My vet said that she learned it back in uni but she didn't want to kid me and pretend she was good at it, it was too long ago and she doesn't deal with nutrition every day. I respected her more when she said it, I appreciate it when people dare to say "not my field of competence". It's better than chiming out simplified or general advise or outright wrong advise. She referred me to a vet who specializes in nutrition.

Thank you so much for defying the myth about feeding kitties the same thing all the time! When I first adopted my senior, people criticized me for giving her a bunch of different wet food options to find what she liked, and then rotated between her favorites. I made a game of it, would put several flavors out for her, and she would pick the one she wanted for that meal. People said it was dangerous for me to give her different foods! I made sure to OK my approach with the vet, so was not being negligent. Who wants to eat the same thing all the time? Not me or my kitties!

I totally agree with the importance of giving your get a lot of different food types. In the shelter I worked we often had cats who only got one brand, one flavour and they refused to eat anything else because they were so stressed out and frightened. With my own cat I adopted I had similar problems. She was fed one dry food in one flavour since she was a kitten. Now she is five and I needed four months to convince her that wet food and different tastes are nice. She still wants her dry food and begs like she starves to death, but I keep it at as a jackpot treat because she won't eat any other treats, and I tried even human stuff XD. One quick sentiment over talking nutrion to you VET: Our deceased family cat was heavily diabetic and the VET recommended a really expensive DRY FOOD WITH ADDED SUGAR ... I'm getting so angry even now ... So honestly I don't trust VETs too much on nutrition.

Vets are often skeptical of raw food because human error is easy with raw food and many people have messed it up (and caused harm to their cats). Certified nutritionists, however, often preach that raw food is the best for your cat. While I appreciate that removal of grazing may ease transition from one type of food to another, I think it's also important to gradually transition from grazing to meals only. Also (my personal opinion), once the cat has successfully transitioned food types, reintroducing a source of additional food for grazing should be done. (In my experience, a cat will eat the food it enjoys and ignore other food sources, **unless** for some reason the cat becomes extra hungry between meals. Also, having the security of knowing a food source is **always** available frees a cat - or a person, or any creature - to shift energy normally devoted to thinking about food toward some other, hopefully more beneficial, endeavor.)

That is a really good idea...our kitties are on the pink bag of Iams right now, but him saying he saw kitties starve themselves because of not being familiar with the food scares me. BUT, our two kitties are strays that showed up out here in a VERY small country town and they were just HUNGRY. I think if something DID happen to all four of us they would possibly revert back to just eating whatever is available. I know it is SO different for a cat in a cage at the shelter vs. a cat out in the wild who is hungry all of the time and just looking for their next meal. With the poor babies who end up in shelters after someone has loved them as their own, and they are suddenly put into a shelter, I think maybe they are going through their own form of kitty sadness/depression, as well, which can cause a loss of appetite possibly :( Either way, I think our kitties will just eat whatever they can...we give wet food every few days as "yummies"...they know the word and hear the snap of the can. I look forward to switching over to raw in the near future...I think it will be easy to do it, but I am concerned about cost....I am going to look up recipes and see what all is involved

I know this video is 2 years old, however I would like to add my little anecdotal advice if your cat is struggling to transition to eat wet food: get a kitten!! My Rory was the pickiest of the picky eaters. He would only lick the juice off the wet food but he wouldn't actually eat any of it, no matter how many different kinds of foods I would get him to try. That was until I got a kitten, named her Tsuki. Kittens are wonderful at learning new habits, so I have been giving her nothing but wet food and I've been changing up the kind of foods I do give her, so I'll give her a raw egg along with her wet food and she absolutely loves it. So when Rory saw me giving her wet food, he almost overnight decided he wanted to eat what she was eating. Fast forward to now and I have Rory eating wet food with a raw egg and now I want to try raw salmon, to see if I can get him to eat that too. 😊

Hey Jackson, thanks for the good info (once again)! One of our cats was switched to a wet food diet recently because of diabetes (in fact, switching food reversed her diabetic symptoms). Your comment about cats eating warm fresh food in the wild was a light bulb moment for me. I started serving the wet food with a couple of tablespoons of hot tap water poured on top, and it was surprising to see how eagerly the cat lapped it up. It really increases the aroma (or stink, if you hate the smell of wet food), and I'm sure the extra moisture is good for her, too.

