Their green leafy lives matter too! 🌱 (No doubt I’ll get some backlash for that one 😬). Maybe they can be re-homed. Nevertheless, it’s a good thing you’re looking into this now before it’s too late. making it lose weight is easy. buy chicken breast fillets, cut them in pieces that are at about the weight of a small bird and give one piece in the morning and one in the evening raw and have the cat play a lot. no other food, no treats, and ignore any begging. you should add a piece of another type of meat at about the same size every other day for some extra nutrients. cats can survive for a long time with nothing but a single mouse or sparrow a day as food so this amount is more than enough if you get your fat cat to burn the stored fat through exercise.

jpteknoman I agree with most of your comment, however feeding a cat raw meat is not as simple as giving them pieces of chicken breast. The food needs to be complete and balanced. If you think about it, a mouse that a cat would eat has bones and organs. As a general rule, feeding a cat raw meals should include 80% muscle meat, 10% organs and 10% bones. It is not healthy to feed cats non-complete and non-balanced meals.

The point about raw meat is that, yes, cat's can absolutely eat raw meat that's very very fresh, as in a prey that they've just newly killed, but raw meat that's given by a human is a completely different story. Raw meat given by a human has had time to develop all sorts of bacteria, it's not the same as a very fresh kill.
@one_smol_duck4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, raw meat that's been processed by humans is way different from raw meat from a mouse they've just caught. Hell, we could safely eat significantly more raw meat if it was ultra fresh
@evilsharkey89544 жыл бұрын
The reason we cook meat is because it kills parasites, and humans that didn’t get parasites from eating raw meat tended to pass their genes on to more surviving offspring. Our ancestors have been cooking meat since prehistory. It has nothing to do with processing. Cats never stopped eating raw meat in their evolution. Until very recently, they ate rodents, insects, and birds along with human food scraps. Their guys can handle things we can’t. Domestic meat animals in developed countries rarely have the types of endoparasites and pathogens they used to, and humans still contract food borne illnesses mostly from contaminated produce and mishandled poultry. If anything, I suspect the reason not to give cats raw meat like beef or pork is because those aren’t meats cats evolved to eat. House cats didn’t take down pigs or cattle. They’re too rich and fatty. Similarly, you shouldn’t feed beef to Venus flytrap. It’s too rich for them, and the traps rot. I had one that ate buffalo wing meat, though.
@tookitogo4 жыл бұрын
Evil Sharkey What do you mean “until very recently”? Cats still eat rodents, insects, birds (and other critters, too, like rabbits (which aren’t actually rodents!), reptiles, fish, and amphibians). Cats worldwide, even in western countries, kill billions of songbirds every year. They do this even if they have food at home, since cats have a strong hunting instinct.

We thanked Mother Earth for the vegetables we ate. We thanked Father Sky for the air we breathed, and the waters which replenished our bodies. I never waste food, I eat till my fill and no more. I give thanks to the Creator for what I have every day. I respect all things. Life is filled with Balance. It is a necessary thing. Without it nature becomes imbalanced and we suffer for it. The same question can apply to the grain and wheat, potatoes and corn we harvest. What right do we have to just take what Mother Earth provides? It is balance. Things must die so other things can grow, renew. That is how it has always been.

@trychillipie4 жыл бұрын
Raw food diet really depends on the animal, the freshness of the meat and the place. From where I come from, I wouldn't trust how they handle meat. Unless you are confident that your dealers follow strict sanitation standards, I'd rather not risk it. Edit: I get that some of us grew up feeding raw food or even the food mentioned above that should not be given to cats and still they get to live long lives. Good for those cats. We all have our own ways of caring for our pet. You want to feed them raw diet, sure. For me, I don't just feed my pets dry kibble. I always cook them a balanced meal I can serve along side their kibble and supplements, as advised by my nutritionist and vet. Not because I treat them like humans, but because I am aware of their specific needs. We aren't making any less of our cats by not feeding them raw food. Cooked meat would make them just as happy and healthy with less risks.

cats are not humans. humans have evolved for thousands of years to eat cooked food and this means that our gums, teeth and guts are not capable of handling raw meat. we traded the ruggedness of our digestive system for other things because of our environment and way of life. cats have been feral hunters up to 100 years ago. they lived among humans but were not domesticated nor did they have specifically designed cat food. they ate pests like rats and mice that are carriers of all kinds of pathogens and their digestive and immune systems were and still are capable of taking care of them. so unless your local butcher is lacing the meat with toxins, even if the meat was on the floor or even in the toilet its perfectly safe for the cat to eat.
@Mishian4 жыл бұрын
@@gothic_oma Not really. The surface of the meat contains bacteria, but when you cook the surface, they die. That's why you can have a blue rare steak without getting sick. This does not apply for meat like chicken though. This is also the reason why ground beef should always be cooked properly, because when you grind it, the bacteria on the surface gets mixed in with the other bacteria free meat, and possibly contaminating it. This is also the reason why products that contain ground meat spesifically state that it needs to be cooked before consumption (like sausages, pre-cooked patties, meat loaf etc) But if butchers dropped meat around, I understand why your mother was concerned. That's not how it should be handled in developed countries...!

