I took my dad for his surgery about 10 years ago he was in his 80s. He said it was a miracle surgery and told me to get it done! I laughed and said I don’t have cataracts. Well, now I do, I’m not even 60 but am looking forward to not having to wear glasses or contacts. I won’t mind reading glasses if I have to.

I had my first cataract removal surgery on April 7th, and had already been diagnosed with dry eye syndrome. My left eye was drier after surgery and I just had to use my wetting drops a few times per day. I had astigmatism and a TORIC lens implant was used to correct the astigmatism. My eyesight in Left eye is 20/20 now. I can read regular print. I’m hoping my Right eye surgery which is in 2 days is just as good.I have worn glasses since age 3. Imagine not having to wear glasses after wearing them for 62 years! I’m excited for surgery on Thursday, the 21st of April, 2022.

I was scared to get both eyes done at one time, so I only did the worst one first. Ones in the room the procedure took 10 minutes and recovery was immediate. I was so sad I didn’t do both at the same time but then Covid hit and it took me two years to go back. Got the second eye done. Everything went great. Couldn’t be happier

I had my cataract surgery back in my 50s. I will soon be 81. It took several visits before the doctor was able to get all the info needed. I opted to get normal close vision as I was an avid reader and an engineer working on both drawings and computers. The first surgery used a hard plastic lens and was done only numbing the eye. It was described to me as it was done … fascinating! The second was a foldable plastic lens that had 3 metal tabs to lock it in place. Unfortunately, this meant that I can never have an MRI. I appreciate everything you commented on and was surprised that my doctor and I discussed nearly all those items back in the day.

Street lights had a rainbow circle around each. There was no pain at all with the surgery. I will have left eye next week. You won’t believe how bright everything looks. Yeah!

i have dry eye disease and i was SO happy my eye doc is fixing it for me during surgery.... i wish I knew they could do this years ago... it's such a big problem. yea.. thanks for sharing these tips. it helps everyone do better for success. Insurance needs to start paying up for those who need better lens. its so unfair for people who can not afford lenses that can give you better eye site than standards that will NOT give someone better vision. that part when it comes to someones vision is terrible. Insurance does not pay for a BETTER eye site. sad cause vision is priceless i know. however so many can not afford to finance it or and lots of reasons why they can not come up with an additional 4-5 grand out of pocket. so many who go through this because they can not pay MORE out of pocket.

I have keratoconus and bad dry eye in both eyes and was very short sighted. I had cataracts on the back surface of both lenses. The surgeon put me on a number of eyedrops for a couple of weeks before surgery to settle things down. I then had the worst eye done first and the other two weeks later using toric lenses. My distance vision is now better than I've had for 40 years, even with glasses. I can also manage most up close tasks and wear glasses only for fine work. My biggest problem now is remembering I'm no longer short sighted. Lol

I did everything the Doctors said and my Cataract Operation has been 100% successful !!!! It was 10 years ago that I had the Operation on my left eye !!! I am 68 yrs old and now I can still read the bottom line on the Chart with both eyes, and not wearing glasses, which I only use for Reading !!!! The one thing I did was to get a pair of armoured safety glasses, which are used on Bench Drills and Grinders !!!! They have air holes to ventilate and they won't fall off !!!! And they are comfortable in bed !!!! I don't need glasses to drive etc !!!! I was practically blind in my left eye, with foggy out of focus vision. Now when I look at stars at night with each eye they look like Pin Points of light !!!! But I know a lot of people who messed up their operation !!!! One woman would not wear a guard over her eye, and she bumped her eye and the lens moved. Another woman would not use her eyedrops and got an eye infection !!!! And a man went to work the next day as a street cleaner and got dirt in his eye, and his lens moved when he lifted his street cleaning bin up on to the Pavement !!!! Some people really are Daft !!!!

I had my cataracts removed about three years ago. I went into the surgery with a -15 diagnosis. The surgeon gave me an option you did not mention. I could have one eye corrected for distance viewing and the other for reading. I actually chose to have both done for distance. The surgeon was most meticulous about the calculations and had his staff assess the data three times before he was satisfied with the recommendation. He chose to do the operations two weeks apart. I was absolutely blown away when the bandage was removed from the first eye and I could read the very bottom line of the eye chart without assistance! The second operation produced the same result! According to the surgeon the result is I have vision equal to the top four percent in Australia. Three years later I can still read the bottom line. I have had no complications but yes I do need reading glasses. Let me tell you it makes a great deal of difference to your driving confidence particularly at night and I can now be sure whether the speed sign indicates 30,60 or 80 before I actually drive past it! Best thing I ever did (Also allows me to see a tennis ball before it gets to the net when playing tennis!)