You can always wet down dry cat food with bone broth. If i had to feed my 6 cats on a tight budget, that's what I'd do. The bone broth would add back the nutrients they lose in heating dry food with the exception of getting the protein up the percentage raw food gives, plus blood and the brain parts... like he said. But it would be better than plain straight dry... and I'd get dry food that doesn't have grains. (Actually looking on the ingredient list, not the front side ads). It's the grains that cause the diseases in cats so badly. I was always told, even if cats have less to eat but good food, it's better than plenty of toxic food. Hard thing with indoor only cats is they will start eating things they shouldn't (plastic, paper etc) if they get hungry. Outdoor cats will find something... bugs... mice... rodents. Indoor cats will eat not good things when they are stressed and hungry. Lol... it's a tough thing to domesticate an animal. In really hard times... I'd have to let my cats try to hunt their own food to supplement. It's hard, especially knowing times are about to get really tough for everyone. It's expensive for humans to eat crappie food now. One day at a time... the best we can with what we know... that's all we can do.
@lakiu9729
@lakiu9729 3 жыл бұрын
When you prepare their raw food try to buy everything in bulk,which should last a couple weeks or months. That only can reduce cost enormously. Also I believe that dry food isn’t 100% bad for them,we know that some cats can live an active healthy life without any serious health issues with a full 100% dry diet ( but again that it’s not the case, we still want to avoid that) So you keep it at a reasonable amount, like 10-15% their portions. It’s equivalent to human fast food, if you enjoy some here and there, and most cats go crazy for it, you can consider adding some of those to minimise the cost of food if you feeding multiple felines at one !

I wish my cat could eat canned food. Even if he would eat it, he is stuck on a special diet due to sensitive tummy issues. My only saving grace for variety is that he can eat those tube snacks you mentioned. I always use the special dishes to avoid him experiencing whisker fatigue, as he had issues with that too. Considering where I rescued him from, it's a miracle he's alive and now healthy...even though I felt like we lived at the vet office for many months, lol.

I adopted a street cat who had stomatitis. Our vet gave him some tubes of “cat crack” (Dr. Butler’s cat sticks). They are only available at the vet, but my guy would suck them down so fast he didn’t notice the meds inside! Eventually. (this summer) he had dental extractions. They were also great for his healing time.

Thanks so much for all your feeding tips & info. As a new cat-mama, today I started the transition from dry/wet food to raw/wet food. I'm happy to say that my picky lil girl, Kismet chowed down like a champ, and after dinner all 3 came up one by one to give me "head bonks" as if to say "thanks ma, that was great!" And as I'm laying here posting this comment, my boy, Joker is laying flat on his back and pushing up making biscuits on my neck & shoulder. I'm looking forward to seeing my other girl, Domino slim down a bit as we get away from kibble. I never knew that even the so called premium brands were so bad. 😳 Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and I'll definitely 👀 stay tuned for more 👀

thank you, Jackson, for educating us. I have an 11-yr-old neutered male who is morbidly obese, and I am now encouraged to move him from kibble to at least wet food, if not a raw diet. I also have a 6-month-old spayed female who is still on kitten food. The rescue I got her from uses kibble, and I want to change her to something more appropriate (wet or raw or home-made). Your information has been so very helpful. Since it's a Sunday, I'll be calling my vet tomorrow to get her thoughts and approval for both our furbabies. Again, thank you so much for all you do for the feline world.

Jackson, thanks to you I've transitioned all 3 of my cats from free fed dry food to now. Now they have a small serving of their same old dry food in the morning (to which they have 30-45 mins access). And then later in the evening they have about 2 oz each of wet canned food (varies daily between pate, chunks, gravy...) Eventually I'd like to get all 3 of them on raw but my worry is the cost. They're all very different: 6YO+over weight, and two 1YO kittens.

Hey Jackson, I can't thank you enough for your recent videos on nutrition! My kitten has been having unhealthy stool for almost 2 months now. I have tried almost everything after speaking to 3 vets. Mixing canned pumpkin in his diet, probiotics, switching to boiled chicken and rice temporarily, antibiotics, deworming, fecal test, different types of wet food, and a prescribed diet. Some changes slightly improved his stool but it was still inconsistent and eliminates more creamy like stool. After watching your videos I decided to give the raw diet a try (yes without consulting my vet) and his stool became super healthy almost instantly!! It's just been 2 days so far but his stool hasn't looked this healthy in over two months. It hasn't only been healthier for my cat he also loves it!! Thank you so so much! I'm sticking with raw diet and I'm looking forward to give some variety to my cat instead of a the same prescribed diet for 2 months :)