And I'm certain I saw 0 educational programs telling anyone to feed milk to cats), but the idea itself is silly. Why would a cat need milk? Milk is drank by baby animals in the wild, it's a meal specifically made for the young of that species. It doesn't make sense to give it to anyone else. Even most humans are lactose intolerant, it's something like 30% of adult humans that have enough lactase to digest milk, and those are typically concentrated around the areas where cattle have been farmed (i.e. western society). But anyways back to main point: Yes the media is full of non-educational information/false information/etc. No education should be based on entertainment.

@K.Marie1194 жыл бұрын
Clearly, giving them what their ancestors ate, raw meat, is going to be the best. I buy ground meat (that includes organ meat) that's specially prepared for cats and then mix in the recommended supplements. If you can't do that, for whatever reason, the next best thing is going to be freeze-dried versions that you reconstitute. And after that is commercial canned food that had zero fillers like potatoes, cranberries, etc. (Just because it says "grain free" doesn't mean it's not full of plant based foods that cats can't digest.) Ingredients to steer clear of include meat byproducts and rendered fat. (These are everything that gets discarded when manufacturing meat for human consumption) A quality canned food will have the first 5 ingredients be whole ingredients like chicken, liver, duck, rabbit, etc. There's debate about the safety of carageenan and guar gum/guaran in cats. You'll have to decide for yourself if you want to avoid it or not. The only hard and fast rule about what to feed your cat I would suggest every cat owner follow is do not make dry food their primary food. Cats do not posses a strong thirst deive like dogs and humans do. They've evolved to get the majority of their fluids from the meat they eat. Cats that are only fed dry food have been found to be chronically dehydrated and have much higher incidence of urinary and kidney problems. My parent's cat had suffered from cystitis and regular UTIs, even after being put on a "prescription" food. (Prescription pet foods are a gimmick. There is no special criteria or oversight that a company has to comply with call their food a "prescription." The only difference is the price and where they're sold.) A few weeks after switching her to wet canned food, the problem disappeared. It's been 6 or 7 years and she hasn't had a single problem since. We still give them some dry food to munch on if they get hungry between meal times, but it's limited to 1/2-3/4 cup per day. I'm on mobile at the moment but can post links later to all the resources I've scoured and follow for my own cats' nutrition. They're all written by DVMs and one comes from someone who worked for Menu Foods (the makers of Iams, Science Diet, Royal Canine, Pedigree, etc.)

@@K.Marie119 Hi. Thank you for all the information. My son has cats & one always has a runny stools & I've suggested after some research that he try changing them over to a raw diet specially produced for cats. I'm working on getting him to do it. Also thinking of changing my dog to a raw diet as the benefits are amazing so I've read. Appreciate you taking the time to write out all that information, so thank you again, much appreciated 😊

I would LOVE for you to make this a series! Thank you for this Jackson, I have a geriatric rescue cat I found on the streets (around 16 years old or so at the very least) who loves cheese, tomato products, lettuce, popcorn (I take the hulls off before giving him the pieces) and I've always wondered, WHY doesn't he like the cricket treats I get him? I assume he used to eat bugs/mice out when he was an "outsider" with no claws (whoever had him before me, or catch and release?) declawed him in a bad way and neutered him. His ear is clipped so I assume he was catch and release. I hope you're having a great week and thank you so much for your help, advice and being who you are! 💯😎👍

That poor boy. It is so cruel to declaw a cat, especially if your going to put it back or in the wild. They basically put him in a war zone with no weapons or tools. Lucky you found him.

I guess since all comments are about your bf, I'll tell something I've seen in cats, spayed female cats who have been socialized well are usually the way to go. my roommate got lucky with her adoption, as Dot(tiny lil squishy squishy now 2yo) is hands down one of the friendliest cats I have seen irl, granted I have seen very few but dot, she never fails to comfort her human. Goes and sits on her lap , walks around the laptop claiming both the digital contraption and her human with her scent, asks for pets and she even sulks when her human doesnt give enough attention! Find the right cat! Else you might have to put in a lot of work(whichis mostly patience and repetition if interactions to make them comfy with you, if you ask me its 80% coz of bad socialization and care during fostering.if you dont mind the work, any willing catwould be fine! (willing coz, some cats really just dont wanna be inside, please help them if you find one)

My big question is why there isnt rodent flavoured cat food. Or even "songbird mix". It seems like rodents would be easy to "farm" for cat food.
@felixhenson99264 жыл бұрын
Seems like the majority of cat food is made from leftovers from the animal agriculture industry, so basically anything humans won't eat or which doesn't have any other use gets sold to cat food companies. This means there's zero set up for cat food companies to get their main product. So it's unlikely that any would pay to set up to start farming and all of the associated (high!) costs of doing so.
@imaginationgal14 жыл бұрын
@@felixhenson9926 there is rodent farms set up for snake food already. They could expand their product range. And cats eat more often than snakes so it would be increased profits.
