When you said you would rather my cat eat the worst wet food than the best dry food, that really opened my eyes.

Same here. It made me realize you can improve your cat's diet even if you're on a tight budget. I switched one meal a day to wet. I'll do half a can with a little extra water mixed in. Splitting a can of the cheap wet foods, it's literally only 30 cents more per day. I've already noticed my cat urinating twice a day instead of once, and her poops are less gross lol. "Don't let perfect be the enemy of good." I love Jackson's videos!

worst wet food usually does not have meat in it at all; thus, worsening digestion system of a cat. And even it has any 'meat', it is not meat, it is feathers, claws etc. And I agree that feeding a cat with dry food only is not good for health. For example, I divide the daily portion into 2 parts: dry holistic and good wet food + meat sticks 2 times a week. Our vet doctor says this approach is good, so I keep it. Of course, fresh water in several places in the house.

A good tip for people looking at "what food to get" is to look at what country the food was produced in. Singapore, New Zealand, Canada all have higher restrictions for the quality of ingredients put into their food. That's not to say all US brands are terrible but it is something that can definitely help narrow it down.

That's an excellent suggestion. Not just canned, but raw as well. I'm interested in raw but concerned about contamination if it thaws out somewhere in the transportation process. My vet said she's had several cases of a cat getting sick from bad raw. They've been domesticated long enough that they don't have the ability to fight off e-colli and other bacteria as their wild relatives do.

The comment about cats reversing diabetes by changing to wet food is absolutely accurate! I had a cat 20 yrs ago who was diagnosed with diabetes at age 10. I got her off the dry food immediately and switched her to a wet food diet with very very low carbs…we got her blood sugars down to normal levels and got her insulin down to 1/2 unit once a day from 3 units 2x a day. That was the only change… I also tested her using a human glucometer to only give her insulin when she really needed it and in the amount she actually needed versus just blindly shooting her up 2x a day as the vets would have had me do back then. Also my old vet was trying to get her to switch to hills science diet DM dry food. When I looked- the carb levels were as high as the original kibble I was feeding her and the ingredients list was terrible, so I didn’t change her diet to what they were recommending. I managed her diabetes until she passed at age 16 1/2 not from diabetes. Thank you for this awesome video. I wish back when I first had my kitty that I knew then what I know now about food…

I’m incredibly thankful for this video. In 2020 I had to put down my 7 year old cat who had FIV and diabetes and was overweight. Vet recommended me an expensive diabetic kibble, and taught me to give my cat insulin several times a day. Nothing was working, sugar levels were over 700 and my cat was suffering so I put him down. I’m now adopting two kitties, a Ragdoll and Maine Coon in June and happened to watch this video of you saying wet food was the answer. I wish I came across this video last year while my cat was alive, I wish I thought to try a wet food only diet... But now I’m so grateful that now I know to set my kittens on the right path, to stay away from dry food. THANK YOU!

I have been feeding my cats "high quality" dry food for most of their lives; I have always considered myself a responsible owner; this video convinced me to change, and change fast (well, as fast as you can be when it comes to switching a cat's diet!). I now realize that no matter how "high quality" a dry food may seem, it's not the way to go. I can't make up for lost time that I spent feeding dry food, but I will certainly make it so they never eat it again!

Same! But the likely response is that cats in the wild don't have vets or toothbrushes and they still eat a meat-only diet. I think the old advice that cats should eat some dry food to help scrape the plaque off their teeth is either perpetuated by kibble makers or it's bunk advice. Probably the best advice is to take kitty to the vet for a cleaning - plus they need annual physicals just like humans do!

yes this is unfortunately because veterinarians aren't nutritionists and when they go through schooling, their textbooks say things like, "for this we recommend Science Diet for ___ disease." @@PassionofDance212 ALS food is more of a marketing term. It just has the extra, necessary nutrients for those life stages. Kittens need a lot of omega 3s/DHA to support healthy brain development as well as a higher fat content so their bodies can rapidly grow. Seniors can't process protein like they once did so they need more of it as well has more fiber to aid with healthy digestion. If you have to feed an ALS food, thats ok. But if you have the choice, I highly suggest tending to their specific needs for the happiest, healthiest cat 😁

They eat two small meals a day (breakfast and dinner) but in between, they don’t want anything else. The most important thing (especially since we live in a compact condo) is that the litter rarely smells. The raw diet makes everything so much better for all of us, although it’s shocking how many vets try to push their dried foods on us. I’ve found a good vet now who is on board with the diet. (Amazing, this is what they prescribe.) I did my own reading. Padfoot thought raw was poisoning him, so I ended up feeding him a good quality canned, and he never had a return of the crystals (they are said to be more likely to get after getting once). If Jackson reads this, I think it would be good for him to talk about how they use these prescription diets. From what I understand they can be just as bad as what any other dry.

It's just so obvious now in hindsight, but no one said anything.

Prescription diet dry food is bad.... prescription diet wet food is okay. Not great but better than any dry food and low quality canned food. Why did I say the food is okay? Even though it contains grain, the phosphorus level is lower than other commercial canned food. You need to look at phosphorus, magnesium and sodium level when you buy cat food as these minerals can deteriorate the kidney. Avoid fish since they can cause hyperthyroid.