There are also a lot of dehydrated raw foods on the market which you can use to help switch a cat from kibble to raw by tearing it up into small pieces or grinding it up and sprinkling it on. If you're switching from wet to raw you can moisten it and add it to the wet. I always kept a bag of dehydrated on hand (same brand as frozen raw) in case A: the power goes out and I lose the food in the fridge/freezer and B: if I forgot to defrost the next meal and my pet wants to eat now!. Another switching tip is present the food in a different way. Maybe the pet will turn their nose up if you serve it for a meal in the kitchen but will eat it when presented in a puzzle toy in the living room. Also I had a dog who refused to drink when away from home no matter how hot it was outside. Worried about dehydration I used to take a small amount of the dehydrated raw, mix with water and she'd gobble it down. She thought she was getting a extra meal and I knew I was getting water in her.

I'm mostly feeding my cat raw food and he totally loves it. There's way more of that "raw cat" in him now, and it's great to see him so active and happy. My vet said you should give your cat a bit of good quality dry food too, just so he stays accustomed to it. If he later in life gets a kidney disease for example, it might mean he has to have a low-protein special diet which in some cases is dry food, and it's good that your cat is used to it. Jackson's kibble rant seems a bit biased to me, and I don't know if it's only about American kibble or every kibble ever created no matter where you're from. In my country not every dry food looks like carbage. Is kibble that bad if there's no grain in it and very little carbs? Is it that bad if there are no artificial colors or flavors added? Is it that bad if the brand says they use low temperatures in the making process? Is it that bad if the ingredients are clearly stated in the package and you know exactly which parts of an animal are used? Is it that bad if you serve it to your cat mixed with water, like cereal, and your kitty obviously likes it? Jackson makes it sound like giving dry food to your cat is a crime, but I really think it's ok if it's only a small part of your cats diet and you make an effort to give only the best dry food available. What ya think?

When it comes to kibble if it is low / no grain in it, it usually has legumes which can cause kidney disease in your cats if fed over time. This is actually why my vet told me that when choosing between the two, the grain free kibble is usually worse for them because of that. Grain free wet or raw food is good for cats though. Granted, if you are willing to put in the time to look into the cat food ingredients on the bag and know the tricks they use to trick you into buying their kibble (for example, “made with beef” has less meat than “beef for cats” because of laws stating how much meat is required to use such phrases in the USA), I don’t think kibble would hurt your cats. It’s a hassle but hey, I don’t want to bring raw cat food with me when I go on vacation or road trips with my cats. I think it as a treat from their healthy raw diet. Hahaha.

I know you reccomend wet food over dry food but I need help. Someone with a similar experience please reply to this🙏🏻 My cat has liver issues and test results showed that she might even have a chronical liver failure. It was that bad. We did the treatment, use the meds and I fed her with a prescribed kibble for liver issues. One month later we do the tests again and she is way much better. Wet said after about 1,5-2 months liver is gonna be all better. Vet only gave us a light (couldnt find a better word) syrup to give to her once a Day and told us to keep feeding her with that kibble for at least 4 more months. The vet warned us about not giving wet food or other kibbles because it contains a lot of fat and proteins which is not the best for especially cats with liver issues. But on the internet the solution to everything is wet food or raw food. I only want the best for my baby but I'm having trouble choosing a diet. Too much information, don't know which one to trust. And at the end of the day it's my baby's health at stake.

I tried most of these tips for 6 months when I first adopted my hoarder cat rescue. She still only eats kibble despite trying several wet food brands. She has a lot of food insecurity issues and would insist on only eating 1/3 to 1/2 of it (and I’d only serve a 1/2 of a 3 oz. can!) then “bury” her wet food for later and then it dries out. I put it in the fridge and she hates leftovers so there’s that (even after heating it up). I may try again at some point once she’s better recovered from her PTSD. I’ve been using a timed feeder for her dry but she still grazes on it all day and always saves some for later. If I take it away, she freaks out and paces around the house.

give her time. i rescued an aproximatelly 1 year old panther off the streets. she was probably raised indoors and "escaped". for the first months i couldnt even convince her to eat wet food. what helped is that my 2 older cats are used to eating wet and raw food mostly, are mostly schedule fed and they get suuuper exited when i do certain things that signal them that feeding hour is up so she also got into the excitement with them. was very dissapointed in the beginning when i put wet food in front of her. she DID NOT like it. i smudged some on her nose so she tastes it at least. she started eating little by little wet food. also, what i do with her wet food is that i add a bit of hot water and mix it, so that brings up the temperature of the food a bit and also makes the smell and taste more potent. even after a year she still doesnt eat raw food. she licks it, eats like a pea size and leaves the rest. but the same way she got used to wet food, i have hope she will grow into liking raw food as well. dont give up!

