Maine and New York tend to have the biggest bullheads of any place in the country. Here in Minnesota the big ones average a little over half the size of your monsters. I've fished for bullheads for many years and the biggest one I landed was in livestock pond on a ranch in South Dakota. The big ones are fun to catch, but I prefer to eat the ones that are seven to ten inches long.

Better than channels and close to a blue in taste but we call them white catfish. I believe they are in the bullhead family.

These white catfish are in the Kennebec too. I've caught a few in Gardiner, I caught one once in the brackish salt at Squirrel Point lighthouse

White Bullhead is a new one on me! I had to look it up! Anyway, I subscribed, but would you do me a favor? As an avid bass fisherman I've learned holding fish by the lower lip and raising him to the horizontal without supporting the tail can damage the tissue in their jaw joints. Please, hold the fish vertically if you can't support the fish with both hands. P.S. Nothing about this video looked staged to me. Good fishing!

These are white catfish, technically in the bullhead family but bigger, native to coastal rivers in the eastern US

When I fish rivers, I fish in between rocks and target goby for cut bait. Sometimes, I land big bullheads. I usually catch 2-3 of them on an average fishing session by accident. Biggest being around 2.5lbs

Is that the Kennebec River you're fishing? Those are White Bullhead Catfish you're catching. They're actually the largest member of the Bullhead Catfish family. They can grow up to 15 or 20 pounds. I 🤔 think there might be some Channel Catfish swimming the Kennebec as well. Not sure though?
@jameslafontaine55572 жыл бұрын
Was going to say the same, the get from river to river via tho ocean believe it or not, usually caught near the ocean or in estuaries. We don't have them in new hampshire anymore but recently started catching them, along with channels just south of new hampshire border in the merrimack. Ive been told they go up into nh on the merrimack as well but fish and game at least isn't aware if that's true. I bet they are in the brackish water on the coast here though. Are whites considered native in maine? Also curious what leads you to believe there are channels in the Kennebec, that would be pretty cool. Wonder how far up the Kennebec watershed the whites are found
@65FullMoon832 жыл бұрын
@@jameslafontaine5557 I don't believe white cats are considered native to Maine. Maine Game & Fish believes someone brought white catfish into the state & illegally released them. Read somewhere that someone claimed they caught channel catfish from the Kennebec. They probably caught white catfish and just thought they were channel catfish imo.

@jameslafontaine55572 жыл бұрын
Its not staged they are white catfish. Have caught them up to 8 pounds in the merrimack in mass just south of nh border and they travel via the ocean. One of the few cats that can live in saltwater. Hes getting them there cause hes so close to the ocean.
@jameslafontaine55572 жыл бұрын
If you guys fish your big rivers in maine a few miles up from where they enter the sea in you'll catch them just like this. Think big, betting the saco would be a good spot, but also Kennebec and Penobscot are good bets. Where the river turns brackish they get largest. I catch them with a striper set up, sliding weight above a swivel then 10 inch leader with a peice of chunk bait like cut up fish. Fallfish work the best, sucker are good too. Same size hook and bait youd use for striper surf casting or for drop fishing for cod. They get enormous so don't be surprised if you get one 5 or 6 pounds. Its crazy more people don't know about them
@yupnope24442 жыл бұрын
5:02 you can see fish worm moving on the side if this bullhead, i'de guess it wasn't staged.

bullheads do not have a fork in the tail, their tails look like the flatheads they look more like fathead channel cats tho!
