@@GoodOptometryMorning I am 80 got my cataract done 3 weeks ago. I usually get very concerned about anything regarding health matters , but on this occasion I was not excited or worried in the least , during surgery I experienced some pain on 3 occasions , and after I went home my eye was painful until I took 2 pain killers , the good part 1, I would not hesitate to under go this operation again , 2 my vision was crystal clear the minute I got off the operating table, 3 in the day after the operation I had no pain whatsoever just a little discomfort at times 4 I regret not having it done 4 years previously , the only thing you require to consider is that the nhs procedure only corrects the lens problem , so they are only prepared to pay for that, where on the private side if you pay up to £3,750 an eye they have a big range of lenses to chose from & have the ability to fine tune your requirements where you may not require to wear glasses ,

This is the best video on cataracts that I've seen. The verbal explanations & use of visual examples makes for easier understanding of what cataracts are all about. I was unsure as to whether I had cataracts or not, that is, until I saw this video. As a result, I've just made an appointment with my optometrist to discuss my options. Many thanks for this great informative video Michael.

Thank you so very much for an EXCELLENT explanation of cataracts! I really needed this bc I’ve gradually noticed those exact changes in my vision! Especially concerning colors! I spend lots of time painting landscapes and making colorful beaded jewelry and now I know why I’m losing the ability to see colors with the vibrancy and saturation that I used to. My husband has made comments about some of my paintings telling me that the sky, flowers, or grasses I had painted during a Plein Air painting session were more muted and less vibrant than they actually were. That also explains why I need little flash lights all over the house! And I’ve experienced other symptoms you’ve mentioned and thanks to you, now I know what’s going on with my eyes! I’m so grateful to you!❤

Thank you ! Finally someone that talks the talk in a way that "we the people" can understand. I was told that I have a very weird type of cataract. my right eye cataract extends from right to left, and the cataract on my left eye extends left to right. Between the two, I have one full eye. However, the cataract on my right eye seems to be growing by the second. Yes, I totally suffer from most of the systoms you mention. Sad but true. I'm totally scared to have surgery. I've heard horror stories! I hope you address laser vs manual surgery. I'll check. Thank you for a GREAT video!

Excellent information! I had my left eye done earlier this year and I'll be having the right one done soon. I've worn glasses for myopia since I was about 8 and I'm now 73 - and the result in my left eye was astonishing - life-changing even. I went from -6.25 to 'eagle-eyed' - my logmar score since the op. is around 0.22 to 0.23, which is fantastic. Brilliant work that you do.

I have been having trouble with my vision and as I am a diabetic, I saw my Optometrist last week and was diagnosed with cataracts. No explanation was given of what cataracts were just that I needed surgery to fix it and a prescription for eyeglasses for my worsening astigmatism was given. I told her that let me think on it. So, I was given a follow-up appointment in 6 months, I thank you for the clear and precise explanation about cataracts. I can make an intelligent decision now about my eyes. FYI: she said that my diabetes had not affected my eyes.

@@GoodOptometryMorning : I had a wonderful experience. I wish everyone to have my experience. My doctor was a rock star 2 times so far. My vision went back 20 years and hope it stays that way for another 20. I spent over 100 hours on research. Made my doctor measure 3 times and told him 3 separate times what I want and what I expect. Paid for everything he said will help him and give me the highest chance of success. Did everything I was told to do and made sure to discuss this with the head doctor above us all. My results have been brilliant so far, just like they've been for millions of people this year. But as we all know there are no guarantees in life and that's why I let the doctor do anything he wants as long as it increased my chances.

I went to look for information on the symptoms of cataracts, and Ifound much of this very descriptuve, but in a very helpful way.. Unfortunately, in trying to find out what was going on with my own eyesight, it took the response of several friends and acquaintances who have had cataracts, who seemed to say similar things which matched my own experience so far. I saw none of this mentioned in this video. The most profound comment made was seeing a grayish shadow in the affected eye. It blocked the center of vision. It seemed each person had a different size or area size which was affected, sometimes the shadow is larger, sometimes smaller. Mine is centered right in the middle of my vision In the left eye. It also appears, no matter the size, they also stated seeing what appears to be lightning or swirling lights on the edges, and sometimes right in the middle of this gray shadow. Once they went to see their ophthalmologists, they were diagnosed with cataracts. While I've learned both eyes could be affected, currently it is only what I see in my left eye, and like others they had it in one eye first, and eventually had to have the other replaced (lens). I am thankful there is a remedy. The cataract, while in one eye, affects my overall vision. After all, we are two-eyed creatures. 😉 Thank you for allowing me to share this.

