I think he's meouwing everytime he enters into a territory shared with other cats. If no one answers, he can be sure not to get in any trouble. In fact, Ros is very clever! He's avoiding territorial fights. And he regularily tastes the smell of other cats that have passed before him. If it tastes too fresh, he changes direction.

that's actually what most animals are doing, they make their species noises to check if there are others nearby and they smell everything to check who/what has been there. however some animals use this to rather get into trouble rather than avoid trouble.