These videos have been so helpful!! I just adopted a 4 year old kitty from someone about a month ago. The people I adopted him from free-fed dry food and gave wet food only once in awhile as a treat. I've always been a wet food feeder and started feeding him four smaller meals of wet food throughout the day and while I've left out some dry, he's barely touched it and seems very happy with his new meal plan. I'll probably get rid of the dry altogether and just give a small treat in the evenings before bed. Your other video on how to read a can label really helped as well and I feel much more educated on what to look for! Thank you so much!!!

Just started my babies on all wet food katkins style! After struggling with urinary issues resulting in him having to be cathetered 😭! Even with the “prescription” dry cat food it wasn’t working for him and he would still have horrible issues. Switched him to katkins even when my vet told me not to and told me it would kill him. Overnight he was better just by his personality. Got a ph testing litter to make sure he’s still balanced and he looks perfect. He seems like he feels so much better and all his uti symptoms immediately went away!! Even my mean anxious girl cat immediately was so much nicer and calmer all the time. It hasn’t been very long so I’m excited to see if my 2 overweight cats loose weight on all wet food.

Thank you so much for this video series Jackson! As others have pointed out your "I'd rather your cat eat the worst wet food than the best dry food" statement was a real attention getter and it inspired us to begin removing dry food from our kittens diet. Our kitten was 100% on board with this change and as soon as we started adding more wet food she refused to eat any more of the dry. We thought this transition would take a few weeks but ended up only being a few days. We're now about 1 week in to 100% wet and we're surprised at how many things have not only changed but changed for the better. The "zoomies" are a good example - these are now mostly right on schedule which makes them so much more enjoyable and easier to manage.

A miracle is taking place in my home. For the last four years I tried to switch my cat to wet food now and again. She has always loved kibble way better, wouldn't even touch some wet food. After the last video, I was like: that's it. We are switching, no matter how long it takes. It hasn't even been that long, but for two days she leaves the kibble and prefers the wet food! I didn't think this would ever happen. I am so happy for her health! I now know she only likes the pieces or strips, no pate or mousse. And only sauce or bouillon, no jelly. And she seems to like chicken a lot and sometimes fish. Well, my princess, whatever you want, as long as it's decent quality wet food. The kibble is out!

@@GeeklingNo1 I tried the patés and the chunks too. Just hates cans I think because they taste not as fresh. If I boil meat + organs for human consumption (without salt or any spices) and give him a morsel, he is all over it. Not the can though, even if the can (i.e. Almo nature) has exactly the same thing. I tasted a little of his food myself (all the flavors), and found out that likely it is due to the "stale" taste of canned food compared to freshly cooked. (Btw Jackson Galaxy is totally right about kibbles tasting fantastic - depends on the brand, but the higher end ones really taste like low-sodium meat-flavored chips!)

Great video! :) There was just one little thing missing: The calcium-phosphor ratio in cat food. There is one German organization (Stiftung Warentest) who test different things which is available on the market. They always do laboratory tests of cat foods, and I was quite surprised by their last 2-year tests....The food I used to feed my cats (Mac´s, a German raw meat canned cat food) contains way too much phosphor, which can lead to kidney problems. :/ So I stopped giving that certain food to my cats and started buying a really worldwide famous market food (Which got one of the bests review from Stiftung Warentest). It´s not the best cat food on the market concerning the meat and wheat content, but it´s still better than too much phosphor. :/ I noticed that my cats aren´t throwing up anymore and that their fur got really nice and shiny. Also the last 2 blood tests at the vet showed that everything is as it should be.....Like our vet told me: "Your cat Jack is a very veeeeeery healthy cat for his age" (He is 10 years old). The only complaint the vet had been the teeth of Jack, but he had a surgery on 8th of December and now the teeth are healthy again too. :) But yeah, always check the dry-matter content of a food and the phosphor-calcium ratio. :)

@@nsavar5864 I´m feeding currently Kitekat and Whiskas. Kitekat was on the 3rd best spot at Stiftung Warentest and Whiskas on the 7th. The first 2 spots and the 4 in between are products which aren´t available in Finland (Where I live). :) At first I was really skeptical about Kitekat and whiskas, cause those aren´t brands I would have fed to my cats in the first place cause of the ingredients, but I gave it a try and noticed right away that my cats got healthier (No throwing up anymore, the fur is soft and shiny etc.) and our vet said that the blood levels are more than good now. So I´m definitely continue giving those brands to my cats, as long as I don´t notice anything negative. :)

I feed this to my cats, they are doing very well on it. HOwever, Stella and Chewy's has been criticized for having too much bone in it, so I also feed them some canned and a bit of homemade food as well. I put it in the slow cooker and cook it, I don't feed it raw as it seemed to make my one cat very sick but when it's cooked he does just fine and absolutely loves it.) I know older kittens are every six hours, but what about mature cats? I sleep 8 hours minimum, how does someone handle nights? if we are supposed to feed them every six hours. I don't like the idea of leaving out wet food over night to go bad. I recently down-sized and have transitioned my cat from Indoor/Outdoor to Indoor only, and she doesn't seem interested in toys or playing. Most, if not all, Applaws wet food does not have sufficient nutrients for a balanced diet. Read the label. They don't include any bad additives like grains or coloring, but they also don't include the vitamins and amino acids a cat needs. If it says "for intermittent or supplemental feeding," it should only amount to 10% of diet. (A natural whole prey diet includes organs, etc.) I learned this the hard way.