Donald Wood: I sure would be grateful if you share what precataract surgery testing/measurements were done if you have the Names of tests/measurements of what all your Dr did. I recently went to an ophthalmologist in Maryland who did what I consider a TON of tests, some of which were hard to endure. One, I was looking into some device that shown Bright Light into my eye (one at a time) and Dr kept saying, "Don't blink/don't move" I've always understood that one should never look at the sun and always were UV lenses when out in the sun. These tests, several of which seemed redundant, took 2+ hours to perform. I got to wondering if the tests were Damaging my eyes and still worry that could have happened. Thanks

I've had cataract surgery on my right eye, and it was a piece of cake! I don't remember a thing! 2 cataracts were removed. I could see perfectly with this eye for a couple of months, then the shape of my eye changed making me have astigmatism. As soon as I get my other eye done, I can get get one contact lens to address the astigmatism, or reading glasses to address that issues and the ability to read.

Greetings from Colorado! I just discovered you today. I've had two cataract surgeries within the past month, and I'm amazed at how much my vision has improved! I had one excellent optometrist for 33 years, but then he decided to retire. He had mentioned that I had cataracts starting already. So I decided to find an excellent ophthalmologist to be my regular eye doctor, and I found one. So when the time came for surgery, he already knew all about my eyes. The actual surgery was amazingly easy. I had not realized how bad my vision had become over the years. And all the colors I can see now! I am so thankful! And thank you so much for the great information you share! I wish I had seen it before my surgeries. Take care!

Just had surgery 4/26. I was nervous..scalpel & eyeball don't sound good together to me! My Dr assured me I would feel nothing. Easiest surgery I've ever had!!! I was aware, but didn't care. Don't recall them putting the lid retractors in place. Felt something cool flood over my eye a couple times, saw colors, then heard "we're done." They sat the head of the bed up, gave me water, got me up in a wheelchair & wheeled me out. No nausea, no pain..2 weeks later, I am fine & dandy! Ask your Dr at the next visit if he can show you a sample lens...surprisingly tiny!

I'd be grateful to learn what tests/measurements you had pre cataract surgery as I have to get this eventually and believe some ophthalmologist go overboard on what is appropriate test/measurements and I just do not wish to be subjected to unnecessary med bills or testing that can perhaps do damage or diminish my eye health. Thanks

To be honest, I don't know what all they measured. But, I figure I only have 2 eyes, so do what you must. They found that I also have a macular pucker..too much to explain, but for now, I'm leaving that alone. I know there was refracting, not covered by my insurance...about $300 in office for things not covered, & I had to go in right B4 surgery for measurements so they knew what lens to use. They also checked eye pressure before surgery, the day after, & a week after. The post op visits were all covered in the original cost/billing to insurance. My insurance also has a $1200 ambulatory copay when I go to an outpatient surgery center. That sucked, but not Dr's fault. Still worth it for how well I can see now. Will have the other eye done when needed, but satisfied for now. Regardless of cost, please be at ease...I was pretty freaked out & I felt silly afterwards...nothing to it, really. Best wishes!

My eye is quite good and probably have to change for new Glasses. But he said still a little way to go.He put Acrylic Lense in.He did a Great Job and was not Scared. As only Operation i have had is a Neck Fusion thru my Work ,Doing a lot of Phone Work. The Nurses were Lovely to me.Stayed at my Daughters place for a week and then went home.I would recommend to have Cateract Surgery. 😇🦋

Just came across your tips. I have Birdshot Chorioretanopathy and the side effects of my medication caused cataract problems. My Opthamologist has now recommended doing the surgery. He wasn't that worried when his prescription dosage was too high and wasn't listening to me. My cataract problem has gotten worse but I have refused an operation because I don't trust him. Thank you for explaining things my Opthamologist hasn't even mentioned.

