of Greed and Indigo light of Compassion. Where it doesn't choose it's users based off a strong emotion alone, but can inflict the essence of the Emotion just by wearing or being near it. Also hell no, i dont feel anything for Hal and Carol. They do this nonsense all the damn time.
@MidnightAge4 ай бұрын
I think that's a very good idea, I like that a lot. I could see a narrative where it is specifically because of Hal and Carol's proximity and involvement that the ring of sorrow chose Nate. Will and Love seem like antithetical to a kind of existential, unrestrained Sorrow. Perhaps their rather selfish, unheroic demonstration of their own feelings without regard to Nate's is specifically why the ring chose Nate. Or perhaps their utter callous lack of regard to Nate's feelings manifested it. Nate seemed like a genuine dude and a respectful significant other. Even just from what Sasha shared he expressed interest in Carol's feelings and concern for her well-being multiple times. It genuinely feels like he was the wronged party here.

@Bogkun4 ай бұрын
If there is one thing the universe abhors it’s imbalance, so when two of the most powerful emotions existing not for themselves but for each other, this would cause an imbalance so great that the emotional spectrum would have to do something to balance it all out. It needed to do something to break the two of them up and bring things back the way they’re supposed to. Sorrow exists when love has existed and has been rejected and so reaches out to crush all love in the environment. You ever been at a couple’s get together after being ditched? You would do anything to make all of those happy couples around you as miserable as you. With regard to will, in the face of sorrow, all will evaporates. As the Sorrow affected Dove states, there is no point to doing anything in this world when confronted by absolute sorrow. My theory, Hal’s gonna go up against Nate and find all his power drained away, carp is going to find hers warped and corrupted and out of her control and the two are going to see just how bad being together is not just for themselves, but for the emotional spectrum in the universe as a whole and break up, thus righting things again. Sure the comic seems to be showing them together in a happy hero light, but as we all know, pride always comes before the fall. They are delusional in their positions that there is nothing to regret with what they’ve done and that being together is for the best and the writers will flip this around as the realization of the truth hits them. Mark my words.

Right? Poor Nathan. He read as a genuinely likeable, loyal guy who got used and abused and then ultimately discarded by Carol. I hope he finds some sort of peace and Hal and Carol deserve some sort of karmic comeuppance for this. We’ll see if that happens though. Depression and sorrow aren’t a zero sum game, you can’t help someone with their anguish by saying someone else has it worse… Calling him an incel lantern is just blaming him for having feelings other than anger as a man. It’s a hideous take.

My issue is that they sort of wrote him in a way that made his depression seem manipulative rather than genuine and painful. It's not his fault as a character, and we do see that he has no intentions of being manipulative when he becomes a lantern, and is just genuinely crushed. But now he seems more like he uses his sadness to cause pain and corrupt other people. It's not him as a character, but unless the writers plan to reveal it as a parasitic ring that's making him worse and makes him want to make the world miserable, then it's probably more of a meh writing problem, or a characterization issue, because in this one he doesn't come off as sympathetic as in the last issue.

I like how the sorrow... Grey? Coming out is basically the other side of emotion coming out due to the instability of the spectrum this arc. The corps emotions (including ultra violet) are all MOTIVATIONAL emotions. Greed to get something, fear to do something, rage for revenge etc. But sorrow as shown with nate doesn't motivate you to *do*. It drives you to do nothing because it overwhelms you and exhausts you. But now, the Grey light allows this guy who can't take revenge, who maybe doesn't want Carol back, who isn't afraid, has no hope, and only thinks about himself to do *anything* with that emotion which is SPREAD IT. hurt people hurt people and the Grey light seems like aj infectious meme that exists just to perpetuate itself, just like sorrow just enforces itself the more you adress it

I'd almost like the resolution to have an almost Community or Frank Grimes style ending. Carol and Hal have to win by convincing Nate that he dodged a damn bullet in all this. That they are just absolute disasters, and the SAFEST thing for the rest of the GALAXY is that they remain together for the sake of EVERYONE ELSE. OR! Nate flips out and starts acting JUST LIKE Hal and Carol to show how reckless, cruel, and petty they can be. And in the process gets himself killed. Leaving Hal and Carol to just kinda stare off into the distance as the weight of this buckles their already ramshackle relationship.

I think people tend to gloss over the fact his whole life he has held Hope that by abiding in the system, doing all the right things. He thought he was finally getting his reward in Carol. He even tried to give her an out and she set him up to fall. This was the straw that broke him under the weight of a life time of disappointment. But I don’t think the writers might not keep it that way. Just like they probably won’t express the toxicity that a Hal/Carol relationship has. Sid and Nancy.

As someone who suffers from depression I adore the grey fog aspect; that is what life can be like when you're at a low. I have been calling that headspace "the grey" for years. And I really hope that Nathan's powers and character develop into the next phase of chronic depression; numb. Depressed people don't cry all the time, after a while, as a coping system, we emotionally shut down. So I'd love to see Nathan as this emotionally dead figure surrounded in a grey fog that is seemingly unstoppable because nothing anyone throws at him seems to effect him, but in reality its all just fueling the fog, expending his influence over the emotional spectrum, and causing him to passively shut down other lantern rings just by proximity. That's my opinion of the best depression based super power; you can't hurt him because nothing you can do is worse than what he already feels, and when you get caught in his aura you become as powerless as he feels.