Regarding variety: our 8-ish year old family cat is a very picky eater who usually only eats a certain flavour of wet food. It can get very challenging, especially when the manufacturer changes their recipe. So when I adopted my own cats (Mama cat and 4 kittens) I immediately put them on a rotation of about 20 different flavours of wet food. Eventually eliminated a few they didn't seem to like as much, am now down to 12-16 flavours I feed day-to-day and a few special treat ones. I also like to feed cat soup as a snack/treat about once or twice a week. They really seem to be enjoying the variety.

Food is such an important topic when it comes to cats. Last year my cat was sick for almost 2 months with a UTI and my Vet told me that it was most likely caused by her diet. Most cat food doesn't have nearly enough quality meat that cats need and companies often will add sugar to their food so that cats will get hooked on the food more easily so that owners will buy more of their product. She said that most cat food is basically equivalent to cat junk food and will cause harm to your cats health in the long run and have them develop kidney and teeth disease early on from all the sugar, additives and wheat that doesn't benefit their health. I was seriously heartbroken when i heard of these tactics that companies have, to trick owners into buying their products and ever since then switched to a brand that is only slightly more expensive, but doesn't have any additives, grain and is 68% made up of pure meat and my cats have never been better. I would rather pay a little bit more on their food beforehand, than all the bills at he vet when they come down sick, not to forget that being sick reduces the quality of your cats life and sometimes also goes unnoticed. Ever since i had that incident and learned about this, i've been actively sharing this info to all cat owners i know, because often times brands will make us feel good about buying their brand and tell us how good their product is for our pets, when in reality we're basically feeding them junk food everyday and setting them up for health issues. So please, I know some people don't have the budget to spend a lot of money on cat food, but please try look for food that has no sugar or salt, taste enhancers, grains, conservation additives and most importantly look for a high meat percentage (at least 60%) and little to no fish- or meatmeal which is often used so they can use less meat to save money on production. It might not be possible to find a food that fits your budget and checks off all these things, but i hope you at least look at the ingredients and reflect on what you're actually feeding your cats, because it often does more harm than we expect from the way brands advertise it. In the end tho, i guess Jackson still says it all, bad wet food is still better than good dry food.

@@watchinyoulol I don't live in the US so i can't recommend any US brands :/ But the brand i buy (i'm from germany) is called Premiere Meat Menu. It's not too expensive and after getting used to it my cats love it now. Also a fun fact or rather tip: At the beginning your cat will generally not enjoy the new food (i mean imagine eating fast food and sweets your entire life and suddenly people are trying to introduce a plate of vegetable to you, you probably wouldn't enjoy it at first either 😂) but after a while they enjoy it and i'm not sure if you know the issue where cats will only lick the sauce of their foods and leave the meat, that issue will be solved as well since they'll usually only lick the sauce because that's the sugary part.

@@itskimik I've noticed that! I live in canada, which likely has the same food as the US. I'll try searching for that or alternatives. In fact, I'm getting my first cat soon and i want to do it right. Thank you for your reply :)

I agree. I'd add to try to avoid food colorings and preservatives.

Thank you for these videos, I did always wondered how good could be wet food vs dry food (I think a natural diet is the best option)

I am so glad you made this video because I was told from petco vet to feed my cat only dry food so this helped me to find something to keep my little kitten healthy

I have always fed high quality food but my cat vomits every time I feed wet food (we only purchase from a natural pet store and took recommendations from our vet). He also is less likely to eat it regularly. He loves his fussy cat dry food-- aggressively. Thoughts or suggestions welcome... please be nice. We've also try the freeze dried pellets that you re-hydrate into meat(?) and up it came.

Yes! It was recommended by my vet that my cats eat dental kibble to clean their teeth. Also, they are on a urinary diet since my male developed crystals. Those cans are $2 each and they share two per day.

We were feeding wet food only but the allergies wouldn’t stop. Our one boy was throwing up multiple times a week, if not a day, and his fur was so coarse compared to his brother’s. We switched to a raw diet and it’s so much better now - no vomiting episodes and both our boys are silky smooth now ♥️ Our allergy boy sniffed a bit of canned food my parents offered their dog and gagged, safe to say he won’t be switching back lol

Looking forward to the next part when he will talk about grains and no grain food. Not even the vets seems to understand the difference.

How worried ahould we be about chemicals in the lining of cans? We humans are recommended to stay away from certain chemicals in cans, but it's never mentioned what is used in the cans for cat food.

I’m getting a kitten for the first time and I’ve been obsessing over this channel lmao. My kitten is still at my friends house that’s giving him to me and he’s been eating dry food so now I’m like stressing about having to get him used to wet food!!