hey my cats will only eat pate food. the their fav way to eat it is when I use hot water to turn it into a soup. I get the most response on wet food from them when I make it that way! maybe when you take it out of the fridge add a bit of water and heat it up for a few seconds in the mic! Ive been trying to encourage more chunky foods for my cats and the way they best eat those is when I nuke em for like 10-20 seconds (it doesn't have to be HOT! just luke warm!) they dont eat all of the chunky that way but they eat more of it than they would normally! best of luck! maybe some calming treats would help kitty stabilize a bit? and once you get her into a routine I suspect that may help her also! I have a puppy who has similar food struggles! she GULPS it down and when we first got her a few months ago nothing in her reach was safe! she acted like she was going to starve to death! now I can leave her in the same room as the cats food and she will NORMALY ignore it! last night we allowed her to sleep out side of her kennel and she never once touched the kittys food! so give kitty some time! and like I said a regular feeding schedule seems to have helped puppy out a LOT! Also her calming treats help as well!

I may try the lickable treats with her (Friskies Lil Soups look promising) as a start. That's the only thing I haven't tried that Jackson suggested. She's on a high protein/low carb food and always drinks out her fountain. It would be good if I can get her to eat some wet just for the variety and so that things are easier in her senior years (meds, tooth issues, etc.). I even tried Fancy Feast after buying premium brands and she wouldn't go for it . . . and I thought FF was like kitty crack. I've had her nearly a year and she's improved a ton. She was almost feral in the beginning and hid in cat caves all the time.

My cat is soo happy!! Uni loved the food!!! You have no idea, I didn't realize giving them dry food was bad. Growing up I always had dogs and we cooked for them all sorts of things, usually with meat in them, for some reason I thought that was bad for them and that I should've fed them dry food (because of the vitamins or something... idk). This is my first cat, we've had her for 4 years and I've noticed she's been sad lately, sleeping wayyy more than usual. So I went to you, I saw the three videos (dry, wet, raw food) and was amazed, went straight to buy my cuttie some wet food. Ohhh the look on her face, she was the happiest cat you ever saw! She didn't need no transition, she just wanted wet food (the old food was barely being touched for a while, I should've picked up on that). Mind you she's not the type of cat to cry for food, but she's been walking by me, rubbing up to see when I will give her again this glorious thing. Even the bitting is paused, I mean, I couldn't get the bitting to stop no matter how much I played, how clean the kitty pebbles were or anything. I hope this is just the thing needed and we can move to raw in a little while.

The other one (Oscar) 9yrs old is super heavy after I changed his dry food to a healthier one but still has gained a tremendous amount of weight. He is 19lbs I’m so worried about his health. He plays but only on his back for 5 mins 🥹 If Holistic vets were not so expensive I’d definitely go for one. Jackson thank you for your devotion in educating us about cats’ health.

Hi Jackson, I feed my cat raw meat these days and it reminds me of my mum, who always used to chop up gravy beef into a fine mince for our old Siamese cat who had no teeth. It was so dedicated of her to spend all the time prepping the food. But that cat lived to 21 years old. I'm sure the raw meat had a lot to do with her longevity.

We are in the process of transitioning over to raw and as you stated here, started from kibble to wet canned food, then added in the raw food. They love it so much. Didn't have an issue with the transition with any of them. And as you stated, it can take some patience as we did the canned food for about 3ish weeks before adding the raw in. Again, no issue here. :) Love these videos! Thanks you so much :)

I have a scared kitty who was rehomed to me. She has a complicated story, she hides from me while I am awake, only been here 3 weeks,... Her previous humans told me that wet food was not a good idea for her as she is a long hair cat. I took your advice and tried giving her a poultry based wet food, in addition to an optional separate portion of her dry food. She went to town on the wet food, and her digestive system handled it very well. I think my scared girl may just have a fish allergy. Tonight she gets chicken and gravy shreds. Last night she had turkey and gravy. I just want the best for my scared girl. She's a Queen, but she's too afraid to embrace it. Thank you for the videos. Your help an insight is invaluable to me. Onna thanks you too.

