many shifts doing same thing. when coal was not being shipped to washer plant, and long wall was running good coal had to be pushed away to prevent stacker from blocking out shutting slope belt down along with all coal production. when long wall was running good and no coal was being shipped i have ate lunch while pushing.

There are feeders under the pile that dump onto a conveyor belt. That's a void from the coal running into the feeder faster than the packed coal above it can fall.

Why doesn't the surge pile just dump on top the feeder?

It is dumping on top of the feeders. The coal from the tower can only reach about 4 feeders on its own.

It depends on the size of the pile. Making a long push on this pile from the toe can take 3 to 4 minutes, plus about 2 more in reverse.
