In this video the Lever Up heads out in search of some big tuna off the coast of Ensenada. The crew ends up trying out a new trolling method using Nomad Madmacs and it pays off big time. Nick breaks down some of the details regarding their experience and we hope it helps everyone put more fish in the boat!

Awesome. Thanks for sharing. It's actually cool to see this footage as a reality check. I've got a Whaler and been fishing here in So Cal my entire life. I'd have no problem being out there offshore . . . but . . I don't own that type of tackle, and I don't have the strength to pull on a fish of that size correctly, and my back is so tore-up that I'd end up just injuring myself. So I'll stay on the shallow end of the pool (the beach) and stay out of your way and live vicariously through you ! Good Stuff and thanks again for sharing, very cool to see.

Nice action. That's a lotta good sushi right there. Two things: 1.) With the low gunwales, invest in a quality fighting belt and harness, it'll save your crew the beating. 2.) keep the boat in gear and pick a corner--starboard or port in the stern--and maneuver the boat as needed by bumping the throttle to keep the angler in one spot. This will accomplish a few things--eliminate the up and over and around situations to the bow and over the motor, and it'll also keep your crew safer...In the cockpit, boots on the floor. Again, nice action on the Nomads. Yet to get bit on one up here in the northeast but we'll keep dragging them!

Nice job boys! We were down in Ensenada doing the same thing and had the same success. Did you notice color played a role for you? Certain days, it'll get bit on certain color.

Unfortunately all we are able to get our hands on are the whacky bright colors. Doesn’t seem to matter much, but each day there definitely seems to be a hot color that gets bit more than others.

Awesome job and thank you for the rundown with the Madmacs I just picked up a few. I was thinking of rigging them with a 3’ leader to a swivel. But your saying it’s best to tie straight to the line/leader ?
@AbandonOutdoors

It does seem like a swivel makes them less effective. We think more so that they don’t run correctly. Just what we have seen so far.

I would like to know why your fighting belt does not have a cross pin. It does help hold the rod gimbal in place.

I’m honestly not sure! We typically don’t use fighting belts but they do seem nice.
@charlesa2547
@charlesa2547 2 жыл бұрын
@@AbandonOutdoors Put a cross pin in your belt and try it. Just wear the belt low, near your crotch. Not high like a regular belt. That way you can lean against the railing to help hold the rod in the belt.

@AbandonOutdoors
@AbandonOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
Hey hector, thanks for watching! This is where it gets tough. Rods are expensive and a guy can only own and bring so many. Like most guys, we started out using the same rail rods we’ve been using for fishing these big tuna on the kite. I like the seeker OSP 4x or a calstar in a similar power. As you saw in the video, we broke the rod butt because these rods aren’t designed to be trolled with. We had Seeker replace the factory butts with Aftco trolling butts. This gives us more of a multi purpose rod for the kite and/or trolling. If you want something specifically for trolling I’d look at a seeker/calstar trolling model in a similar power. Possibly roller guides depending on what you prefer.

What's the actual speed boys? Typically we are 6-7 kt for tuna on the east coast. Two Macs how far back? 12-15 kts? Also when we troll the dtx minow we use 130 with crimps. But we are not trolling them at 15 kts. The bluefin are becoming more common on the south shore of Long Island.

Gaff over the top and belly gaff ... so wrong. You saw bad gaffs. The reason is because you brought the gaff over, instead of under, the fish. Belly gaff messes the quality of the meat. Its a beautiful, great tasting fish. Gaff it right. Best is to lay the gaff in the water and the fish circle to the gaff. I've fished over 100 tons of various tuna. One can argue but I'm talking the finer points of how to land a fish.
