This is the terrible ending to our mockingbird nest.
The egg-laying process of a mother mockingbird is an amazing thing to watch. Mockingbirds are known for their beautiful songs and smart behavior, but their nesting and egg-laying are just as interesting. If you love watching birds and want to learn about mockingbirds, this description will help you understand what happens when a mother mockingbird lays her eggs.
Mockingbirds build their nests in shrubs, trees, or bushes. Ours are in a blackberry bush! They like places that keep their nests hidden and safe from animals that might want to harm them. The mother and father mockingbird work together to make a strong nest. They use twigs, grass, leaves, and other plant parts to create a cozy cup-shaped home. This can take several days as they carefully collect and arrange the materials.
When the nest is ready, the mother mockingbird starts to lay her eggs. She lays one egg each day, usually in the early morning. The eggs are small and smooth, and have a pale blue or greenish color with speckles. There are usually three to five eggs in a nest.
While the mother is laying eggs, she spends a lot of time in the nest, making sure each egg is in the right spot. The eggs need to stay warm to grow into baby birds. Both parents take turns keeping the eggs warm, but the mother does most of the work. The father helps by watching for danger and bringing food to the nest.
The eggs take about 12 to 14 days to hatch. During this time, the parents are very careful to keep the nest safe. The mother hardly ever leaves the nest, only going out for short times to eat. The father keeps guard and brings food for the mother.
When the eggs hatch, tiny baby birds come out. These chicks are very weak and need their parents' help to stay warm and fed. The parents work hard to bring insects and berries to the nest so the chicks can grow strong.
Watching a mother mockingbird lay her eggs and take care of her babies is an incredible experience. From building the nest to hatching the eggs and feeding the chicks, mockingbirds show how dedicated and caring they are. If you want to learn more about mockingbirds and see videos of their nesting habits, be sure to explore more birdwatching content.

You knew the nest was there and you knew your house cat has free to roam the vicinity. This one was not entirely up to mother nature, you share responsibility.

A domesticated cat is the same kind of creature as a mountain lion - the only difference being size. A cat will hunt - as that's simply in its instincts. And there's no morality in the hunt. No good or bad or responsibility.

@@DAsrada When did i said that the cat was to blame? Of course the cat will explore and hunt, its instinct. What I said was that the humans knew the nest was there, they knew cats hunt, and still they chose not to prevent the cat to access that area. The birds became lunch, what a surprise.

Those who cant keep their cat under control shouldn’t have cats. All these meaningless killing..

Meaningless? It was hungry and saw a meal. No different than the birds being fed living earthworms. Also a pretty good chance was a stray.

@@johnfahrer5038extremely different than a bird since birds are wild. Cat gets food, shelter, vet visits. Ignorant owners let them decimate local wildlife populations not for food but for fun, then morons like you defend it somehow