Is there an issue with transitioning kittens to a raw food diet? I know they have different nutritional needs than adult cats, but it seems like transitioning them when they're younger would be easier?
@Neinteen91
@Neinteen91 3 жыл бұрын
I think the only difference is the amount of feed: I know that adult cat only need food of 2-3% of their healthy body weight while weaned kittens need 15% per day with higher calcium and taurine content. I'm not an expert but there has be videos and web pages that explains them in more detail, but i don't see any difference in ingredients of what they can and can't eat.
@serabyne7536
@serabyne7536 3 жыл бұрын
the only difference is that kittens need to be fed whenever they are hungry, and also that they need a 75/15/10 instead of 80/10/10 (this stands for musclemeat/bone/organ) but yes, transitioning a kitten to raw food is much more easy than an older cat, mostly because kittens will eat almost everything they are given, they like to explore with their mouths and they are not yet addicted to kibble (as most cats will be after eating it for a long time).

I know this comment is old but in case anyone is browsing and wondering - kittens do have different nutritional needs than adults. As others have said, kittens need more calories per day than an adult cat. But they also need a higher percent of those calories to come from fat - particularly fat that contains DHA. I’m no vet, but I think you could probably achieve this with a raw diet by adding fish oil to the mix right before you feed them.

My cats always seem to be wanting their food at the same times, around 6AM, 1-4PM and 7 PM. They are mostly into wet food, but one really loves dry. I'm going to transition them off dry completely and use it for a treat or not leave it out for them to graze on. My cats actually sleep at night on the same schedule as me. Well, except during the day. They of course nap and such. Now getting them to try raw, I will mix with wet to see how they like it, small and gradual. Thank you for the tips, Jackson!

I'm not sure if it's this video or the previous one I watched on feeding cats raw food, but you may have saved my life. The video mentions cats going a long time without eating getting fatty liver disease. Blood tests have shown my liver enzymes to be up for no apparent reason. After watching this, I researched and found out that the fact that I don't eat early in the day and eat all of my calories in the afternoon or later could be causing or contributing at least to my test results. Appointment with the doctor this week.

Hi Jackson! I got my senior cat, Vicious, last September. She was one of my friend's cats, but my friend had to move to Japan for work and couldn't bring any of her cats with her so I got Vicious. Vicious eats dry food, and she was prescribed the dry food version of Pro Plan Veterinary Diets EN: Gastroenteric because she vomits a lot (usually chunks of dry food that looks like she just inhaled it instead of chew). I tried getting her into wet food but she just licks it. Unfortunately I have been free feeding her because I'm usually at work for hours at a time, but I want to get her one a schedule. One day out of the week, I'm sometimes gone for twelve hours :( Do you have any advice about feeding times for my schedule ? Sorry for the ramble, but thanks in advance!

Get a timed feeder. Feed wet b4 leaving & put a small feeding of dry in timed feeder & set timer for 6 hrs later. When u come home, feed wet again. Pet safe timed feeder is inexpensive & is what I use when I have a long day. There r others out there too but I pd a whopping $12 for mine. I do use painters tape on battery compartment tho just to b safe in case he bats it around. Keeps door secure. Has 2 compartments for 2 different feedings if need b but u can use just 1 if u don't need both. Super easy to set. I also use doc & phoebes hunting feeder to get out the door without interruptions & i throw a little kibble in that & he has to bat it around to get pcs out. My cat is on a wet dry combo bur he gets more wet food than anything & a water fountain is great too. I use catit flower fountain cuz it doesn't get debris in it like bowl 1s do. I clean it wkly. Takes about 10 min.

Based on your other video(s) we transitioned our three cats to wet and raw only over a several week period. They are 1, 6 & 11 years old. What a difference in all of them. More energy, softer fur, playful, weight loss, and more consistent sleeping at night. Wish I had done this a few years ago.

@@louann479 we buy the raw at a local pet food store. They (the cats) would eat that exclusively as they love it, but we mix some other wet and dry throughout the day to make the total food bill more manageable. The rabbit is $25/bag which is 12 patties, so we split 2/day in the morning for the 3 cats. The only food all 3 agree on…

@simonederobert1612

@ Eshita Shah I hate to tell you this, but - Human doctors don't get good education on human nutrition, either! Before I retired, and before I became a health-care provider, I was a nurse in a university hospital in the Labor and Delivery/Maternity unit. While I was there, I saw some pretty malnourished moms-to-be. I would try to talk to the docs and docs-in-training about human (especially pregnant women) nutrition, only to have them say they all advised their patients to follow a healthy diet, but were totally unable to tell me (and, by extension) or their patients just what a healthy diet is for women of child-bearing age.
