It won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. I'm surprised it wasn't nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and for Best Cinematography. This is the best GODZILLA movie ever made!

Fiction: Odo Island, Great Japanese monster "Gojira". Fact: Tokyo Fire Bombing on March 10th, 1945. Tokyo "Black Market". Pairing of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle & the Japanese Imperial Army. On March 10th 2024, the 79th anniversary of the "Tokyo Fire Bombing", Takashi Yamazaki & crew is awarded the Oscar in Hollywood California. Japanese Zero, the Shinden, the "Takao" & all the Warships are factual. Using in CGI. Takashi Yamazaki tells a great Japanese post WWII story using the great Japanese monster "Gojira" that people wouldn't be interested in anyway. The last line, civilian war survivor, "Noriko", looks to the side of the camera and says, "Is your war.....now finally over?" In Japanese theater's, after the movie, people applauded.

This is the movie that actually pulls off the Human Scale story with the Giant Monster Action story. Films often try and do both and muck it up to some extent. But this story makes them both directly and layeredly intertwined

You can tell the story was meticulously thought out from beginning to end. Yamazaki didn’t make excuses for writing a crappy human story. He knew it had to be solid. The fact that the film is so firmly grounded in reality makes the fantasy aspect that much more tangible. And the plan to defeat Godzilla was based on what seemed to be scientifically plausible. It wasn’t cheap or hokey.

The movie won an Oscar for visual effects but it should have won some other Oscars, IMO. It was excellent. This was a real masterpiece. It took Godzilla back to its roots==Odo Island, the nuclear radiation as part of its creation. The human characters were on point--poignant drama of PTSD, rebuilding and regaining a purpose and heroism. Godzilla's effects were flawless and the great director Steven Spielberg met the director and told him he watched the film 3 times! I am sorry I missed this at the theater an in fact, I think they need to re-release it so more folks can see it on the big screen. I streamed it and have already re watched it twice. It exceeds expectation. JMO.

They made a bid stompy monster movie, made it so it was respectful of the original, made it centered on the human characters while still giving you all the monster you wanted to see, it was written and acted so well it can make a grown man cry, and they did all that on a budget of something like 10 or 15 million dollars. Not only is this a wonderful movie, it should make current day Hollywood feel ashamed of itself.

Pre-mutated Godzilla AKA Godzillasaurus only attacked the light tower because it got startled. It also only attacked the mechanics who fire on it. Hence, the reason Tachibana and Koichi survived. Post-mutation Godzilla had to punish humanity for causing its mutation. If you think about it Godzilla was simply an innocent creature trying to live its life until humanity screwed it up.

Gojira (Japanese OG, 1954) is a masterpiece, as is Godzilla Minus One. Not until 2015 did I see Gojira in its original form. I had seen the Raymond Burr (Americanized) version when I was a kid - around 1961 or 62, on t.v. and even in its butchered form it is, for over 60 years, my favorite film and in 2015 I was blown away seeing the original and when the girls choir scene played I wept myself to pieces. Now this Godzilla bookend has created a perfect duo of masterpieces. Thank you Casual Nerd and Japan and Tojo.

23:38 Not only was the narrative plot tight as hell, they kept the original 1954 subtext of Japanese society dealing with the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but elevated it by also dealing with the guilt felt as a nation after the war, both for their actions and their survival. Even slipped in some commentary on the current evolution of the JSDF mission to include a more offensive capability again. So good on so many levels.

American Godzilla spends hundreds of millions to make a buddy cop movie co-staring King Kong. Shows sooooo much kaiju Japanese Godzilla spends maybe fifteen million to make the best Godzilla movie ever. The FX got the Oscar not because they were this awesome, but because they were this awesome for less money than most movies spend on catering. And gives us actually good human characters without over doing the spectacle of the Big G. Missing this in the theatre is some I truly regret.

Koichi was frozen in fear. and heavy . Noriko had to brace herself and push him with all she had. If they were running she might have been more able to tackle them both into the alley but at that point no gauranntee that the building in front of them would stay standing. So not bad for a split second decision on her part. She acted out of love not self preservation.

I’m so torn between this movie and the original as the best G film. I go with the original Gorjia 1954 as the best simply because the symbolic subject is a good bit deeper in its importance and profound statement. (production value is excluded - its unfair to compare films 70 years apart in the making) This films use of Godzilla as a representation of his PTSD and Survivor Guilt is masterful in nuance. Godzilla grows in devastation as he refuses to fully face his pain and forces him back to the trauma in direct parallel to his home life, its perfection. However, the original film is so much deeper. An anti-war film with a finger pointing at the problem of war as a human race issue. Godzilla in that film is ourselves with an insane bent of self destruction. (at the end of the film as Serizawa approaches Gorjia on the bottom of the ocean, Gorjia turns and looks at him, at that point - we are face to face with ourselves.) but this film is so masterfully presented with the human drama clear and easy to identify with. The original 1954 human drama is muddied enough to slightly obscure the driving need to keep weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of us crazy humans. so I’m torn between this movie and the original as the best G film….