I am 82 years old and was diagnosed about 5 years ago with the beginnings of cataract in one eye. Recently I returned to the ophthalmologist about improving my glasses. Apparently the issue was my cataract getting worse and in the other eye also. I have a couple questions that I hope someone with the right info can answer: I still see well enough to drive regularly and read etc. but I wonder at what point do I move to have cataract surgery? Also, I have felt a granular feeling in one eye occasionally for 3 months, is that related to the cataract? I have been using castor oil around that eye, is that just coincidental?

So my opthomologist did cataract surgery on my eyes 2 years ago. I'm now wondering if I even needed it. Did not have the symptoms except dry eyes & glare at night. Neither of these changed after surgery. I was told I had uveitis before the cateracts therefore 3-4 injections in each eye BEFORE he said cataracts. I still have sarcoid uveitis & he says my vision will not get any better. It's extremely frustrating & depressing.

When I was in third grade, I could see blades of grass on a moonless night. Some artificial light. The last time I drove home at night in the rain was a nightmare. I couldn't see the lines on the road with the oncoming lights, and it was a curved road. 30 mile drive. I swore I would never drive in the rain at night again. But shortly thereafter, my 36 year old car gave up and I declined to fix it. Sometimes I take a taxi at night, and I don't know how the driver can see. I don't like driving anyway. I think the speed limit should be 30. I'm not 70 yet, but this has been going on for years. But now lightng appears a notch lower.

I understand what you’re saying. I wonder if it’s just that newer vehicles have different types of headlights? I’ve never liked driving in the dark, but it seems to be worse now. I’m 65 so have just been attributing the change to age, newer headlights, and my old car’s foggy lens cover.

@@heidimeigs5192 Good point. I’ve just turned 66. And I also can’t cope with night driving like I use to. Mainly because of opposing vehicles head lights. Perhaps that’s normal at our age. Such a great video! Thank you so much for providing such important information. You effectively summarized and explained symptoms related to cataract. I’ve had double vision for some time now. I’m extremely near sighted and when I had my eyes checked, I was told I had developed cataract in my right eye, but it’s not bad enough to have a surgery. I was sent to see a neuro-ophthalmologist who made me to wear a temporary prism on the right lens of my glasses. Then in the recent weeks, I have started to feel my right lens is cloudy or foggy, as if there were some steam. Also I feel something got in my right eye and I keep rubbing it to do away that. I also see halo around traffic lights or street lights, etc. I don’t know if all of these have to do with the effect of the prism or the fact that the cataract in my right eye is getting worse. But the cataract surgeon says I should wait to do the surgery and get my double vision corrected first by getting a paire of prism glasses first. Btw, I also have astigmatism. Your video makes me think I should deal with the cataract first. So should I go get cataract surgery first or get prism glasses first which are very expensive. I hope you and your audience will provide some input. Btw, I’m 65, too young to develop cataract? Thank you again, doctor.

Serious question: why don’t ophthalmologists perform lens change during vitrectomy surgery? It’s almost guaranteed that vitrectomy surgery speeds up the cataract formation. I went through vitrectomy surgery in January, and cataract surgery 9 months later for a dense cataract. The cataract surgery was 100 times more painful than the vitrectomy surgery. Make it make sense…..

The general philosophy is not to make any procedure more complicated than it needs to be...that reduces the risk of complications.

A hint for optometrists: if you have a patient on your "will call" list, do not send that patient a text message. No way a cataeacrive patient can read #6 black font on a white screen. If you send a text message, send it to a friend if the patient who can read it. A hint for patients: get on a "will call" list to get an appointment if someone cancels. Call the office every two or three days to ask where you are on the will call list. I got on the list, got examined and got a surgery appointment in two weeks this way. A friend got an appointment to get examined in November by not doing this.

Can chronic reactivation of herpes virus cause cataracts? I have all the symtoms and are only 40 yeard old. Every time I get a relapse of neuropathies I get red eyes or like pins and needles in the eyes just like on the skin. Pretty subtile. But black look grey, I see halos around lights, starbursts, light seem to "bleed" out in dark enviroments so that it looks like the eniroment looks like it filled with fog/mist.

It seems every time you go to the dentist you need a root canal. Every time an old person goes to the eye dr you need cataract surgery. It happened to me and I don’t have any problems w my eyes. $$$$$$

I'm 53 and have cataracts. According to my reg eye Dr they have worsened from July 2022 to Oct 2022. But the surgeon I was sent to said he wouldn't do surgery just because of my age.

Hi Betty But you’re just a kid!!! I’m 71 and just a few months ago, my Doctor removed my cataracts in 2 separate procedures . It was a doddle! And best of all, I now have perfect eyesight for the first time in my life: before surgery, my eyesight was - 5 so I was extremely short sighted. Now, I can see perfectly, no need for spectacles . My advice : why not change your eye doctor?? . At 53 you’re still a kid. Best of luck Anne
