Leslie, I know what happened! I looked at some other recipes AND they all called for SELF RISING FLOUR, bake at 350 deg. for 1 hour. While watching I kept waiting to see what type of leavening your were going to use and you didn't use any. 😎

I agree. I Googled it and all of the recipes say "flour", which of course is plain flour, no baking powder or soda and the cakes look like Leslie's. I don't see how anyone could make a good cake with this recipe.

Since using all purpose flour probably needed baking powder and salt.

Leslie, I looked up this "cake" online. The picture looked just like yours, but I wouldn't call this cake. 😊 Another recipe called it a custard cake. If anyone wants coconut cake there are many good recipes. Like you, I have a wonderful husband (57 yrs) so I know what kind of cake he likes. I'm glad you posted this - shows everything doesn't turn out perfect when we cook!

I haven't been commenting a lot lately but I just realized something... I think the reason you would catch your husband is because they don't care about how you cook.They love you for yourself! That would probably be the best reason To bake it for a test😂

I think if I make this cake, I bake it in a in a 9x13 pan, when poke holes in it, then pour the icing over that. let it soak all that goodness up. I think.

Since the only leavening in the mix was eggs, I think using a blender or mixer to whip the batter will give a better result. Thanks for sharing good and bad, it helps us learn.😊

The recipe I looked up called it a coconut custard cake, called for a sheet pan to bake it in, salt, and ONLY 5 Ounces of evaporated milk, not 12 Ounces. So that's why the batter was so thin.

I saw similar recipe on YT - How to Catch a Husband Coconut Custard Cake. To me, Custard in the name changes expectations of results. Essentially same ingredients except this one called for a 5 oz can of evap milk instead of 12 oz. It was baked in a sheet pan, looked same consistency as yours. Thx for daring to share this, but I don't think it was a fail.

Ahh it called for self rising flour not plain flour. That can make all the difference. Ive made my tried and true recipes having grabbed the wrong flour and ended up throwing the thing out because it taste so bad.

This is a Brazilian recipe and it's misleading to call it a cake. The texture is supposed to be more like a flan rather than having a crumb texture but definitely has vanilla in it.

Good for you for following the recipe, if only to prove your doubts. As you were making it, I was wondering why there wasn't much sugar, but then you added the sweetened condensed milk. Then you added the can of evaporated milk and then the cup of coconut milk. I was thinking whoa, that's a lot of liquid. I couldn't remember you adding any type of fat, or salt to the batter, but I could be wrong about the salt, and no leavening. Oh well. You are a brave woman. And Bryant was so sweet to keep eating it. He cracks me up. I Googled the recipe and the pictures I saw looked like the cake you made.

One lady said the only way you'd catch a husband with this cake is to force feed it to him & immobilize him with the concrete in it🤣. Oh my, I just hate that you wasted all those ingredients but you followed the recipe to the letter. I read that it originated in Brazil? Praise God we can laugh at these little goofs 💕. I don't know if I missed it, but where is the leveling agent ( i.e..baking powder or baking soda)? I've heard of eggs as leveling agent but they are whipped until doubled in volume and folded in. I think the instructions you received were incomplete

This certainly wasn't a wasted video. I'm glad to see when something doesn't work, so I know what not to try (I don't need to catch a husband anyhow, and mine wouldn't have been caught by this since it has so much coconut in it; my husband absolutely hates the taste of coconut).