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!! I think for me, the first one might have greater significance, but this is the better movie. Which is simply to say I'd rewatch this one sooner than the other, but that likely has to do with taste than quality. They're both great though!

@Mangolite Ай бұрын
Narratively and thematically, I preferred "Godzilla Minus One" as my top-tier Godzilla film, with the 1954 "Gojira" as a close second. The original used Godzilla as a metaphor for the atomic bomb and an allegory stemming from that. However, "Godzilla Minus One" (G-1) expands upon those themes, exploring guilt, hope, love, determination, and life affirmation, with a kamikaze pilot in the lead. The script focuses on a core group of characters, each with their own arc, culminating in a common goal: to live. In contrast, "Gojira" features a clunky love triangle and a central theme about not creating powerful weapons that can kill, with a scientist sacrificing his life to ensure his invention couldn't be duplicated, thus reflecting the Bushido code. G-1 moves away from this idea of self-sacrifice through self-deletion. For this reason, G-1 is my top pick, not because of the special effects or modern filmmaking, as the original 1954 film still holds up, but because of its deeper exploration of themes.
@dolphinsrr
@dolphinsrr Ай бұрын
I love both films as much. But if i had to pick one i would just give a slight edge to minus one. Not because of the effects but more characters that were involved in the story. 😊😊😊
@BrianWelch-ks9ms
@BrianWelch-ks9ms Ай бұрын
I dunno, I thought G -1 was also a great antiwar film-only with a tighter focus on the Japanese culture and its legacy of throwing lives away under the pretense of "honor". Godzilla seems to be a direct stand-in for the indiscriminately destructive nature of war and its devastating effects on civilians. The military refusing to inform civilians about Godzilla's appearance is akin to how it refused to communicate the exact nature and casualties of war to its people, letting them live in ignorance to prevent "widespread panic" about potential attacks. I also think it's important to note that Godzilla only escalates to using its atomic breath in response to attacks from military-grade weapons-which could be a reference to the escalation of armed conflict that resulted, finally, in the use of atomic bombs. The only time Godzilla is successfully stymied is when the Japanese people, acting in their capacity as civilians, use scientific knowledge and clever planning instead of pure military might. I also thought that the scene where Doc is describing the plan to the group of civilians and former military is incredibly significant. In contrast to Japanese military culture's emphasis on honor and courage in the face of defeat, and dishonor for running away, the fact that half of the people leave without any sort of social stigma accompanying them, and the later declaration of fighting for life rather than throwing lives away, marks a major turning point similar to the one Japanese faced in the aftermath of WWII. There's also the bit about the brand-new fighter plane having an ejection seat, in contrast to the earlier fighters that, even if they were not intended for kamikaze missions, did not have such devices. It's the movie's way of showing that even the Japanese military was changing their attitude about the expendability of human life, and that going forward the military would also come to value the lives of its soldiers (to a degree).

I want to see it, but with this level of story telling, my heart simply can not take it… When you learn that the ending shot with the black mark is literally Godzilla’s genes… That makeshift family has been through enough and they don’t deserve what she’s about to possibly turn into… 🌺😐😐😐🌺

First; loved everything about this movie. But what I really appreciated was that they avoided the snappy, smartass cliched sitcom dialog that has become so prevalent in so many American movies (not just Godzilla) mostly with the superfluous characters that everyone hates so much. It's like these characters have no point but comic relief and sarcastic trope to the extent that we can't wait to see them die. ("Yeah, let's bring Godzilla in for a beer!" WTLF?) Here, the attempts at humor were minimal and appropriate to the moment, instead of just trying to fill out a script with little to no substance. The other thing was the score. Bringing back the original music was a no-brainer, because for 70 years, the Godzilla theme has been the sound of dread and fear.

Boy, this movie must really take off in the second half, judging by these rave reviews. I watched the first half of the movie, and then I turned it off in disgust because I hated it so much. I have no plans to ever go back and finish the movie. I thought that Japan as a nation was immune to "the message" which currently infects Hollywood movies. I guess that's no longer the case. I saw a weak, milk-sop of a man being henpecked by a miserable, unmarried, masculine woman. That's a little too on target for me in today's world.

This movie pisses me off. Not at it, at the "Monarch" crap. They have 1/3 of the budget have the disadvantage of subtitles and seriously is waaaaaaaaaaaa... (deep breath)...aaaaaaaay better. This needs two suspension of disbelief: 1)Godzilla exists, 2) Nukes make him bigger and give him funky traits. the "monarch" movies have too many to count, from Hollow Earth to secret but well funded organization
@t0dd000
@t0dd000 Ай бұрын
It succeeds at the suspension of disbelief because ... it's not a monster movie. Or more correctly, it's not a film about a monster. The monster films that fail (beyond mere spectacle) fail because they forget that the film isn't about the monster. This is the same for all stories with mythic and supernatural elements.