Hello, I had an operation 15 days ago on right eye. I do not see clearly. Can it be undone? Also the surgeon wants to do the left eye. I refuse. She said I will go blind. I thought my first step is to talk to the optometrist who prescribed the operation. Right? Thank you

After my post, l did have my cataract surgery because l wasn't able to do everyday things because of my vision. Had both eyes done at the same time. Success for my vision returning to what it was before the start of Birdshot treatment. I religiously did the post-op drops and avoided getting soap & shampoo in my eyes. My near-sightedness has reverted to far-sightedness, corrected with reading glasses. So all good. Information is paramount, so gleen as much as you can before doing the op and post op, of course, follow instructions to the T!

I have always had dry eyes and could never wear contacts. At age 68 I was given drops which burn for glaucoma. Soon after I started developing cataracts. I noticed that they looked like calluses on my eyes and asked my doc if they could be caused by my lids rubbing on my dry eyes. He said no. I have to buy the saline with no preservatives for my dry eye so that the drops don’t burn. They come in separate vials and it’s a ridiculous $18 a box for about 1/2 oz of salt water. So I asked my doctor what the effect of preservatives in Lumigan is on living cells like my eyeballs and he had no answer. But my annoyingly logical brain is telling me the unnecessary preservatives our bodies come in contact with all day in soaps and foods and medications are killing cells……..?

Very informative. Had both eyes done for cataract and doc. never mentioned some of this. It all worked out well anyway. Very easy. Was extremely nearsighted since age 11. Five years later still close to 20/20. I do have to use reading glasses for very teeny, tiny print but not computer. But that is inevitable with old age anyway, as before when I was wearing contact lenses, I began to need glasses to read up close. One "side effect" that was very prominent is that colors really pop now, especially blues which are beautifully vivid. Didn't realize how bad it was until after I had the first eye done.

After cataract surgeries in Jan 2020, I was diagnosed with double vision. I assumed it was a result of the surgery but the double vision specialist told me I had a superior oblique (or fourth optical nerve) palsy which brought on the double vision. We tried prism decals in my progressives, but that affected my reading, so had to also use reading glasses. Another specialist said he could do a surgery to relax the eye muscle but i decided to first try new progressives with a stronger reading portion and a decal over that portion to negate the prism at the bottom. We’ll see if that works. I had dry eyes and blepharitis before surgery but it was not discussed prior to surgery. I was just using Natural tear drops and cleaning with baby shampoo. Such an ongoing ordeal...wish I had waited longer to have the cataracts removed. I’m 71 but can no longer read for enjoyment, eyes strain and feel tired and achy.

I went to my first appointment with my surgeon. I told him that I was doing the dry eye drops 3X per day, and using eye lid wipes twice a day, to prep for my surgeries. He shocked me by not seeming to know or care about what I was talking about. I cancelled the follow-up appointment, and found another surgeon. 😷

I am not actually suprised by this. Many surgeonos don;t spend time educcating on this....you are more likely to hear it from your referring optometrist. The surgeons that are more concerned about your final refractive outcome are more likely to mention it.

@@GoodOptometryMorning I have been to 3 eye surgeons to get measured for cataracts/IOL implants, and not one of them mentioned ANY of your suggestions! And one of those had operated on me for my cornea (dry eye-connected?) and I also told all of them I'd had a retinal tear many years ago. All of them simply tried to sell me premium lenses (though my referring optometrist had told me that, in her opinion, the premium lenses are not ready for "prime time") so I was very disappointed, as that's what I want (non-premium lenses.)

@@selma7818 I had to get a pair of glasses made , and had to wear them for 2 weeks prior to surgery , and took out the right lens from the glasses after that surgery , for the intervening week between surgeries , I could use either eye , but not both at the same time due to different focal points . Close surgical dates ( a week ) because of SUPER strong corrections in each eye. Don't be afraid!! It does NOT hurt , took about 6 min. Each eye . Just remember , when during surgery , the Doctor says " LOOK AT THE LIGHT " just do it , and things will be fine!! " You'll SEE what I mean , and follow ALLdirections concerning the various eyedrops. Hope you see this message before Monday! Thank you for your presentation, I am a diabetic also suffer with dry eyes, I had surgery on the left eye before the second lockdown in England, the surgeon I had was great he made me feel relaxed and explained that I have a stigmatism and I have large eyes, just to say I am due to have the second One done but am now worried because over the passed few week I found the dry eye is getting worse especially first thing in the morning. I am due for surgery at 7:30am Monday, I have wanted this op for a long time as wearing glasses is giving me a lot of problems with one eye done and the other to be done I am straining to see the computer and to read. I have tried Viscotrear and they don’t seem to work, I feel I am going to cancel as it maybe best for me in the long term.
