Don't reel in your large live baits to "check" them. Just grab the line and give a little tug to see if it tugs back and is still alive. If you keep reeling it in and casting it, that will sometimes cause it to dislodge or kill it by slamming it onto the waters surface. Leave it sit unless you are moving to another spot. Sometimes it takes a large fish a long time to find your bait. Occasionally tugging slightly on your line will make your live bait active and attract large predatory fish. Just make sure you don't do it hard enough to tear off your live offering.

You'd be surprised colin. I have fished the same stretch of river lots of times and caught the same fish multiple times. Sometimes they go back to the same place you initially hooked them at or at least stay within the same area so even if you dont cast to the same exact spot, you run the chance of hooking them a second or third time.

Wish back in the 80s we had youtube. My brother loved to fish. Id be with him as a little annoying sister sometimes. I had no clue what i was doing, fishing wise. But could bait my own hook and tie my own hook thanks to him teaching me. When i was like 7, i caught a lizard and put him on the hook, (he was a male and was prior fighting so he had skin all up on his back, placed hook there) No heavy weights, so he floated and ran swam along top. Until a 15 pound fl bass snagged him. Another time little older, we were at a cannal off the bay in Fl. And i was out of bait. So i put on a part of my mcdonalds burger patty on. Threw it out and caught a 30 pound sail fin catfish.

Circle hooks are counter intuitive, you have to just wait for them to take the bait and then you do not set the hook. You reel down and then maintain pressure. Let the hook do what it’s designed to do. Setting the hook on a circle hook will pull the bait out of their mouths every time. Good luck and tight lines!

AFishBicycle Yes! I was just about to comment, “don’t set those circle hooks, just reel.”

Yes! I mean the dude is out there catching fish, but those hook sets were giving me legit anxiety. Lol
@EDCandLace4 жыл бұрын
Yeah it's different for sure. C hooks are a fickle beast. If set the hook about 85% the time you missed that fish. Hubby and I are mainly bass and here in the heavy grass of Florida we are used to jacking their jaws. So when we go salt water fishing with live bait we use Chooks (for catch and release reasons and when shiner fishing for bass we don't want belly hooked fish) it takes thought to not set the hook and just raise the rod tip and reel slack.
@franklinjohnson71614 жыл бұрын
I fish almost exclusively for flatheads with live bait circle hooks and have always set the hook. Seems to work fine for me. I certainly have better than a 15% hook up rate. I've tried the reel down method with very limited success. I think the that reason has to do with the way I fish. Who knows maybe I'll try it next time out and see how it goes.

Here in Alabama we call the bowfin a grinnel. Catch them occasionally while bass fishing. Never seen so many in one place.

Here in SE Arkansas we know when you start catching grinnel/bowfin in the backwater of the Ouachita River it's time to move. Current and oxygen are gone. They put up a good fight.

Ben Livingston Also need to put a big float (20 oz coke bottle works) on the line when fishing from bank so that fish can’t go straight to the bottom, they need to be two feet up so big kitty fish can easily see them from much farther away..... (on boat you would just drop fish and limit the line). When I’m halibut fishing I keep my live bait about ten to fifteen feet above bottom...
@aboomination8974 жыл бұрын
firstly, catfish have to deal with fins all the time - they swallow their prey head-first like most predators. secondly that's cruel and retarded.
@chuckchucky87813 жыл бұрын
aboomination...first, fish swallow other fish head first so they don’t end up getting poked with spines or fins. When a fish swallows another fish head first, the fins get pushed down. Second, fish don’t have nerves in their spines. They’re basically like fingernails. And if you’re using a fish as bait and shoving a giant hook through it, are you really worried about being cruel? Your comments were daft to say the least.