I feel bad for Nathan because Carol has been nothing but horrible to him and is excusing it with "that's just how I am" but at the same time Nathan's character is at least to me written in a way that makes him being the lantern of sorrow come off as almost more manipulative than genuine. Which I find quite annoying because we do see that it is a very genuine emotion, and he's been nothing if not a good person throughout these stories, but the "I shall make the world feel my sorrow and it's all your fault angle" just doesn't sit well with me. I'm not sure if I like how they wrote him as a genuinely sympathetic character only to turn him into this. He comes off as the stereotypical "you don't love me anymore so I guess there's no point to life" person more than "I am genuinely heartbroken and can't help it". Which is mainly due to him wanting to spread his sorrow instead of being alone and miserable in it himself. I really hope that the ring turns out to be parasitic and we have one of those "this isn't the real you, fight it" moments where he does win over the ring but is still heartbroken and can't really forgive Carol, and Carol and Hal also comes to realise just how much they hurt people, and Carol decides to get some help with her mindset. Also why did they write Hal like this? I feel like he's gotten some hate from his writers in the past few years, what happened to flirty but good at heart Hal?

"You don't love me anymore so I guess there's no point in life" and "I am genuinely heartbroken and can't help it" are the same thing. That doesn't make their sadness less genuine. Emotions just suck like that.

I'm not saying it's his control what he feels, my issue is more how he's acting on it, even with depression it feels very out of character. Which is why I really hope they're going for a parasitic ring that consumes the wearer as much as the people around them, as he's become rather destructive by acting on his feelings. Sasha's unabashed love for flawed characters like Sorrow Lantern and Punchline is enthralling even if you don't care about those characters. But all this really makes Carol seem really messed up. She already divorced one guy for Hal. And didn't she murder Katma Tui? They should bring Cowgirl back into Hal's life, just to screw with things further.

_The fact Nathan basically has all of Inside Out Sadness abilities but he's turned it up to 11, is the most unintentionally hilarious thing they've done with the GL spectrum..._ *Also Debbie Downer would be the biggest Sorrow Lantern ever...*

So, I think there's a lot of potential here if you get the proper writer on it. I can easily see situations where despair could be damn powerful and pretty insurmountable.

Your voice over is so much fun and on point lol it’s the life it gives to the comic. I also believe they should just get him a pet as an apology could upbringing his spirit. And I wonder what avatar is the sorrow lantern ore?

During an intense battle, Hal accidentally breaks Nathan's legs. Nathan appears later as the Sorrow Lantern, but in a wheelchair. He looks at Hal, and in a silly voice says "I have crippling depression!"

There's this fantastic graphic novel series called 'DIE' about a bunch of edgy teenagers that get pulled into their very edgy d&d characters world. One of the characters gets more powerful, the more sadness he feels. This sorrow lantern has very similar vibes.

Some days it really hurts to have Hal as your childhood hero. But in this arc in particular, yea, everyone needs to split from each other. Also resisting making Big Lebowski nihilism jokes.

Honestly sasha, liked the red lanterns for their concept, and yellow with the green dicothamy, but others seem weird. Greed not more mind's state than emotion, along with will power too?

"Carol and Hal are a disaster," ...yeah. It's Carol. And Hal. That's... yeah. That's Carol and Hal. The least interesting, most frustrating parts of what is arguably DC's most interesting non-magical mythos. Green Lanterns, big yay! Hal and Carol, big boo! (I might be slightly biased.)

I think i would vote for Hal and Carol over Joker and Harley as the most toxic couple in DC. Joker and Harley are dangerous, but the harm they can do is usually localized. Hall and Carol are almost as bad, but their love problems can affect whole worlds and beyond.
@DCis14 ай бұрын
The difference between Harley and Carol is Harley truly excepted that Joker was toxic for her and truly moved on with others and didn't use them like Carol did Nathan.
@aiakumu35794 ай бұрын
But Harley always knew that she didn't care. Her issue was that Joker always loved Batman more than her. @DCis1

It's kinda hard to be intimidated by a Lantern that can be defeated by giving him a kitten. (Because it's impossible to be sad with a kitten)
@MemesToa4 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, we know so little about how this Lantern Ring works that we may run the risk of it making the kitten itself sad. And everyone knows that seeing a sad kitten will only make the viewer sad as well.

Need to sacrifice Hal and Carol as a couple so we can get Nate back to being the great character he was! Hal Carol and Nate all need to run in different directions
@AlexanderJWF4 ай бұрын
Seems to me like the initial intent of Nate's character arc & the actualization were completely different. Like, he was clearly menat to be a tragic villain but the comic just keeps portraying him as a sad sack victim of himself & of Carol. No one in this is run redeemable because everyone kept making obvious mistakes. Leading it to read less as tragic & more as a satire of itself.

@darryljack66124 ай бұрын
I think it works really well as a lantern color. With Sorrow being grey it's somewhere between or a combination of the white light of Life and the black light of Death.
@alexsolomon79914 ай бұрын
I'd be more impressed if this wasn't obviously turning a disposable character into a disposable villain... I would bet money that the sorrow lantern showing up is going to have no lasting effects on Green lantern's status quo, regardless of how many NPCs get killed along the way. Like the joker breaking out of Arkham and killing ANOTHER family..... Maybe surviving family member will pop up every now and again to point a finger but nothing actually changes.

Is it just me, or does this art make Carol's face look really scrunched in? Like it feels like her eyes are really close together and her lips a too far up so there's a lot of real estate up there not being use to its fullest and she has a Bruce Campbell chin I don't recall being a regular trait for her.
